Car Talk / Re: FCT To Ban Okada Come October 1st by Special11(m): 5:34pm On Oct 11, 2006 |
Isn't it amazing that we never seem to be able to find a solution to any problem in Nigeria. The governement usually thinks that the solution to a problem is to make 'bans' as part of a reform. We keep banning everything, and soon we'll soon be banning ourselves. I think we need to get to a point in Naij where we see problems as challenges and see challenges as opportunities. A problem is meant to be solved, not scrapped. I know Okada could be bad and brought a lot of negativities with it, but we forget the positive aspects of having Okadas as part of our transport system. Okada services have reduced traffic, created jobs, a good way of thinking green (low CO2) etc. It's funny that what Nigerians see as a problem, they see it here in Enlgand as a way forward. The new campaign in the UK is encouraging people to use bikes (Think bike). Ok, the UK one might not be commercialised (at least for now), but it's fast becoming a part of the trasport system. I believe that the problem of reckless riding, robbery with okada, or whatever problem that's associated with the poor okadas can be tackled in other ways instead of an outright ban. Okada has come to stay in Nigeria, the solution is not to ban but to think of how to tackle the problem it brings with it. You don't throw the baby away with the water. You don't ban okada and throw thousands of riders into the town of joblessness, |
