Career / Why New Graduates Are Just Like Young Puppies by shantin(f): 4:58pm On Jun 30, 2008
Author: Tobymarshall

Brains like mush, eager to please and boy they sure want to have fun!

Last year the Government commissioned research on how employable Graduates were. The answer was: not very.

But why? The reason was simple - most had no exposure to professional work settings. The ‘solution’ suggested was to build links between business and the universities – a pipe dream proposed 20 times before and never going to happen without someone spending big dollars.

Just another “deliberate use of language not to approach reality but to hide it …, Small talk in the airless front room of our lives” (Farrelly, SMH).

So your new ‘puppies’ don’t know much. At your great expense they’ll now learn how to send faxes and make copies; learn business phone etiquette and message taking; and all the stuff around meetings – how to take notes, how to participate effectively and how to follow up productively.

Plus fifty other things – having hired hundreds of ‘puppies’, it’s amazing what someone who has never worked in an office doesn’t know.

Not a problem if they stay with you as they are your future and worth the investment. But most don’t. It reminds me of when I became a boat owner, an experience which is like creating a giant plug hole to pour your money into – it’s a similar money hole with Graduates.

Career / Do I Need A Degree To Be Successful? by shantin(f): 4:53pm On Jun 30, 2008
Author: Penguins Seo

As the workplace becomes even more competitive, people are seeing the need for ever higher levels of learning. Young people with bachelor’s degrees in their chosen field are getting promoted to management above people who have worked for much longer, but have less education.

There is a trend that is growing every year in the business world: Increasingly, prospective job applicants are getting more education than ever before. In the 1940s and 1950s, it was not uncommon for people to leave school without a high school diploma, in order to help out on farms or in family businesses. Wherever there was a need, children would fill it. However, as the population, technology and information grows with the years, the percentage of people without at least a GED shrinks noticeably.

As the workplace becomes even more competitive, people are seeing the need for ever higher levels of learning. Young people with bachelor’s degrees in their chosen field are getting promoted to management above people who have worked for much longer, but have less education. The fastest way to get ahead is to increase your own level of education. Choosing the right education path for you can mean pursuing a different career, or just advancing in your current career.

Statistically, women are still making less than men in the same positions. However, men and women in the same positions who have bachelor's degrees are making nearly the same amount of money now, in business and industry, but not in science and research. This could be due to a lack of female researchers, but a recent influx of women in the business world increases the number of women in upper management.

Single mothers are increasingly going back to school to improve their resumes and portfolios, and improve their positions in their current jobs, or help themselves get out of their current positions and into better jobs that can be interesting and fulfilling careers that will help them and their children and improve their quality of life.

The point cannot be stressed enough: If a person can find the time to commit to getting at least a bachelor's degree in their chosen area of study, their ability to find good paying and fulfilling careers increases dramatically. If time is difficult to come by, then one must think of other options, or of how to organize the current schedule to accommodate school. Think of other means of getting an education, including night classes at the local community college, or online education courses.

There are plenty of options, and plenty of monetary help through grants and loans. It is worth it to get your education if you want to succeed in life. Did you know that 45% of managers have a bachelor degree or higher? Many people in their career wonder, "how can I move up in the company?" when the answer is so simple, it's almost crazy not to consider it.

Adverts / How To Please Most Of Your Customers And Keep Them Happy by shantin(f): 9:12am On Jun 27, 2008
By Acey Gaspard
You want to keep all your customers happy. The problem is that everyone thinks differently and experiences things uniquely. You can't please 100% of your customers. But you can focus on the needs of a smaller amount of customers. Please them, and you'll automatically have a lot more happy customers.

Amy has a jewelry store. She has been in business for a few years and has a lot of experience in this field. One of her business policies is to get feedback from her customers. Although this is an excellent technique for finding out what your customers want, you must use the feedback with discretion.

Amy's problem was that she took each comment too seriously; she tried to please everyone and was constantly changing her business practices and product line. This constant change not only caused her frustration, a lot of extra work, and the extra cost involved with each change, it also made her business unstable.

Customer feedback is an essential part of running a business, but the way you interpret those results is critical. Since you can't please everyone, please those that you can. Find out what your customers want, and then choose products and services along that line.

Do less, do a better job, and you'll do better in your business. You'll find that your profits grow, you're more focused on what needs to be done and you're more at ease. Don't go after quantity, but rather focus on quality. You can't please everyone, so please those that you can and you'll end up pleasing more customers. If you try to please everyone, you'll end up pleasing no one. When you combine your strengths and the desires of the majority of your customers, you'll be able to create a better, stronger business.

Let's take the above example of Amy's jewelry shop. Amy has expertise in diamonds, and 60% of her customers come to her shop to purchase diamonds. Amy also has gold rings, gold bracelets, and silver as well as other types of jewelry. Now, if Amy were to focus only on diamonds and build her business in this area instead of spreading herself thin with the other categories of jewelry, she would do much better.

She could take surveys to find out what areas of the diamond trade customers are interested in and determine what services are also needed. She can easily become one of the leading diamond retailers in her area simply by making an adjustment in her focus.

What part of your business do you need to focus on? What are your strengths? Focus on those areas, and eliminate the areas in which you're not doing so well and that are not what your customers want. You'll find that your business will prosper, and you'll move up the ranks with regard to branding, customer service, and quality.

Do your best at pleasing the people you can and forget about those you can't. You'll end up with happier customers, and more of them, along with a stronger, stable business!
Action Steps to Please Your Customers

1. Keep in mind that you can't please everyone, so please those people you can.

2. Find out what your customers want.

3. Eliminate those areas that do not focus on your customers' desires.

Adverts / Top 5 Ways To Become Irresistibly Attractive In Business by shantin(f): 8:44am On Jun 27, 2008
Ever noticed how some people just seem to attract success? There's you bashing away at your business, doing everything the manuals tell you to do and yet the person next door, doing seemingly very little, has a constant queue at the door.

How is this possible? What's the secret?

One solution can be to master the power of attraction. Becoming attractive in business may sound a little new age, but if you're big enough to embrace the concept you're likely to be pleasantly surprised.

Irresistible attraction is created when someone is being totally authentic in their work and their life.

Huh? Ok, here's a real life example: Put a toddler in a room full of people where only one is proficient and confident in dealing with children and see where the child is drawn. You guessed it!

Irresistible attraction comes from being so totally, absolutely committed to what you do and confident in your ability to do it, people (and opportunities) are drawn to you.

So, put your current thinking on hold for a few minutes and contemplate these five steps to becoming irresistibly attractive.

1. Practice being 'Triple O' - Organised, Open and Optimistic

Organised may translate into how quickly you respond to things, how effectively you follow-through on your promises. Doing what you say you're going to do, behaving as you would like others to behave.

Open is about speaking the truth; being big enough to say 'I don't know the answer, but I'll find out'. It's about discussing the things you may often shy away from - your fees, your profit margins, your weaknesses. Being open means avoiding jargon; being knowledgeable, without being arrogant.

Optimistic is the ability to see opportunity where others see problems; to clearly empathise with a client who has concerns and create a picture of how things will look once you've performed your magic. Optimists avoid gossip, they challenge beliefs, they see a bright future and look beyond business cycles and talk of gloom.

2. Be generous
Shock, horror! Generosity in business whatever next?

Being generous with your time and generous with your advice doesn't mean you're doing stuff for nothing; rather it's an avoidance of being hurried or incomplete in your support. If a business opportunity comes your way that appears not to suit you, think before being dismissive. Be generous enough to take in what's being said and try to find a solution even if it gives work to others. You'll be remembered for your generosity and generosity has a habit of getting repaid.

3. Shut up and listen

Like many of us mere men I suspect, it was something of a revelation when I grasped the concept that women like to be listened to. Often just that - listened to. We're not expected to find a solution, indeed in many cases a solution is not what is required. The same can be true in business (and not just when dealing with women).

Listening to our clients and customers is something we do all too rarely. Next time you're in a conversation and you feel yourself jumping to finish sentences or come up with solutions: STOP, SHUT UP and LISTEN!

Try reflecting back what you've heard, make sure you've listened intently and ask questions to take the conversation further. You may feel you have the answers (and indeed you may), but by listening more deeply you'll be giving your clients much more and you'll be forging a deeper relationship.

Career / The Top Six Ways To Stay Motivated by shantin(f): 8:30am On Jun 27, 2008
Here are some tips for staying motivated:

Get motivated every day.
Someone was once confronted about being a “motivational speaker.” The guy said to him, “You guys come and get people hyped up and then you leave and the motivation goes away. It doesn’t last, and then you have to get motivated again.” The speaker reminded the gentleman that baths are the same way but we think it is a good idea to take a bath every day!

It is true that motivation doesn’t last. We have to renew it each and every day. That is okay. It doesn’t make motivation a bad thing. We simply have to realize that if we want to stay motivated over the long term, it is something we will have to apply to ourselves each and every day.

Have a vision for your life.
The root word of motivation is “motive.” The definition of motive is, “A reason to act.” This is the cognitive or rational side of motivation. It is your vision. You have to have a vision that is big enough to motivate you. If you are making #50,000 a year, it isn’t going to motivate you to set your goal at #52,000 a year. You just won’t get motivated for that because the reward isn’t enough. Maybe #70,000 a year would work for you. Set out a vision and a strategy for getting there. Have a plan and work the plan.

Fuel your passion.
Much of motivation is emotional. I don’t know quite how it works but I do know THAT it works. Emotion is a powerful force in getting us going. Passion is an emotion, so fuel your passion. “Well, I like to work on logic,” you may say. Great, now work on your passion. Set yourself on a course to have a consuming desire for your goal, whatever it is. Do whatever you can to feel the emotion and use it to your advantage!

Work hard enough to get results.
You can build on your motivation by getting results. The harder you work, the more results you will get and the more results you get, the more you will be motivated to get more. These things all build on one another. If you want to lose weight, then lose the first few pounds. When the belt moves to the next notch you will get fired up to get it to the notch beyond that!

Put good materials into your mind.
I can’t say this enough – listen to tapes. I still listen to tapes regularly. I buy tape clubs from other speakers and I learn and grow. Their successes motivate me to get my own successes! Read good books. Read books that teach you new ideas and skills. Read books that tell the stories of successful people. Buy them, read them, and get motivated!
