TV/Movies / CPC, Save Us From Multichoice/gotv by smemud(m): 4:29am On Dec 10, 2018
give kudos to The PUNCH newspaper for the opportunity given to the masses through this medium to air their views and grievances on issues of national importance .
It is disheartening that organisations like Multichoice Nigeria take delight in exploiting the fact that the Consumer Protection Council which is supposed to act like a check to their excesses is not working in this country . Multichoice is always in the habit of ripping off its subscribers in Nigeria either through poor service delivery or deceptive marketing strategies .
GOtv , a product on the stables of Multichoice Nigeria , is the worst in terms of service delivery and the company does not seem to be bothered, yet they keep disturbing us with one deceptive marketing jingles or the other . I am a GOtv subscriber with IUC Number 4613148216. Each month I renew my subscription , I don ’t get to enjoy the package for up to a week and then for the rest period of the month, it is either the decoder is not connecting to its server or its server is encountering problems at its end. At the end of the day , the channels on the decoder will not be complete. For some time now , the channels displaying on my decoder are not up to 15 . To worsen the situation , its customer care numbers are not connecting and there is no medium to communicate this to them and at the end of the subscription , they will not deem it fit to compensate me for this inconvenience .

Politics / Nigeria Loses $6bn From 'corrupt' Oil Deal Linked To Fraud by smemud(m): 6:11am On Nov 26, 2018
A court in Milan is considering charges of corruption against Eni and Shell in a controversial oil deal that led to Nigeria losing an estimated $6bn.The campaign group Global Witness has calculated the OPL 245 deal in 2011 deprived Nigeria of double its annual education and healthcare budget.

Eni and Shell are accused of knowing the money they paid to Nigeria would be used for bribes.
The Italian and Anglo-Dutch energy giants deny any wrongdoing. This unfolding scandal, which is being played out in an Italian court, has involved former MI6 officers, the FBI, a former President of Nigeria, as well as current and former senior executives at the two oil companies.

The former Nigerian oil minister, Dan Etete, was found guilty by a court in France of money laundering and it emerged he used illicit funds to buy a speed boat and a chateau. It is also claimed he had so much cash in $100 bills that it weighed five tonnes.

Global Witness has spent years investigating the deal which gave Shell and Eni the rights to explore OPL 245, an offshore oil field in the Niger Delta. It has commissioned new analysis of the way the contract was altered in favour of the energy companies and concluded Nigeria's losses over the lifetime of the project would amount to $5.86bn, compared to terms in place before 2011.
The analysis was carried out by Resources for Development Consulting on behalf of Global Witness, as well as the NGOs HEDA, RE:Common and The Corner. The estimated losses were calculated using an oil price of $70 a barrel as a basis.

Eni has criticised the way it was calculated because it ignores the possibility that Nigeria had the right to revise the deal to claim a 50% share of the production revenues.
Deal or no deal

Campaigners say the deal should be cancelled.
"We discovered that Shell had constructed a deal that cut Nigeria out of their share of profit oil from the block," Ava Lee, a campaigner at Global Witness told the BBC's World Business Report.
"This amount of money would be enough to educate six million teachers in Nigeria. It really can't be underestimated just how big a deal this could be for a country that right now has the highest rates of extreme poverty in the world."
Nigeria is the richest economy in Africa, but despite having large resources of oil and gas millions of people are poor.

Lucrative OPL 245
It is understandable why Eni and Shell wanted to acquire the rights to develop OPL 245, because it is estimated to contain nine billion barrels of oil.
But the process of how they secured the contract is dogged by claims of corruption.
The court in Milan is weighing evidence of how a former Nigerian oil minister, Dan Etete, awarded ownership of OPL 245 to Malabu, a company he secretly controlled.
He is accused of paying bribes to others in the government, such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, to ensure that process went smoothly.
Shell and Eni are accused of knowing the $1.1bn they paid to Nigeria would be used for bribes, claims based on the content of emails which have since emerged.
"Looking at the emails it seems that Shell knew that the deal they were constructing was misleading but they went ahead with it anyway even though a number of Nigerian officials raised concerns about this scandalous, scandalous deal," says Ava Lee from Global Witness.
No wrongdoing

The Anglo-Dutch and Italian energy giants insist they have done nothing wrong, because they paid the money to secure the exploration rights directly to the Nigerian government.
Shell issued a statement to BBC World Business Report saying: "Since this matter is before the Tribunal of Milan it would not be appropriate for us to comment in detail. Issues that are under consideration as part of a trial process should be adjudicated in court and we do not wish to interfere with this process.
"We maintain that the settlement was a fully legal transaction and we believe the trial judges in Italy will conclude that there is no case against Shell or its former employees."

Eni has also denied any wrongdoing and told the BBC that it questions the competence of the experts commissioned by Global Witness and its "partners", as well as raising the possibility that the report by the campaign group is defamatory.
Shell accused of abuses in Nigeria
The Italian oil and gas company said "as this matter is currently before the Tribunal of Milan, we are unable to comment in detail".
In a statement it noted: "Global Witness together with its partners Corner House, HEDA Resource Centre and Re: Common had requested twice to be admitted as aggrieved parties in the Milan proceedings. On both occasions, the request was firmly denied by the Tribunal of Milan."
Eni also said it "continues to reject any allegation of impropriety or irregularity in connection with this transaction".

Biggest ever corruption case
Campaigners believe this is a landmark case and the outcome of the trial in Milan will cause an earthquake to reverberate through the oil and gas industry.
Nick Hildyard of the Corner House wonders if investors are comfortable. "Fund managers should be alarmed at this brazen dishonesty," he said.
Nigeria's leader is being encouraged to intervene by Olanrewaju Suraju, from HEDA. "President Buhari should reject any deal," he said.

The contrast between the way Italy deals with migrants and the actions of one of the nation's biggest companies has been raised by Antonio Tricarico of Re;Common.
"The Italian government is discouraging Nigerian migrants trying to reach Italy by claiming that it will help them at home, but Italy's biggest multi-national, part owned by the state, is accused of scamming billions from the Nigerian people."

The outcome of the unprecedented court case in Milan could force the oil industry to change how it conducts its business, especially in countries where corruption is rife, because more transparency about contracts and payments made would discourage fraud.

Crime / Nigeria’s Trafficking Curse: D Battle 2 Dispel D Black Magic Behind Sex Slavery by smemud(m): 6:03pm On Sep 25, 2018
When Florence broke out in lesions on her face, she was convinced it was because she had crossed a black magic curse cast on her as she left Nigeria to work in Russia’s sex trade.
Florence is one of a rising number of women lured in the past few years from impoverished lives in southern Nigeria to Europe with the promise of lucrative work, many ending up selling sex.
Although some of the women knowingly entered into contracts for sex work, few realized they would be trapped like slaves for years, with their traffickers colluding with madams to ensure black magic curses, or juju, stopped them escaping.
For belief in juju to kill or maim is deeply rooted in Edo State, the home of about nine in every 10 Nigerian women trafficked to Europe, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, with a battle now waging to end witchcraft’s hold over trafficking victims.
Florence, 24, said she had not known she was headed for sex work six years ago, when she agreed to a loan to fund a trip to work in Russia in a deal brokered by a pastor from her church.
Before leaving her home in Benin, the capital of Edo, she was taken to a juju priest who used her hair and clothing to make a spell to bind her to her traffickers. She was then taken to Lagos, where she was raped before being sent to Russia.
“They took my pants. They took my bra. They took my pubic hair from my armpits and also from my private parts,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The madam “used those items she took from me to take as vengeance against me.”
She was convinced that juju was to blame for facial lesions that erupted in 2016 after she refused to give her captors any more money after paying them 45,000 euros (US$52,591) and fled back to Nigeria.
SPELLS AND CURSES
Florence’s fear of black magic if she disobeyed her traffickers, went to the police or failed to pay her debt is typical for many women trafficked from Nigeria, experts have said.
Many end up enslaved after signing a contract to finance their move, leaving them with debts that spiral into thousands of US dollars and take years to pay off.
From 2014 to 2016, there was an almost 10-fold increase in the number of Nigerian women arriving in Italy by boat — about 11,000 — with at least four in five becoming prostitutes, according to the International Organization for Migration.
However, law enforcement officials and campaigners are hoping the intervention this year by Oba Ewuare II, leader of the historic kingdom of Benin, could end the burgeoning trade.
In March, the oba summoned the kingdom’s juju priests to a ceremony at his palace and dismissed the curses they had placed on trafficking victims — and cast a fresh curse on anyone who went against his order.
Since then, anecdotal evidence from people involved in the trade suggests that the trafficking has slowed, although it is too soon for firm data to be collated.
Patience, 42, who has supplemented her income as a hairdresser by selling girls into overseas sex work for about 16 years, said the leader’s ceremony had stopped the trafficking.
“I didn’t hear directly from his mouth, but through the radio and television. The oba has stopped everything,” Patience told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in her home in Benin, where she lives with her husband and four children. “Whenever I go out, I meet girls who beg me to take them to Europe, but I refuse, because I don’t want to die. Everybody is afraid.”http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/editorials/archives/2018/09/26/2003701164
Health / What Do Snakes And Sticks Have To Do With Doctors? by smemud(m): 1:48pm On May 19, 2018
If you’ve ever seen the World Health Organization or American Medical Association logo, or the “star of life” on the side of an ambulance, you might have wondered what a snake wrapped around a stick has to do with those who fix what ails us. Well, that stick is the asklepian, or rod of Asclepius. In ancient Greek mythology, Asclepius was the son of Apollo, and the god of medicine and healing. Depending on which historian you ask, he may have even been based on an actual historical doctor whose skills became so exaggerated that patients formed a cult around him.

The snake that's wrapped around the rod may symbolize rejuvenation, because snakes shed their skin, or it could simply represent the healing of snakebites. It might also have something to do with antivenom or the medicinal properties of snake venoms.
The rod itself has more to do with medicine than the fact that a doctor-god carried it, though the explanations for the connection vary. It could be a reference to a traditional treatment of a parasitic nematode called
Dracunculus medinensis or Guinea worm. The worm causes blisters on whatever limb it takes up residence in, which can be can be quite painful judging from the ancient Latin name for the infection: "affliction with little dragons." To remove the parasite, doctors would cut a slit in the skin right in its path and, when it poked its head from the wound, take a small stick and slowly wrap the worm around it until the “little dragon” was fully removed.

The infection is relatively rare today, but the same extraction method is still used. The parasite and the treatment may have been so widespread and well-known in ancient times that the symbolic rod started out with worms on it, and they morphed into snakes centuries later.
Whatever the snake and stick mean, the rod should not be confused with another snake & stick combo: the caduceus, featuring two snakes, a stick and wings, that’s often used as a symbol of medicine in the U.S.
The staff is said to have been that of Hermes, the messenger of the Greek gods. Hermes did not have a connection to medicine, and the medical use of the caduceus has a very modern origin. The U.S. Army Medical Corps adopted it as their symbol in 1902 at the insistence of a single officer who probably assumed a medical link after seeing it used as a printer’s mark on 19th century medical texts. The mark was used by several publishers in their books because they thought of themselves, like Hermes, as messengers and diffusers of knowledge.
Art historian Walter J. Friedlander, in his book The Golden Wand of Medicine: A History of the Caduceus Symbol in Medicine , collected hundreds of examples of both asklepian and caduceus logos and insignias in America and found that professional associations were more likely to use the staff of Asclepius and commercial organizations were more likely to use the caduceus. He noted that caduceus is more appropriate for commercial ventures, since it has more visual impact.http://mentalfloss.com/article/30751/what-do-snakes-and-sticks-have-do-doctors

Foreign Affairs / Millionaire Pretends To Be Poor & Visits A Restaurant... And This Happened by smemud(m): 6:51pm On Mar 18, 2018
Millionaire Pretends To Be Poor & Visits A Restaurant... and this happened

A Billinaire businessman who dressed to look poor and visited a restaurant has ended up receiving a rather shocking treatment.
A YouTube star brought new meaning to the saying 'don't judge a book by its cover' with a shocking social media experiment that saw him dressing like a homeless person in order to see if staff at a restaurant would treat him any differently.
In an attempt to prove that appearances can always be deceiving, New York-based Coby Persin tested staff at a Florida eatery to see how they would react to someone based purely on what they looked like, before stunning them with the revelation that they were in fact dealing with a millionaire.
In a three-minute video, the 23-year-old can be seen approaching a restaurant while dressed in an assortment of scruffy clothing and carrying a large garbage bag, before asking to be seated by a staff member who is standing at the entrance.
Wasting no time, Coby approaches the man, who appears to be acting as a host, to ask for a table for himself and his friend Ronaldo.
Ensuring that he remains polite and courteous throughout their conversation, he also asks whether it would be possible to see a menu.
'Hi how are you? I would like to get a table for me and my friend Ronaldo - to see the menu maybe,' he says.
But the host, whose faced has been blurred out to maintain his privacy, says that he is unable to seat Coby because he believes the restaurant is 'too expensive' for him to afford.
'I'm sorry. We're not going to be able to do it sir,' he says, while blocking Coby's access to the eatery. 'This place is a little too expensive for you.'
Clearly put off by the interaction, Coby decides to give the restaurant host a chance to redeem himself and asks again if there is a menu he can see.
'Nope,' the host replies bluntly. 'We can't serve you, we're not going to serve you today. I'm sorry about that.'
And even when Coby tries to tell him he has a lot of money, the host still refuses to serve him and says: 'Can you please get away? Go eat at McDonald's - some other options but not here.'
Coby then backs away from the restaurant and is heard uttering a 'wow' as he dials his driver Ronaldo.
But as he starts dialing, the host asks if he can make the call off the restaurant's property.
'Can you please get away,' the host asks again. 'Stand over there.'
But the host is in for quite the surprise because Ronaldo drives up to the restaurant in a Rolls Royce with a suitcase of cash in the trunk.
Ronaldo then hands the suitcase to Coby who shows it to the host.
Coby says: 'I told you I had money. What's crazy is the way you judged people just by there appearance. I might buy this spot just I can fire you - you're lucky.'
Ronaldo and Coby then go to the 'steak spot down the street' leaving the host speechless and ashamed.
This isn't the first social experiment video, Coby has done. One of his most recent ones involved the vlogger planting trees in New York City pot holes.
He came up with the green-thumbed idea after he himself hit a pot hole and ruined the tire of his car.
He said: 'When I was driving around New York City, I hit a pot hole and my tire popped and I had to buy a new one.'
'So I was thinking to myself, how as New Yorkers can we avoid these pot holes? Had I seen a plant inside the pot hole, I would have drove around the plant and not hit the pot hole.'
He added: 'So I'm going around with different sized plants and putting them in different sized pot holes so New Yorkers avoid them.'

Foreign Affairs / Time-traveling Guy 'noah' From Year 2030 Wears Gophers Shirt by smemud(m): 8:44pm On Feb 16, 2018
The bad news is, Donald Trump's going to get reelected. Youtube
The good news: Despite much evidence to the contrary, human life will still exist in some form in the year 2030, though a few of us will be living on Mars.
Even greater news: Phones will be a little bit faster, and swiping will be easier.
These are just a few of the mind-blowing revelations from a popular Youtube video featuring a young man who goes by "Noah," who says he is visiting the present from the not-so-distant future. He made this journey to... mostly to appear in Youtube videos, so far. He'll only agree to do so with his face obscured and voice modulated.
In fact, there's just one identifying feature to this future guy: his University of Minnesota Gophers shirt. Noah's worn the same U of M gear in two separate interviews with paranormally inclined Youtubers.
Where'd he get the shirt? Did someone from 2018 give it to him so he'd blend in with the normies living now? Was he rockin' this Gophers shirt in 2030, and brought it back with him? (Is "brought" the right verb for something 12 years from now?) Does everyone in the near future wear University of Minnesota gear? Is this the uniform?
Noah doesn't say, and his interlocutor doesn't answer, thus leaving this time traveler's ties to the U a mystery... like much else, frankly. Consider Noah's description of how it is he got back here. "There's different ways" to move through time, he informs his interviewer.
His method is evidently difficult to explain:
Noah : "I use a bunch of electricity around me, and -- or, if I'm in a place where I'm supposed to time travel, usually I'm in this giant [garbled ] underground, where, like electricity generates, and then the technology [garbled ] my body to fire up, and then I just, time travel."
Interviewer : "Interesting."
Isn't it? Feels like that last part -- "then I just, time travel" -- is a key step in the process.
Noah's exclusive interview with "ApexTV" is framed originally as a lie detector test, though they seem to abandon that premise after a few questions. (You'll be relieved to learn Noah's claim he could potentially be in danger is rated "false."wink Anyway, without the aid of the lie detector -- and no additional "technology" around to [garbled ] -- we'll have to assume every single thing Noah says here is 100 percent true.
Be proud, Minnesota students and alumni. A man from the future's wearing one of your shirts.
Be ashamed, everyone. This video's five days old, and has been viewed more than 400,000 times.

Politics / The Story Of The CAC Good Women Choir And The Evergreen Song by smemud(m): 9:40am On Dec 14, 2017
I'm pretty sure you must have heard the song. This is the period when the song comes alive.

"Odun lo sopin o (This year is coming to an end)

Baba rere (Good God)

Baba Ma somi o (Oh Lord guide us)

Tomotomo (And our children)

Ohun ti o pa mi lekun o (Sorrow and sadness)

Lodun titun (In the new year)

Ma je ko sele simi o Baba rere (Will not be our portion good God)"

You will hear this song in any music shop in the South-Western region in Nigeria this moment. The year is synonymous with the end of the year.

The song is titled 'Odun Nlo Sopin' and it was sung by the CAC Good Women Choir. This is the breathtaking part. The song was released in 1979,  38 years ago. 'Odun Nlo Sopin' is in every right a classic and an evergreen tune many Yoruba Christians use to spiritually prepare themselves for the New Year.

Odun Nlo Sopin  (Spotify )

The CAC Good Women Choir was formed in 1975 at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), in Ibadan. With 200 female members, the choir was formed. The choir released its first album 'Hallelujah' in 1977 underIbukun Orisun Iye Records.

The CAC logo  (CAC Worldwide Online)

By 1979 the music group struck gold with the release of 'Odun Nlo Sopin' as the song has survived music trends and decades to still remain relevant.

Led by Mrs Deborah Fasoyin, the group shrunk to 35 members after the creation of states and it now has 12 members presently because of death and other reasons.

Deborah Fasoyin  (Punch Newspapers )

In 2012, the group released the classic song on iTunes. This move led to the revival of the song online.

In January 2017, Mrs Fasoyin revealed who sang the song. "It is actually a CAC composition which dates back to the early 1940s. It was a hymn that was sung at the end of each year by all CAC churches but we added only two verses to the original composition so one can’t really say who wrote it but many have said that we made it famous and we thank God for that" she toldPunch.

With 25 albums under its belt, the CAC Good Women Choir still performs today and for free. The group believes in spreading the gospel at no cost.

There are only a few Nigerian songs that have stood the test of time like Odun Nlo Sopin.

Foreign Affairs / Russian Fancy Bear Hackers' UK Link Revealed, hijack Nigeria Gov Website by smemud(m): 7:30pm On Nov 23, 2017
When Russia's most notorious hackers hired servers from a UK-registered company, they left a trove of clues behind, the BBC has discovered.
The hackers used the computers to attack the German parliament, hijack traffic meant for a Nigerian government website and target Apple devices.
The company, Crookservers, had claimed to be based in Oldham for a time.
It says it acted swiftly to eject the hacking team - dubbed Fancy Bear - as soon as it learned of the problem.
Technical and financial records from Crookservers seen by the BBC suggest Fancy Bear had access to significant funds and made use of online financial services, some of which were later closed in anti-money laundering operations.
Fancy Bear - also known as APT28, Sofacy, Iron Twilight and Pawn Storm - has been linked to Russian intelligence.
The group played a key role in 2016's attack on the US's Democratic National Committee (DNC), according to security experts.
Indeed an internet protocol (IP) address that once belonged to a dedicated server hired via Crookservers was discovered in malicious code used in the breach
The spies who came in for milk
Early in 2012, Crookservers claimed to be based at the same address as a newsagent's on an unassuming terraced road in Oldham, according to historical website registration records.
But after a short period, the listing switched to Pakistan. The BBC has seen no evidence the shop or its employees knew how the address was being used or that Crookservers had any real connection to the newsagent's.
Crookservers was what is known as a server reseller. It was an entirely online business. The computers it effectively sublet were owned by another company based in France and Canada.
The BBC identified Crookservers's operator as Usman Ashraf.
Social media and other online accounts suggest he was present in the Oldham area between 2010 and mid-2014. He now seems to be based in Pakistan.
Mr Ashraf declined to record an interview, but provided detailed answers to questions via email.
Despite his company's name, he denied knowing he had had hackers as customers.
"We never know how a client is using the server," he wrote.
When in 2015 he had been alerted to the hackers, he said, he had acted swiftly to close their accounts.
He said he had also carried out a "verification" process, culling 60-70% of the company's accounts he had suspected of being misused.
"There is 0% compromise on abusive usage," he said.
Joining the dots
Over three years, Fancy Bear rented computers through Crookservers, covering its tracks using bogus identities, virtual private networks and hard-to-trace payment systems.
Researchers at cyber-threat intelligence company Secureworks, who analysed information from Crookservers for the BBC, said it had helped them connect several Fancy Bear operations.
Senior security researcher Mike McLellan said the hackers had exhibited poor "tradecraft".
One communication shows one hacker, using the pseudonym Roman Brecesku, had complained that his server had been "cracked".
Crookservers was previously linked to an attack on the German parliament .
The server used to control the malware was hired through Crookservers by a hacker using the pseudonym Nikolay Mladenov who paid using Bitcoin and Perfect Money, according to records seen by the BBC.
The hacker used the server until June 2015, when it was deleted at Crookservers's request following media reports of the attack.
This server's IP address also appears in malware used to target some attendees at the Farnborough air show in 2014 .
Fancy Bear malware used to attack a UK TV station and the DNC also contained this IP address, although the server was no longer in Fancy Bear's control when these attacks occurred.
A financial account used by Mladenov was also used by another hacker, operating under the pseudonym Klaus Werner, to hire more computers through Crookservers.
One server hired by Werner received "redirected" traffic from a legitimate Nigerian government website, according to Secureworks analysis.
Apple attack
The financial account used by Mladenov and Werner was used by Fancy Bear hackers - including two using the names Bruno Labrousse and Roman Brecesku - to hire other servers from Crookservers.
One server and the email address used to hire it seem to have links to "advanced espionage" malware used to target iOS devices.
The malware was capable of turning on voice recording and stealing text messages .
Another email used to hire servers can be linked to an attack against Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security.
But there are eight dedicated servers tied to the same financial information, whose use is unknown - suggesting there may be other Fancy Bear attacks that have not been publicly disclosed.
Follow the money
Fancy Bear spent at least $6,000 (£4,534) with Crookservers via a variety of services that offered an extra level of anonymity.
They included Bitcoin, Liberty Reserve and Perfect Money. Liberty Reserve was later closed after an international money laundering investigation.
The BBC asked a UK company called Elliptic, which specialises in identifying Bitcoin-related "illicit activity", to analyse Fancy Bear's Bitcoin payments.
Lead investigator Tom Robinson said his team had identified the wallet that had been the source of these funds. He said the bitcoins it contained were "worth around $100,000".
Elliptic traced the source of some of the funds in that wallet to the digital currency exchange BTC-e.
In July, BTC-e was closed by the US authorities and its Russian alleged founder arrested in Greece accused of money laundering.
Although BTC-e is alleged to have been popular with Russian cyber-criminals, the BBC has no evidence its management was aware its clients included Fancy Bear.
Continuing operation
The financial and technical records link together several attacks previously tied to Fancy Bear.
And it is possible that following the financial trail further may yield additional revelations.
Crookservers closed on 10 October. Fancy Bear's operations, however, have not.http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-42056555

If you're a fan of optical illusions and pictures that make you do a double take, then you're in for a treat. Make sure that you don't have any important work to do later in the day, because these photos are going to require all of your mental energy. If you're like me, you might need a nap after this one.

Foreign Affairs / Deposed African Leaders And Where They Are Now by smemud(m): 6:31am On Nov 16, 2017
DAKAR, Senegal – As shock continues over the fate of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, who vowed to rule until death but now finds himself in military custody, here's a look at other larger-than-life African leaders who spent years in power, then lost it.

___

GAMBIA'S YAHYA JAMMEH

Jammeh took power in 1994 in a bloodless coup, ruling the tiny West African nation for more than 22 years. His regime was accused of overseeing human rights abuses to silence opponents. In a stunning turn of events, Gambians last year elected opposition coalition candidate Adama Barrow, who was forced to wait in neighboring Senegal during a weeks-long political standoff until Jammeh finally flew into exile in Equatorial Guinea with his family and close aides. Jammeh has not been heard from since.

___

CONGO'S MOBUTU SESE SEKO

Mobutu seized power in a military coup in 1965, five years after the vast, mineral-rich nation gained independence from Belgium. His leadership had the support of the United States and other Western governments. After a legendary, corrupt dictatorship that lasted more than 30 years and left the country then called Zaire in shambles, he was overthrown in 1997 by Laurent Kabila. Mobutu took refuge in Morocco in 1997, where he died of prostate cancer.

___

UGANDA'S IDI AMIN DADA

Idi Amin's eight-year rule was defined by the deaths of up to 300,000 people. He was famously mercurial, targeting certain ethnic groups but also journalists, lawyers and others he saw as possible opposition. Yet for more than 25 years he was never punished for bringing misery to the once-prosperous country and never expressed remorse. He sought exile in Saudi Arabia after his government was ousted in 1979. He died there in 2003 after being on life support and suffering from kidney failure.

___

LIBYA'S MOAMMAR GADHAFI

At age 27, Gadhafi emerged in 1969 as leading a group of officers who overthrew the monarchy of King Idris. Gadhafi became a symbol of anti-Western defiance in a Third World recently liberated from European colonial rulers. He ruled with brutality during his nearly 42 years in power, leaving behind an oil-rich nation drained of its institutions. Rebels overwhelmed the capital in 2011 and drove him into hiding in Sirte, where he was pulled from a drainage tunnel and killed. He became the first ruler killed in the Arab Spring uprisings that swept the region.

___

LIBERIA'S CHARLES TAYLOR

Former warlord Taylor was president between 1997 and 2003 and was accused of greed and savagery. The second of the country's back-to-back civil wars, which together killed more than 250,000 people, occurred under his rule. He fled to Nigeria in 2003 as part of a deal to end the war, which he had financed by trafficking in diamonds from neighboring Sierra Leone. He was extradited to face charges of crimes against humanity at a U.N.-supported Special Court for his role in fomenting conflict in Sierra Leone. In 2012 he became the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II. He is serving a 50-year sentence in Britain.

___

BURKINA FASO'S BLAISE COMPAORE

Compaore came to power after a bloody 1987 coup that killed the West African nation's revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara. After ruling for more than 27 years, Compaore tried to amend the constitution to seek another term in office. Faced with a popular uprising, he was forced to step down in 2014. He fled into exile and is now living as a citizen of Ivory Coast. Human rights groups want him extradited to face justice for several murders he is accused of during his reign, including that of Sankara.

___

CHAD'S HISSENE HABRE

Habre's rule from 1982 to 1990 was marked by human rights abuses that eventually saw him forced from power by current President Idriss Deby. For more than 20 years, Habre lived a life of luxurious exile in Senegal until paramilitary police took him into custody. The Extraordinary African Chambers was created by the African Union and Senegal to try him for crimes committed during his presidency. In May, he was found guilty of crimes against humanity, war crimes, torture and sex crimes and was sentenced to life in prison. It was the first conviction of a former head of state by an African court for crimes against humanity.

___

ETHIOPIA'S MENGISTU HAILE MARIAM

Mengistu Haile Mariam ruled Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991 and is blamed for the killing of hundreds of students, intellectuals and politicians during the "Red Terror" against supposed enemies of his Soviet-backed military dictatorship. He fled a rebellion in 1991 and was taken in by Mugabe in Zimbabwe. His army had helped to train Mugabe's guerrillas in their struggle for independence from white rule. Mengistu was convicted in absentia by an Ethiopian court in 2006 of genocide and later sentenced to death, but Zimbabwe has refused to extradite him.

THERE IS A WITCH IN EVERY WOMAN!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>∆∆∆<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

This is a very interesting story and a lesson for men.

(To men) Please take time to ponder.

(To women) Just enjoy the story.

Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighbouring kingdom.

The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur's youth and ideals. So, the monarch offered him his freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer and, if after a year, he still had no answer, he would be put to death.

The question was:
*What do women really want?*

Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man. And to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monarch's proposition to have an answer by year's end.

He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everyone: the princess, the priests, the wise men, and even the court jester. He spoke with everyone, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer.

Many people advised him to consult the old witch, for only she would have the answer. But the price would be high as the witch was famous throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she charged.

The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no choice but to talk to the witch. She agreed to answer the question, but first he would have to agree to her price.

The old witch wanted to marry Sir Lancelot, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table, and Arthur's closest friend. Young Arthur was horrified.

She was hunch-backed and hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made obscene noises, etc.

He had never encountered such a repugnant creature in all his life. He refused to force his friend to marry her and endure such a terrible burden.

But Lancelot, having learnt of the proposal, spoke with Arthur. He said nothing was too big of a sacrifice compared to Arthur's life. And the reservation of the Round Table. Hence, a wedding was proclaimed and the witch answered.

Arthur's question thus:
"What a woman really wants?"

She said, "A woman wants to be in charge of her own life."

Everyone in the kingdom instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth, and that Arthur's life would be spared. And so it was. The neighbouring monarch granted Arthur his freedom. And Lancelot and the witch had a wonderful wedding.

The honeymoon hour approached and, Lancelot, steeling himself for a horrific experience, entered the bedroom. But, what a sight awaited him.

The most beautiful woman he had ever seen was sitting by the bed.

The astounded Lancelot asked what had happened. The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she appeared as a witch, she would henceforth become her horrible and deformed self only half the time, and be the beautiful maiden the other half.

"Which would you prefer?" She asked him. "BEAUTIFUL during the DAY... OR at NIGHT?"

Lancelot pondered the predicament.

During the day, he could have a beautiful woman to show off to his friends, but at night, in the privacy of his castle, an old witch!

OR,

would he prefer having a hideous witch during the day? But by night a beautiful woman for him to enjoy wondrous moments with?

(If you are a man reading this) What would YOUR choice be?

(If you are a woman reading this) What would YOUR MAN'S choice be?

And Lancelot's choice is given below...

BUT, please make YOUR choice first before you scroll down below!

OKAY?

Knowing the answer the witch gave to Arthur for his question, Sir Lancelot said that he would allow HER to make the choice herself.

Upon hearing this, she announced that she would be beautiful all the time, because he had respected her enough to let her be in charge of her own life.

Now, what is the moral to this

The moral is...

1. There is a 'witch' in every woman, no matter how beautiful she is. It's how a man manages it

2. If you let a woman decide on her own she gives u d best. but if u force her with ur decisions she becomes a witch.

Hmmmm
What do you think ?

So, be careful how you treat a woman.
