Wow! They really wouldn't want to change. That was the same attitude that got America into this mess, now they know better; complacency when the warning signals show.
It's a pity the crisis won't elude us. Attitude is everything.
Career / Re: Engineering Vs Medicine "which Is More Challenging?" by sforte(m): 10:39pm On Feb 16, 2009
I am an Engineer and I have a cousin who's a doctor. Could still remember how hard I studied in school and how hard my work can be, especially while solving critical challenges. My cousin seemed to work very hard then, through med school and housemanship; he even lost his sense of humor somewhat because of his career.

However, in all this it's really not the challenges posed but how the individual responds to those challenges that matter. Engineering can be hard if you are soft and Medicine can be hard if you're a puppy; vice versa. And the pay? Either can pay better, it all depends on how fast you can advance your career, with the right information.

Career / The World Is In Crisis And You're Still Conventional by sforte(m): 10:20pm On Feb 16, 2009
Hi,
I really believe we don't understand that times are changing; there is a global crisis. But Nigerians have not understood the urgency around us. If you listened to Obama's inaugural speech, two things stood out:

1. America is employing new methods to tackle the problems they face;
2. America will weaken their dependence on oil.

These two commitments by Obama pokes fingers in our eyes, but we still feel it's business as usual. God help us, by the time the western world is through with recession, ours would have just started.

Let's put on the creative hat and get unconventional. HCF (Hardwork, Creativity and Faith).

Drop a thread of things you need to change in your life. I just cut two hours off my sleep.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Anyone Got A Job Through Nairaland? by sforte(m): 9:35pm On Feb 16, 2009
Testimonies abound of people getting jobs through nairaland. Infact, I've gotten two jobs before, aided by information from this forum. Information is everything; no wonder they call this age the Information Age.

However, I've come to realise that it is not just getting job that's the issue, it is also very important to keep the job and advance rapidly in your chosen career. Believe me in the long run that is what matters. I have been analyzing the biography of very successful men in Nigeria and have come to the following conclusions:

1. They had focus;
2. Their priorities were determined by sustainability;
3. They persevered.

Times are changing, soon satisfaction will truimph over immediate wealth. I really believe that at 45 years, a man should either be retired or working in his own company.
Career / Re: Varying Salaries In Different Fields by sforte(m): 11:29pm On Feb 15, 2009
Great salaries abound in any industry, what you need is to climb up the ladder fast. The pay you get now may not make much sense in the near future because your needs are constantly rising. But it is very important to have a long term approach to your career insuring your future in the process.

Career / Re: Banking Sector: Hnd Graduates Vs B.sc Graduates. by sforte(m): 9:57pm On Feb 15, 2009
Our government has been saying a lot about stopping the discrimination but from what's on ground it's still an ongoing debate.

The truth is that HND and BSc are not classed the same in the industry, and salaries differ. However, what a well baked graduate needs is opportunity. Once opportunity comes, working your way through with the right information is next. We seem to be so concerned about today, what of tomorrow?

Work youself up the ladder with the right attitude.
Career / Re: Who Will Put A Stop To Contract Hiring In Nigeria Banks? by sforte(m): 11:34pm On Feb 14, 2009
The financial crisis will affect all sectors of the economy, not just banks and it's global. The issue is that banks keep the cash that may soon dry up. However, smart MDs are thinking already and smart bankers are also thinking.

Let's remember that banks did wonders for the unemployed, absorbing as much as possible. The banking sector took a lot of graduates off the street.
