Career / Are You Switching Career To Tech? Self-taught Vs Bootcamp by tech365ng: 1:53pm On Feb 11, 2023
Both self-taught and bootcamp have their pros and cons.

Self-taught may be
1. Cheaper
2. Good choice for those who love figuring things out on their own.
However, it also has its own downside such as
1. It takes longer to understand many concepts as you may have to move from one video to another for clarity.
2. Debugging issues may be tough at the beginning as you may not have someone handy who can guide you on areas you are having challenges.
3. You spend more money on data to either consume or download tutorials
4. Tutorial hell. Since there isn't a structured part, you tend to watch fundamentals again and again instead of moving to the next stage on time.
5. Lack of recommendation. Even after you have learned enough, you may not have mentors that can refer you for jobs or internships.

Bootcamp has the following benefits
1. Faster learning pace as the knowledge is simplified, and more structured with projects in between to shorten your learning curve.
You are able to cover fundamentals within a short time and move to the intermediate stage faster.
2. Support. Having someone who can provide a guide whenever you face challenges can be a lifesaver for beginners.
3. Referral for jobs and internship opportunities
4. Ability to network with other members of the Bootcamp
5. Updated curriculum as self-learners may be consuming old tutorials without knowing.
6. Leveraging the experience of the instructors and avoiding the mistakes they made much earlier.
The downside of bootcamp may be the fees, however, the support, structured nature of the training, and job recommendation make it worthwhile.
Tech365 offers bootcamp in data analytics, DevOps, software development, mobile app, digital marketing, UX design, and other key areas.

Career / 5 In Demand Digital Skills You Should Acquire In 2023 by tech365ng: 3:32pm On Jan 05, 2023
Are you switching careers to tech?
Are you planning to travel out and thinking of relevant tech skills to acquire?
Do you have basic computer skills but needed something more in order to get a high-paying job or promotion at work?
Or do you just want to explore tech to complement your current career?

Here are the top skills you can choose from.

1. Software Development/ Engineering

A software developer is someone who writes programs (step-by-step instructions on a computer) to build an application (software) that solves a specific problem. It could be creating accounting software, a school management system, a hotel booking platform and more. The websites you visit like youtube, Facebook, and Jumia are examples of software built by programmers.

It is a skill that is in high demand globally with a high salary. It can be faster to get a job as a software developer compared to other skills as you can easily monetize the skill on a freelancing platform, work for a one-man business or build your own software and get people to pay to use it or sell it to organizations.
Having software development skills can help you adapt to other areas of tech with ease. However, it is not for everyone. To know if software development is a good career for you, a software developer needs to have the following abilities

Strong logical and critical thinking. Writing programs requires lots of logic and telling the computer what to do at each instance. Being able to break down complex problems into smaller, more manageable pieces is an essential skill a software developer must possess.
Troubleshooting. You should be someone who is comfortable checking the reason why something is not working and researching possible solutions online.
Take the initiative. You may be required to add new features to the software. As such, you need to be able to use what you already know to come up with possible ways to create the needed feature.
Persistence: Developing software can be a complex and time-consuming process, and it's important for software developers to be able to stick with it and see projects through to completion.
Adaptability: The field of software development is constantly evolving, and software developers need to be able to adapt and learn new technologies and techniques.

2. Data Analyst/ Data Science

Data analysts are those who take the record of an organization (data) and analyze it to extract valuable information that can help the company make better decisions.
Eg. A company may want to know which product is bringing the highest revenue or the customer that is giving them the most profit and more. All these are and more achieved through data analysis. With machine learning, you can even predict who should be hired by a company, those that qualify for loans without talking to them one on one. This is what is used to recommend movies on youtube and Netflix, related product recommendations on Amazon and more.

Data analyst jobs may not be as much as software in Nigeria, however, it is in high demand abroad as they need people to help them make sense of their data. As a data analyst, you can work in any industry. Be it finance, health, education, government and more.

To know if data analysis is for you, a data analyst needs to possess the following

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills: Data analysts need to be able to identify patterns and trends in data and use that information to solve problems.
Familiarity with statistical analysis: A strong understanding of statistical concepts and techniques is important for data analysts to be able to draw accurate conclusions from data. Even though there are libraries that will do the calculation for you, you need to be comfortable working with data.
Curiosity: Data analysts should have a natural curiosity and desire to explore and understand data.
Familiarity with programming languages: Knowledge of programming languages such as Python and SQL can be helpful for data analysts to be able to work with and analyze data.
Strong communication skills: You need to be able to present complex data in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing to clients, management or stakeholder.

3. DevOps/ Cloud computing

DevOps engineer is someone who takes software that was built by the programmer and moves it to a server so people can have access to it from anywhere in the world. Just like you are able to access Facebook, Youtube, Linkedin and other platforms with little or no downtime. Also, they ensure these processes are automated so they dont have to manually do them again and again.
Having programming knowledge can be helpful but not a must to get started.
DevOps engineers are scarce as such they pay them well abroad.
A DevOps engineer needs to have the following abilities

Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills: DevOps engineers need to be able to identify and troubleshoot problems quickly and effectively.
Adaptability: The field of DevOps is constantly evolving, and DevOps engineers need to be able to adapt and learn new technologies and techniques.
Attention to detail: DevOps requires a high level of attention to detail, as even small mistakes can have significant consequences.
Collaborative mindset: DevOps requires close collaboration between development and operations teams, and DevOps engineers need to be able to work well in a team environment.
Automation skills: DevOps emphasizes automation, and DevOps engineers should be skilled at using tools and processes to automate tasks.

Jobs/Vacancies / 5 Steps To Take If You Need A Job by tech365ng: 5:59pm On Jul 21, 2022
1. Get a high-demand skill.
Organizations don't hire just because they want to hire, they hire because the person can add value to the organization. Do you currently have a skill set that can improve the organization?
If your answer is no, you may want to start with getting in-demand skills first.
Based on my area of specialization, I highly recommended tech skills as it applies to all industries and are in demand globally but there is a non-tech skill in demand too, you can research them.

2. Build competence
If you already have some high-demand skills, how competent are you in them?
It is not enough to have a certificate or finish a course, can you use the knowledge acquired to solve real-world problems?
Have you invested enough time to get experience, build projects and put the skill to work to get results?
This can increase your chances by stating them on your CV

3. Grow your network
Most jobs are not usually published as most organizations usually ask for recommendations or referrals times before posting jobs publicly. Do people who know you know that you are proficient in the area you are seeking for a job? As a job seeker, you can't keep your search to yourself. For people to recommend you for the opportunity, they need to know and be sure you are proficient in the area.
Share about what you do consistently online and let your profile especially on LinkedIn reflect your skill and competence.
If people go through your posts and they can't see anything related to what you are seeking a job for, it limits your chances. Your profile is your new CV. Some employers use it to assess candidates.

4. Do things differently
If you are doing what everyone is doing, you will likely get the same result. To get different results, do things differently.
Research about organizations that does what you are interested in.
Reach out to them via email, or social media, contact their HR or visit where possible. They may even have openings you aren't aware of.

5. Review your CV
Some people may have competence but their CV is nothing to write home about.
Organizations will judge you by your CV and performance at interviews. Be intentional about these two.
Pay a professional if need be so you can stand out.

In conclusion, you don't have control over when you will get a job, however, you are in control over how you spend your time while waiting for your dream job. While you are waiting for your desired job,
- Volunteer to gain experience
- Join different international and local job posting websites
- Search for your desired jobs on LinkedIn, Google and other directories
- Invest time to learn more
- Build more projects to increase your chances when the opportunity comes
Remember, life doesn't respond to self-pity, it responds to your actions.
