Welcome to Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide This document first began as an effort to help teams within Google, but we thought it'd be just as useful to webmasters that are new to the topic of search engine optimization and wish to improve their sites' interaction with both users and search engines. Although this guide won't tell you any secrets that'll automatically rank your site first for queries in Google (sorry!), following the best practices outlined in this book will make it easier for search engines to crawl, index and understand your content. Search engine optimization is often about making small modifications to parts of your website. When viewed individually, these changes might seem like incremental improvements, but when combined with other optimizations, they could have a noticeable impact on your site's user experience and performance in organic search results. You're likely already familiar with many of the topics in this guide, because they're essential ingredients for any web page, but you may not be making the most out of them. Even though this guide's title contains the words "search engine", we'd like to say that you should base your optimization decisions first and foremost on what's best for the visitors of your site. They're the main consumers of your content and are using search engines to find your work. Focusing too hard on specific tweaks to gain ranking in the organic results of search engines may not deliver the desired results. Search engine optimization is about putting your site's best foot forward when it comes to visibility in search engines, but your ultimate consumers are your users, not search engines. Your site may be smaller or larger than our example site and offer vastly different content, but the optimization topics we discuss in this book should apply to sites of all sizes and types. INTERCONTINENTAL ESSAY COMPETITION Intercontinental Bank has launched a National Essay Competition for Nigerian university undergraduates to commemorate the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary in October 2010. According to the bank the essay competition, tagged “50 Stars @ 50”, was initiated to not only expand the scope of the bank’s commitment to educational development but also its way of demonstrating its support of human capital development in the country. As we mark the Nation's 50th Independence Anniversary, Intercontinental Bank is calling on Nigerian youths to give their voice to leadership through a National Essay Competition. EUROPEAN COMMISSION ESSAY COMPETITION European Commission Essay Competition was meant to create more awareness in the youth about issues relating to EU-Nigeria cooperation. The Secondary Schools’ Essay Competition was funded by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Development (DG DEV.). More than 1,000 secondary school children from schools across the country participated in the past competition. 1st Prize Educational grant: N500,000 Cash prize: N500,000 Plus a brand new Laptop 2nd Prize: Educational grant: N300,000 Cash prize N300,000 Plus a brand new Laptop 3rd Prize: Educational Grant: N200,000 Cash prize: N200,000 Plus a brand new Laptop 4th - 50th Prizes Plus a brand new Laptop The competition was in two categories (Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary). Altogether, 30 students emerged overall winners of the EC essay competition The first three winners in each category received one desktop computer and accessories, plus a cash grant of N50,000, N30,000 and N20,000 for books respectively. The runners-up in each category received a grant of N10,000 each for books. The Prize-giving events were organized in three zones: in Abuja for schools in the North, Lagos for schools in the West and Owerri for schools in the East. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST Present and future full-time undergraduate students who are interested in how to strike the proper balance between economics and ethics, markets and morality are encouraged to participate in the Culture of Enterprise international student essay contest. The Culture of Enterprise Project annually sponsors an international student essay contest on the topic "Can Character and Communities Survive in an Age of Globalization?" The contest is designed to encourage students to reflect on the relationship between free enterprise and the institutions and mores that define a particular culture.
