Health / HABITS THAT CAUSE HALITOSIS (BAD BREATH/MOUTH ODOUR). by Smilesdotcom: 12:16pm On Jan 29
It's embarrassing to have bad breath, and sometimes you just can't get the smell to go away no matter how hard you try. A number of factors, some of which may be beyond your control, including heredity, acid reflux, diabetes, sinus disorders, and certain drugs, can result in halitosis or bad breath. Although periodontal therapies can help restore normal dental health and cure halitosis, gum disease is a common cause of bad breath. But there are a lot of other reasons why your breath could smell, and you can prevent or combat bad breath by adopting some of these important practices.

One or more of the following regular practices may be the cause of your persistent halitosis:

1. You Don't Brush and Floss Daily—The best defense against foul breath and preservation of oral health is consistent brushing and flossing. This is the first habit you should break if you have trouble with halitosis. Don't forget to scrape out any bacteria that may have accumulated on your tongue.

2. You Breathe via Your Mouth: When you breathe primarily through your mouth, saliva evaporates, causing dry mouth. This keeps food particles from washing down your throat and causing bad breath.

3. You Consume Mouth Bacteria-Altering Foods: You probably already know that some foods, including coffee, onions, and garlic, might make you halitosis-prone, but you should also stay away from foods like cabbage and Brussels sprouts that have a strong smell or rinse out when you take them.

4. You're on a Low-Carb Diet: Yeshiva University researchers discovered that people with foul breath were more likely to be following a low-carb diet as opposed to a low-fat diet.

5. You Drink a Lot of Alcohol: Alcohol causes your mouth's saliva to dry out, which is similar to mouth breathing. When alcohol is broken down by your body, it causes terrible breath.

6. You Don't Drink Enough Water: Throughout the day, your mouth continuously uses saliva to flush out food particles. Dehydration can lead to dry mouth, which produces a peculiar stench.

Now you know all these, which do you think is peculiar to you or someone you know. 👇Leave a comment below

Health / Say NO To Yellow Teeth, Folks by Smilesdotcom: 10:59am On Feb 03, 2022
Yellow teeth are the enemy of a nice smile. Here are some tips to make you smile bright and keep it!

This post aims to give simple and accessible advice for those who do not know the subject thoroughly. If you’ve mastered it and/or want to add more details, don’t hesitate to react in the comments.

This is Why You have yellow teeth
If we generally speak of “yellow teeth”, know that there are in fact two types of staining and that they are not treated at all in the same way.

Intrinsic Strains, located inside the tooth, are often pathological or of drug origin. Your mom, when she was pregnant, or you when you were little, may have taken a treatment that stained your teeth in the mass while they were in full formation. But let me assure you right away lol: this scenario is rather rare and the yellowing of your teeth is surely due to surface staining, also called “extrinsic staining”
Extrinsic stains are most of the time due to dyes located on the surface of the enamel. In regular contact with certain chemicals (nicotine, tar etc) or foods (coffee, soda, etc), the surface of the teeth is stained by a deposit that will eventually penetrate the enamel and give it that famous unattractive yellowish tint. Good news for coffee lovers: this type of superficial discoloration is quite easy to treat, whether you prefer to do your grub on your own couch or on the dentist’s chair!
Genetics : genes determine the initial colour of the teeth as well as how it changes over the years. Teeth naturally tend to yellow over time and some people will naturally have whiter teeth than others, and for even longer. That’s just how it is, don’t blame yourself.

How do I get rid of yellow teeth?
In addition to brushing your teeth twice a day, minimum for three minutes (a minute and a half at the top and again at the bottom), you can try to find a whiter smile in several more or less complicated and expensive ways.

Whitening toothpastes: Like a mirror, enamel reflects light. Over time and stains, its reflective power decreases. The whitening toothpaste will polish the surface of the tooth to make it smoother and therefore shinier. It therefore does not modify the colour of the teeth, it merely exfoliates them. Be careful though: like baking soda, whitening toothpastes can be aggressive for the enamel. It is therefore better to alternate with a classic toothpaste.
Home Whitening Kits: Whether in stick, strip or gel form, home whitening kits are often formulated with hydrogen peroxide. Even if their concentration is lower than that of the products used in the dental practices, these kits should not be used lightly because they can cause irritation of the gums, hypersensitivity of the teeth and even an altercation of the enamel. I strongly advise you to talk to your dentist before you start (you can talk to us). Also, be aware of the damage done by hydrogen peroxide. Some oral care brands have specialized in the formulation of non-aggressive whitening treatments based on softer ingredients for the mouth.
Home Bleaching: Home bleaching is a risk-free home bleaching technique supervised by a dentist. During a first appointment, they take impressions of your upper and lower jaw to make two plastic trays in which a whitening gel will be placed. Depending on the results, the use of the gutters may be extended for a few additional weeks. It is just as effective as and less expensive than in-office whitening.
Teeth whitening in the dental office: For an immediate whitening result, nothing is more effective than whitening at the dentist. It consists of the classification of the enamel thanks to a solution based on hydrogen peroxide which can be activated by a UV lamp. If it is very effective and perfectly controlled by a dentist. If you’re around Lekki, stop by for consultation with us, let’s get you started on your journey to a whiter teeth.
Veneers are another great option for transforming your smile and making it several shades whiter. During veneer preparation, a dentist reshapes the exterior surface of the teeth. He or she then makes a mold of the mouth and custom designs ceramic shells that are bonded onto the surface of the teeth. The concept of veneers is like renovating a house. It’s the same house, but with some modifications and new finishes, the house can look completely different.

What lipstick to use for yellow teeth?

Some lipstick colours, even if they are very pretty, can make your teeth look more yellow than they really are. Conversely, others can make your teeth gain luminosity! It is therefore interesting to know what type of shade to choose to cheat a little and give more power to your smile *wink*
If you’re a fan of Hollywood red lips, choose a bluish shade rather than orange. A red that tends towards blue will neutralize the yellowish veil of your teeth. If you only like your lips a Malabar color, choose a cold pink or an orange-pink, for the same reason that is better to wear a cold red than a hot red.
In any case, stay away from shades that are too orange or too flashy which, if they look good, also tend to yellow the teeth.

Health / See How To Straighten Your Teeth Without Braces by Smilesdotcom: 2:17pm On Jan 27, 2022
There are numerous options available for straightening teeth without braces. Modern digital advances have revolutionized the orthodontic industry to allow for possibilities that had not existed a couple of decades ago. But with some new alternatives to traditional braces, you may wonder which is best for you, and better yet, what are the pros and cons of each?

In this article, we’ll talk about the options you have available in your quest for straighter teeth without braces.

Veneers

Veneers are a way of straightening the teeth without committing to braces or even clear aligners. The concept of veneers is like renovating a house. It’s the same house, but with some modifications and new finishes, the house can look completely different.

During veneer preparation, a dentist reshapes the exterior surface of the teeth. He or she then makes a mold of the mouth and custom designs ceramic shells that are bonded onto the surface of the teeth. Veneers can change the alignment of the teeth, but they can also change the size, shape, and colour.

Veneers are the right choice for patients who would like a dramatic result and may benefit from other changes in addition to the alignment, such as whitening or fixing worn/broken teeth. They are also a good choice for people who don’t want to commit to months or years of straightening their teeth with orthodontics. Veneers can improve the alignment of the teeth in as little as a few weeks.

The one disadvantage of veneers is that a thing layer of enamel needs to be removed. Therefore, if you have healthy teeth which are satisfactory shape and colour, it’s usually recommended to try clear aligners first.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are a system for straightening teeth. A dentist takes molds of the teeth. Software is used to idealize a result, and it determines all the movements required to get from start to finish.

The software creates a series of aligners that have incremental changes in shape and slowly migrate the teeth toward the desired final result.

From the patient perspective, the patient has to change each aligner to the next in the series every 10-14 days. Here’s the trick to have things go well.

In-office treatment with clear aligners typically boils down to two keys for success:

1. Wearing the aligners the recommended amount of time, which is typically 20-22 hours per day and,
2. Maintaining good oral hygiene during the treatment.

It sounds simple, and it is, but there are some more details that you should know. Its not just about the software. For teeth to move properly, the dentist also needs to make some adjustments in the office.

Often the dentist will have to place tooth-coloured buttons on the teeth. The buttons are called “attachments” and help clear aligners gain leverage to move the teeth.

The dentist may also need to make space in the mouth by adjusting the shape of some teeth. You can imagine that if teeth are crowded, it’s because they lack space. Hence, crowds are stuck in a tight space. The same happens with teeth.

So to align them, they need to have a room. The dentist determines how much space is needed and can reshape the teeth to allow the teeth to move properly in the jaw.

Some of you may be hesitant to have your teeth adjusted for Invisalign. But I want to reiterate the importance of space when aligning teeth. Space is critical. If there’s not enough space when the teeth are aligned, it ultimately can change the overbite or overjet. This crowds the jaw space when opening and closing, increasing the risk of TMJ disorder.

Benefits of clear aligners

The benefit of clear aligner treatment over traditional braces is that clear aligners are more discreet. The aligners are clear and any attachments placed on the teeth are tooth-coloured. The timeframe for clear aligners as compared to traditional braces is generally the same in most cases.

Clear aligners (at-home treatment)

It’s no secret that people want to straighten teeth without braces. Because of that several companies offer treatment at home under a licensed dentist’s guidance in a telehealth model.

The big takeaway here is that all the standards of care of clear aligner in-office treatment, should also apply to at-home treatment.

The software and aligners used by at-home clear aligner telehealth providers is quite similar. However, where the challenges lie with these treatments is in regards to the adjunctive treatment that can only be completed in a dental office. For example, we talked a lot about adjusting the teeth to make space. That’s obviously only something that can be completed by a dentist or orthodontist. So make sure the DIY clear aligner company has partnered with offices that are able to do these procedures.

The point is it’s not just about the teeth. The jaws have to match too.

So here’s my advice if you are considering DIY orthodontics. Be sure, you feel comfortable with the treatment plan and ask the telehealth provider sufficient questions to feel confident.
