MONROVIA, (Reuters) – The last four cases of Ebola in Liberia were discharged from a treatment clinic in the capital Monrovia on Monday, meaning there were no more confirmed carriers of the deadly virus in the West African country.

The four men, released from the ELWA treatment unit to cheers and applause, were part of an outbreak of the virus in Margibi County just outside Monrovia discovered in late June. Two other confirmed cases have since died.

More than 11,200 people have died from Ebola since an epidemic broke out in December 2013 in neighbouring Guinea. Liberia was declared Ebola-free on May 9 but reported a new case nearly two months later. The outbreak is also still active in Sierra Leone and Guinea.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday arrived Washington DC on four-day official visit to United States where he would discuss bilateral issues with President Barrack Obama and other government officials.

The president, who arrived Joint Based Andrews Airport Washington, was received by the Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Mrs Linda Thomas-Greenfield and Mr James Entwistle, US Ambassador to Nigeria.

Others at the airport to receive the president included the Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Prof. Ade Adefuye, Nigerian embassy officials and governors of Borno, Nasarawa, Imo, Oyo and Edo.

NAN reports that the president, who left the airport straight to the Blair House, his guest house at Pensylvania Avenue, immediately went into meetings with officials of the United States government officials.

Buhari and other guests will also be hosted to a dinner by Madeline Albright.

On Monday, the president is slated to have breakfast meeting on governance to be hosted by the US Vice-President Joe Biden, before his meeting with Obama.

The main event of Buhari on Monday is his meeting with Obama.

NAN reports that the meeting, slated for 11:00 a.m. local time (about 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time, will be taking place at the Oval Office White House.

Other events on Monday include Media Chat with the Secretary of Commerce, ECOWAS Ambasssdors in Washington, US Attorney General, Secretary of Treasury and a group of potential investors.

Buhari is also to be hosted to a dinner by the US Chamber of Commerce and Corporate Council.

On Tuesday, the president will have interactive session with the media at 7:00 a.m. and later meet with officials of the World Health Organisation on economic assistance programme for the North-East.

The president will meet with the president of the World Bank group as well as the representative of the Bill Gates Foundation.

He will also meet with the US Secretary of state John Kerry, Director of the CIA and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The president meeting with the class of 1980 US Army War College, where the president is an alumnus will also hold on Tuesday after which he will address a joint session of the Senate and House committees on foreign Affairs at the Capitol Hill.

Buhari will address Nigerian Youths in the United States at the Chancery as well as participate in a town hall meeting with Nigerians in Diaspora.

He will wrap up the visit with interactive session with the Nigerian media and the National Democratic Institute before departing for Nigeria on Wednesday.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Monday denied speculations that that his administration was planning to sack 10,000 workers.

Aregbesola in a statement by his media aide, Semiu Okanlawon, said in Osogbo that “the so-called plan” to sack 10,000 workers is a figment of an imagination by the opposition party in the state.

According to the statement, nowhere has the Aregbesola administration signifies any intention to sack any worker.

“The workers’ sack speculation was part of the opposition party calculated move to misinform workers, confuse them and demoralise them.

“Discerning and decent people have come to the conclusion that when opposition makes any allegation, you must quickly dismiss it as being in its character to fabricate falsehood to confuse unsuspecting masses.

“This latest falsehood is part of the opposition tactics to misinform workers, confuse them and demoralise them. Nowhere has the Aregbesola’s administration signified any intention to sack any worker.

A girl of 10 who complained at school of stomach ache gave birth just hours later. She was rushed to hospital in Brazil by teachers and found her to be in the late stages of labour. Although only 7 months pregnant, the girl gave birth normally.

The girl and her baby are being cared for in the hospital’s neonatal unit. She told police her ­stepfather, 40, abused her. He is now accused of rape.


The girl’s mother claimed she had not seen her ­daughter’s stomach bulge and she had no idea she was pregnant. According to police, the girl’s mother said that her daughter started to struggle at school and become more introverted from October last year.

Police in Belo Horizonte, south-east Brazil, said: “The mother alleges that she, along with other family members, hadn’t noticed, taking into consideration the child’s small frame.”

The girl told police that her ex-stepfather would threaten to kill her mother and brother if she ever told about the abuse. He has been charged with rape of a child and illegal possession of firearms.

Osun state workers have agreed to resume work by suspending two-month old strike embarked by the workers over nonpayment of their salaries by the state government, The Punch reports.

The chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, Jacob Adekomi, made this announcement to newsmen that the strike had been called off following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between representatives of the union and the government on the lingering issue.

Jacob said the decision to end the strike is based on the understanding that the state government promised to offset January and February on Monday July 13 while the remaining salaries will be paid once the federal government releases the bailout fund to the state.


The MoU read : “Both parties, therefore, agreed to enter into this Memorandum of Understanding in anticipation of the bailout expected from the Federal Government on the issue of settlement of salary arrears and to show the state government’s commitment to the welfare of its workforce, having in mind the need to data towards the completion of the physical verification exercise of workers and retirees in the public service.

“The labour unions will suspend the ongoing strike on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding to allow all public service personnel audit and verification exercise as well as auditing of local government staff/ primary school teachers and retires take place.”

The government representative said that screening of workers was not a witch-hunt or meant to retrench any worker, stating that the exercise would enable the government to know the actual number of workers in the employ of the state.
The federal government had earlier intervene crisis engulfing many states in the country following their inability to pay workers salaries by releasing N400billion bailout fund to states.

This image of a 9-year-old Filipino boy attempting to do homework in the street, under the dim light of a nearby McDonald’s, has prompted an international outpouring of donations.

“We’re overjoyed,” said his stunned mother Christina Espinosa, a grocery store worker who makes less than $2 a day. “I don’t know what I will do with all of these blessings.”

The photo of the diligent student, Daniel Cabrera, went viral shortly after a passerby posted an image of him on Facebook last moth. The image was shared nearly 7,000 times. The family had received schoolbooks, clothing, a reading lamp and a college scholarship fund.

Espinosa described her son as “studious” and determined to obtain an advanced degree.

“He would insist on going to school even without his lunch money because I have no money to give,” Espinosa said.

Joyce Torrefranca, the young woman who posted the photo, is touched that her simple photo made such a difference.

A gunman is holding up a Primark store with at least ten people inside in the Paris suburb of Villeneuve-la-Garenne.

According to police reports, there is a hold-up in Villeneuve-la-Garenne this morning, and it is believed that two or three men are holding up the budget store inside the Qwartz shopping centre.

An anonymous police source reveals that “Around 6:30 am (0530 GMT), two or three armed criminals went into the Primark store for what we think was initially an attempt at armed robbery.”

A man who suspected to be a Boko Haram sect on a suicide bomb mission has been reported arrested by the Chadian military in N’djamena the Chad capital city.

This arrest is coming one day after a man who also disguised like a woman was reported said to have denoted bomb killing 14 people near a market.It was gathered the man was arrested near the market where Boko Haram suicide bomber has earlier struck.

There have been increasing case of suicide bombings in Chad which are linked to Boko Haram following the country partnership with Nigeria in helping to flush the sects from Nigeria.

The Chadian authority had earlier banned the wearing of full face veil after a suicide bombing close to military facility in the capital.



Boko Haram sects are now using new strategy of concealing their identity using women clothing and face veil to disguise as woman and also using young ladies who were said to hid the bombs in their belly region.
