Family / Re: Can A Pregnant Woman's Job Be Terminated Without Any Reason In Nigeria? by tomX1(m): 6:56am On Jan 20, 2012 |
It is legally and moral wrong, but it is rampant in this country. If you can fight it, do so else just move on. My general advice to ladies will be that: Before accepting an employment in any firm, always ask about the company's policy or package regarding expecting mothers, thing like, maternal leave, day care, etc. If they don't have a clear cut package then don't accept the offer unless you don't plan to be pregnant during the course of your employment with them. |

<quote> I hope you remember that Jacob had to struggle to be alone. I hate being a slave, most salary earners are slaves </quote> Joseph was never recorded to have been freed from slavery but he was second only to Pharaoh in wealth and influence. Roberto Goizueta died an employee but was one of the worlds richest men. Steve Ballmer is still an employee an at over $12 Billion US, he is one of the world richest men. |

@success4, there is a reason why the "capitalist theory" is called a "THEORY". Anyway success does not come by any one route and there is as much arguments for paid employment as there are for entrepreneurship. The very qualities you need to succeed as an entrepreneur are the same qualities you need a to succeed in paid employment. At the end if you are a success, your success is not diminished because you were under employment, Jacob was a success under Laban, Joseph was a success under pharaoh, Steve Ballmer is a success under Microsoft, Roberto Goizueta was a success under cocacola, etc. |

Self employed , Corporate/government employed , it all adds up to the same thing: employment. There is nothing wrong about being employed in a other man's business because your employer is like a client, he pays you for your service. There are self employed people who are rich Bill gates Dangote etc There are employed people who are also rich Steve Balmer was worth over $6 billion US over ten years ago and he is a Microsoft EMPLOYEE. There are many self employed traders in Nigeria who can barely scratch a living. I know people in corporate employment netting close to #5 million a month in Nigeria. It's all a matter of perspective and how well you play your cards. 1 Like |
Phones / Any Windows Phone 7 Engineer In The House? by tomX1(m): 6:38am On Nov 03, 2011 |
Hi all, I wonder if there is any windows phone 7 (WP7) enginner on this forum. I have a HTC HD7 which I already upgraded to WP7.5 (Mango). After upgrading most of my softwares, I tried running google map (the latest update as at 3 days ago) and it was not only hanging, the phone got much warmer than ussual. I switched it on and off and did not bother using any other app. latter the phone more or less restarted itself again but freezes on the HTC startup screen. It's been like that for days now. It wouldn't booth up and just keeps getting warmer and wouldn't respond to any control until the battery runs down or I take out the baterries to restart it. I tried connecting it to Zune on my laptop but Zune couldn't detect a phone. Any good phone engineer who has experience with WP7 should please send me his/her contacts via this post. Thank you all. |
Education / Re: Is It A Sin To Be Intelligent? by tomX1(m): 5:35pm On May 29, 2011 |
Proverbs 27:14 says: If you shout a pleasant greeting to a friend too early in the morning, it would be counted as a curse. If you are in the habit of jumping to peoples aid in class before they ask for help then you only belittle their intelligence and they are right to feel displeased (and call you ITK and such names). While you might mean well, I would say your problem is largely that of social maladjustment. You said you were an introvert, and now you are making a bold effort to be outgoing. While this is commendable it also allows you make alot of social gaffes too soon. The problem is you might be too naive to realize it and no one will correct you due to your perceived ITK posturing so you will simply become object of scorn. Tone it down. Lastly, please work on your written English. It leaves much to be desired. |
Phones / Re: Blackberry Or Htc? by tomX1(m): 1:00am On Apr 28, 2011 |
I use both bb (curve 8900) and HTC hd7 windows mobile. Now the curve 8900is not top of the line bb (I wish I had a storm so I could make a better comparison) but hd7 is about the highest HTC for now. One application with which the bb thumps the HTC is the bb map. It uses GPS to help u navigate and even shows the speed u are driving at. I tried three HTC GPS navigation software and none came close. The hd7 is also using an evolving platform so Microsoft is very cautious about file transfer (u can't use blue tooth yet And so on) Microsoft has promised updates to address this and we are already getting the updates. That said HTC beats the bb experience by a mile and this is not just comming from me. All my friends on bb who tried the HTC are getting one. It has more apps and functionality than a bb user can dream about. The camera and video is awesome, I use my HTC as a scanner and it works great. Messaging is a breeze. My face book is directly interfaced with my address book so I can seamlessly post to face book and make calls and send SMS in the same beat. Too many applications to choose from and it multitasks like it was born to do it (it was). I could spend a whole day and still not be done praising the hd7 but ur personal experience will be the best judge. Finally no phone I have seen yet comes with better support for Microsoft office than widows7 phones. |
Phones / Re: Hw Do U Ping With 5800? by tomX1(m): 12:12am On Apr 28, 2011 |
BlackBerry messenger is just another messaging software. That it comes bundled with every version of blackberry doesn't change the fact that it is a messaging software. However it should be noted that since it's use is restricted among bb users it is not as versatile as other non discriminatory messaging apps in the market. A messenger that can be used on a larger variety of platforms with less restriction to users will always be considered as better. In the near future you might just see that RIM might become more liberal with the bb messenger, allowing other devices to download it and chat with their bb friends to boot it's popularity and appeal (this has always been the trend in such matters) |
Phones / Re: How Do I Manually Configure Mtn Gprs Settings On A Htc Desire Hd Phone? by tomX1(m): 5:10pm On Apr 20, 2011 |
Hi, I am posing via a HTC HD7 and I think the procedure might be d same. Under "settings" select "cellular" and scroll to the bottom and click on the "edit apn" button and fill out the field with the settings you got from mtn. If you have already activated ur data plan then you should be able to browse the moment you browse away from that page. |

Strange things do happen they say. Every afternoon on working days, for some time now, two young bikers come over to the street adjacent to my company's office block. They park their bikes, and armed with take-away packs from whatever eatery, they jump into the dumpster my company uses, make themselves at home while they feast on their fried rice and chicken or whatever take-away they have that day. They are so presistent in their actions that the security personel on duty are already fed up of confronting them. Strange isn't it?

On Microsoft platforms (Visual C++) you can use the CObject array. It's is a dynamic array that is specialy designed for storing objects and you do not have to define a size for it on creation. Read up on it, it may serve your purpose. |

Programming / Re: Web Vs Software Development by tomX1(m): 6:21am On Sep 23, 2010 |
The choice you make depends on the nature of the solution you are deploying. Some solutions are better on the web and some are better on desktop and LAN/WAN servers. Some are a marriage of both. I believe many people in Nigeria prefer the web based application option because it helps them circumvent the piracy issue. Others like it because it gives a relatively easier means of coming up with a fairly decent and eye catching and modernistic GUI in a relatively short time as opposed trying same on say Visual c++ (you'd almost grow old doing your GUI). My preference is still the desk based solution - I am probably a geek like that. I find myself being able to build very fast and robust applications that deploy across networks and servers and still have web interfaces when and where required. I also don't have sleepless nights on the piracy thing. I have invested my time on building security options that work just fine for me. When you have to build an application for a small client (or some clients generally) they would prefer the desktop option so as to avoid the overhead cost of running their application on the web. Some clients also like to keep their applications of the web for security reasons. I’d say: Be conversant with all the options and select or integrate them to get your desired solution as the situation warrants 1 Like |
Health / Re: Does Alcohol Contribute Anything To The Body. by tomX1(m): 1:06pm On May 29, 2010 |
In low doses alchohol helps to regulate blood sugar, increases ones libido and it is strongly recomended for men above thirty to help check prostate cancer. I never drank in my younger days but now as I grow older and more sedentery, I try to take a bottle or two of stout every week just to keep a balance in my alchohol level. |
Programming / Re: Any Lisp/scheme Programmers In Here? by tomX1(m): 12:10pm On May 29, 2010 |
DonSegmond: I've have been doing things like that even with rudimentary Javascript and PHP does it elegantly too. Programs like C++ takes it to a whole new level! To say C++ cannot do this simply saying you are not familiar with the platform. What do you think Your Visual Studio Compiler is built with? Visual C++. Most microsoft products are also built with Visual C++ and they all have macro tools and inbuilt programing interfaces. Many code generators are built with C++ and Java. This is no news. DonSegmond: In any programing effort that goes beyond rudimentary level, debuging, portability and continuity are issues of big consideration. If your codes are not readable then you will find that it is of little use even to you the developer when you have to debug and / or update it much latter. DonSegmond: When you use a script generator like your visual compilers, web development softwares etc, what are they doing? they are generationg codes in response to the things you do and the choices you make. These softwares were not built with lisp. DonSegmond: Not realy true! In the early years access to compilers for almost all kinds of program (FORTRAN, FORMIAN, C, BASIC, COBOL, PASCAL, etc) even the ones you have not heard about where "through workstations in the academia environment" to qoute you. The advent of Personal computing changed the trend and as expected most programmers concentrated their efforts on the platforms that where more robust (stable), more powerful, more elegantly deployable etc. This became the age of C++, VB, Java, PHP Pearl, etal. True Some people still work on lisp but hell even FORTRAN and COBOL and such likes have newer versions too but their age is past. DonSegmond: I trust in the fact that most AI programmers are not stupid. If LISP was a better platform then most of these very smart people would 've been using it. It's lack of popularity is because it is not the best tool for the job. It can do the job but it's not the best , not by a mile. |

@agathamari, thanks too. Is this frankel appliance commonly available in Nigerian dental clinics? |
Programming / Re: Any Lisp/scheme Programmers In Here? by tomX1(m): 6:50pm On May 28, 2010 |
@DonSegmond, The concept of abstraction is inherent in all OOP languages. The thing is how readable is a language like lisp and how proficient is it when it comes to builsding robust apps. Programes that even use lisp as a scripting language are not even built with lisp. as for readability I wouldn't compare Lisp: (- (* (+ x y) (/ a b)) c) with C/C++: ((x+y)*(a/b)) - c; tundebabzy:I belive authors of every programming language books always claim their platform is the best. There is a reason why languages like Java, C/C++/C# have achieved the amount of fame they have. Trust me it's not just hype you have to use them profficiently to realy understand. Besides Lisp is not the only ( nor the most proficient) platform for AI (I take it AI as you used it is Artificial Inteligence). How many renowned games or simulators do you know that were developed with lisp? |

Hi nairalanders, My little boy (1 year old) has an underbite. He's got only 8 teeth (4 uppers and 4 lowers) but the lower teeth tend to overlap the uppers. I 've been told this problem is best corrected early. can anyone kindly tell me and good dental clinic that can handle this problem properly. Thanks. |

Hi @Poster, More out of sheer curiousity than anything else, I cut my teeth on common lisp over ten years ago. in all that time, aside from a handfull of guys trying their hands on auto-lisp ( a watered down version of lisp that runs in autocad) I've not met anyone who mentioned lisp let alone works with it. So what do you want lisp for bro? |
Programming / Re: How Do You Program Without Light by tomX1(m): 7:41pm On May 04, 2010 |
Once upon a time I had to program without the benefit of a computer (never mind light). I guess it really helped 'cos I still spend more time on my scratch pad than I do on the system in any programming effort. If you are really down with programming it's kinda like an addiction. No matter the obstacle you will find a way around it. |
Software/Programmer Market / Re: Software Development by tomX1(m): 7:32pm On Apr 24, 2010 |
You can learn any language or programming paradigm that catches your fancy and that is very noble and good. But if your sole aim of wanting to learn this language is to tackle some problem which your company (a financial institution) is facing, then you are putting the cart before the horse The company is better off hiring seasoned programmers who will give a quick and proper solution to the problem without the added risk of beginners error putting the whole thing in jeopardy. Don't train yourself on the battle field, train in a boot camp then go to war or better leave the war to the seasoned soldiers. |
Computers / Trouble With Dell Inspiron Laptop by tomX1(m): 11:13am On Mar 23, 2010 |
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The problem is: I set a hard drive password but I can't recall the password. I tried to by-pass the password by removing the C-MOS battery for a minute but the system refused to booth after replacement ( even when I replaced the battery with a brand new one of the same spec). I also can't access my data by slaving the hard drive to another system because of the hard drive password. Can anyone offer helpfull advice on how to rectify the problem or on how to access my data on the hard drive? |
Culture / Re: Cultural Myths From Around Nigeria by tomX1(m): 9:07am On Jan 04, 2010 |
In some parts of Nigeria, you are only allowed to walk into a room where someone died, backwards. This is supposed to give the spirits hovering in the room ample time to vanish (or something like that). Violators risk getting slapped by an angry spirit. Funeral + Coronation In Idoma land, the king (Och'Idoma) is not meant to be mourned when he dies so his funeral is held at the sametime as his coronation. |

Culture / Cultural Myths From Around Nigeria by tomX1(m): 4:06pm On Dec 29, 2009 |
Growing up in Nigeria, we got exposed to a lot of cultural myths. I think some of these will make great materials for novels and movies like "Lord of the rings" etc. If you know any good myths or legends share them here in brief. Here are some I know: 1. Moving Trees - In northern Nigeria (Zaria) where I schooled there was a myth about big baobab cotton trees that moved at night and kidnap anyone whom the catch lurking about and imprison them in their trunks. 2. Inedible Fish - In Kogi state, there is said to be a river called the "Inachalo River" (or something of the sort. The legend is that the river is cursed and no matter how long one boils a fish caught from that river it will always remain raw. It is also said that any injury which a person receives from the bones of the fishes from the river will never heal. 3. Forbidden Orchad - There is said to be a wild enchanted orchard in the forests of Benue state where bountiful fruits grow all year round. Anyone who finds it may eat to his/her fill but if you attempt to remove so much as a seed from there then you will remain lost until you eat it or throw it down. 4. It was believed in the north that when a whirl wind is blowing, if one is bold and agile enough to run into the eye of the storm and catch leaves swirling around, it would turn to money. please share some of yours. |
