Politics / Nigeria’s Future Is Bright –jonathan by Toonice(m): 4:26pm On Nov 18, 2011 |
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan is confident that the country has made steady progress in spite of the numerous challenges it is grappling with, stressing the need for all sections to work together to consolidate the gains already achieved. He said this when he inaugurated a presidential committee on the review of outstanding constitutional issues at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday. Jonathan, who observed that Nigeria was at the threshold of great possibilities, said despite the present challenges, the nation's sense of togetherness was strong and its democracy was deepening. “I make bold to say that the outlook for the future of our country is good. We are at peace with the world, and we remain well-respected internationally,” he said. He added that since every nation was a work in progress, each one had its share of unfinished businesses, adding that “Nigeria is no different. Now is the time for us to make even greater efforts to find new answers to old-age problems that have long confronted us.” Jonathan said he inaugurated the committee to develop draft bills on previously agreed issues that would go a long way to strengthen the unity of the country. The committee has Justice Mohammed Belgore as chairman and Senator Udoma Udo Udoma as vice chairman. Chief Ebenezer Baba-tope, Mr Ledum Mitee, Dr Abubakar Saddique, Ms Comfort Obi, Mr Peter Esele, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, Professor Jerry Gana, Mr Tessy Ikimi, Mr G.O.S. Miri, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, Ambassador Jibrin Chinade, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha, Professor Anya O. Anya, and Dr Chukwu-emeka Ezeife are members. Also named as members are Alhaja Salimot Badru, Hajia Najatu Mohammed, Mr Ferdinand Agu, Alhaji Wakil Mohammed and Mr Halima Alfa. http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/31454-nigerias-future-is-bright-jonathan |
Education / ‘6 Million Nigerian Children Don’t Attend School’ by Toonice(m): 4:23pm On Nov 18, 2011 |
About six million Nigerian children are working and they don’t attend school at all while one million children are forced to drop out of school due to poverty or because of the demand to contribute to family income. The Chief Executive Officer of Hope Worldwide International, a Lagos-based non-governmental organisation, Mr Olaosebikan Clement, who disclosed this in Lagos on Thursday at a press conference on the upcoming Great Hope Walk 2011, also stated that Nigeria had one of the largest burdens of Orphans and Vulnerable Children(OVC) in the world. “The 2008 Situation Assessment and Analysis (SAA) on OVC revealed that 17.5 million (24.5per cent) of Nigerian children are OVC. The survey further showed that 7.3 million were orphaned through various causes,” he added. According to him, major causes of orphanage in Nigeria have been identified to include AIDS, road accidents, maternal mortality and ethno-religious conflicts while a large number of children are vulnerable due to poverty, negative cultural practices and gender inequality. Speaking on the 10km Great Hope Walk billed for December 3 in Lagos, Clement said the objective of the walk was to create awareness on the plight of orphans and vulnerable children in the society. He said it was also to increase awareness and galvanise action towards the case of the abused, the trafficked and children on the street. Health / Nigerians Spent $300M In 2010 For Heart Surgeries In India by Toonice(m): 11:41am On Nov 16, 2011 |
The Kanu Heart Foun-dation (KHF) has dis-closed that Nigerians spent a whooping $300million for open heart surgeries in India in 2010. To put an end to this anomaly and conserve the country’s hard-earned foreign exchange, the KHF has proposed the establishment of a cardiac centre in Abuja. Addressing newsmen on the proposed fund raiser for the project which is slated for February 2012, the founder of KHF and former captain of the Super Eagles, Mr Kanu Nwankwo, said the plan to build the cardiac centre was in line with the aims and objectives of KHF. He said the project, estimated to cost $35million or N5billion, would, upon completion, perform at least 250 open heart surgeries annually with free treatment for heart patients between the ages of 1-12 while adults would receive subsidised treatment. To achieve the fund raiser objective, he said the foundation had appointed Messrs Red Sapphire, a leading marketing communications and events management company led by Ono Akpe. “Presently, it costs KHF five times more to send one child overseas for open heart surgery than if the surgery was performed here in Nigeria if the facilities were available,” Nwankwo declared. He said since the inception of KHF in 2000, the foundation had spent $4.2million, an average of $10,000 per person for surgeries outside Nigeria. http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/31305-nigerians-spent-300m-in-2010-for-heart-surgeries-in-india |

Politics / Jonathan Defends GCON Award To Dangote by Toonice(m): 9:29am On Nov 15, 2011 |
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, conferred various national awards on 355 Nigerians and foreigners who have distinguished themselves in service to their community, taking time to specifically defend government’s decision to honour business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, with the nation’s second highest award of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). Speaking at the ceremony which took place at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, Jonathan responded on criticisms of the manner recipients had been selected, saying in particular that Dangote got his honour because of his enterprise and provision of jobs to thousands of Nigerians. “You can see today that we have recognised Aliko Dangote with the highest on the GCON series because we must recognise enterprise. This is a man who has been able to employ thousands of Nigerians as we heard it from the citation,” he said. “If Aliko did not have that business acumen to build that empire, probably, we wouldn’t have had somebody to employ thousands of Nigerians. So, those who by their innate abilities and creative energies have been able to make impact in our society even deserve more honour than those of us holding political offices. So, we would continue to encourage enterprise, creativity and Nigerians who have excelled in whatever form,” he explained. Jonathan, who told the audience that he was aware of the criticisms trailing the process, said he had directed the relevant agencies to take note and ensure improvements in future exercise so that it would continue to serve the purpose it was meant for. According to him, “national honours are not merely decorative; they remind us of an important part of our responsibilities as citizens. We must always endeavour to do the best for our country. Even as we realise with deep humility that all human beings are fallible, we must look forward with confidence and hope that our country, through each and every one of us, can indeed put its God-given endowments to the best possible use. “Let me re-emphasise how some of the people were selected, because there are comments from very young people who are a bit confused about how people are selected for national honours. As I have mentioned, even the most celebrated Nobel Peace Prize is being criticised. So, definitely you will expect criticisms. “But in Nigeria you have three awards: two are parallel, and we gave two today, the GCFR and GCON series and, of course, the Nigerian National Merit Award. The Nigerian National Merit award is meant for scholars and not just scholars but scholars with distinction and the committee [members] that will select those who will receive the award [chosen] among the eggheads. “The president plays almost no role in selecting who wins the merit award, because that is for academic division. The president plays the ceremonial position of just decorating or presenting the award to those scholars. “But the National Honours criteria are different. It is based on what an individual has contributed to his community, his state, his country and how you have projected this country outside. It does not depend on how many certificates you have; it does not depend even on the size of the certificate you have and it does not even depend on the status you have in the society and I need to mention that,” he said. To buttress his assertion, the president remarked that even the common man was entitled to national award as long as he distinguished himself in the service of his community. He said: “The traditional birth attendant that probably works in area where there is no doctor and successfully delivers hundreds of babies can be awarded and recognised by the president. So is a sportsman, who is illiterate, but a good footballer, wrestler or a boxer and projects the image of this country globally and wins laurels and brings us to limelight could be recognised in this honours series. “Also, in the case of the military, an officer, a corporal or even a private soldier, could be given a medal that probably a colonel or general might not have for show of gallantry. “So, the position you occupy does not give an automatic award except for some positions like the GCFR, which is given to anybody who becomes the president of this country or the GCON, given to anybody who becomes the vice-president or the head of the National Assembly or the head of the judiciary. “These are given by virtue of their positions, but others are given by virtue of what you have contributed to the society; not necessarily because of the office you hold,” he declared. Jonathan stated that people who deliberately worked against their community or the nation could not be expected to be considered for national honours. “Do you use that office to destroy us or do you use it for the development of your domain? So also is a youth leader, a woman leader or an elder. Do you use that position to bring development and peace to your people at your community level, local government level, state level and the national level or use it to bring crisis or destruction to our people?” Jonathan asked. The 355 awards conferred on Monday brought the number of such awardees to 3,924 since the exercise began in 1963. A breakdown of the latest awards showed that one person got GCON, 65 Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON); 38 Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR); 74 Officer of the Order Federal Republic (OFR); 69 Member of the Officer of the Order Federal Republic (MFR); 71 Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON); 28 Member of the Order of the Niger (MON); two First Class Federal Republic Medal and three Second Class Federal Republic Medal. In his welcome address, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, said the 2010 edition of the national honours could not take place because of preparations for the 2011 general election and was therefore joined with the 2011 edition. Apart from Dangote, other prominent awardees were the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal; governors of Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Edo, Kaduna, Katsina, Niger, Rivers and Jigawa states, Godswill Akpabio, Peter Obi, Liyel Imoke, Adams Oshiom-hole, Patrick Yakowa, Mua’zu Babangida, Rotimi Amaechi and Sule Lamido respectively. There were also Service Chiefs, including the Chief of Defence Staff, Oluseyi Petinrin; Chief of Air Staff, Muhammed Dikko Umar; Chief of Naval Staff, Saad Ibrahim; Chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika; traditional rulers, including King Theophilus Jacob Tom Princewill, the Amanyanabo of Kalabari Kingdom and the Okere of Saki, Oba Kelani Olatoyese Larinre. http://nigerianbulletin.com/2011/11/15/jonathan-defends-gcon-award-to-dangote-daily-trust/ |

Politics / Tribunal Upholds Ajimobi’s Victory by Toonice(m): 4:37pm On Nov 11, 2011 |
Oyo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal yesterday dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the emergence of Senator Abiola Ajimobi as the governor of the state in the April 26 governorship election. The PDP is challenging Ajimobi on allegation of possessing dual citizenship of both Nigeria and United States of America (USA). The judgment by the tribunal thus brought to an end the almost five month legal tussle. While reading the judgment of the three-man panel made up of Idris Kutigi and Ebiyerin Omukoro, its Chairman, Justice Muazu AbdulKadir Pindiga, said the petition lacked merit and was speculative, while also awarding N10, 000 cost each in favour of the three respondents; Ajimobi, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The tribunal ruled that the petitioner failed to back up its claims with relevant documents, adding that it could not use its power to obtain any document, which the petitioner could not obtain. Justice Pindiga said: “The burden of proof depends on circumstances of the case. He, who invokes the act of law, should be the first to prove it. From the above, the burden of proof depends on the plaintiff. “The governor is a citizen of Nigeria by birth and he has not renounced his citizenship of Nigeria. A person can be issued American Green Card, yet, he does not lose his citizenship of Nigeria.” The panel maintained that it granted fair hearing to all parties in the case, while recalling that the USA consular was contacted by requesting for some documents. “The failure to produce the documents is fatal to the presentation of this case,” the panel said. Shortly after the verdict of the tribunal, Governor Ajimobi said the victory at the election petitions tribunal was a triumph of democracy and the rule of law. Ajimobi added that those fighting against him were fighting against God. While thanking God and the people of the state for ensuring his triumph at the tribunal, the governor noted that the judgment had further confirmed that there were men of honour in the nation’s judiciary. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Public Communications, Dr. Festus Adedayo, Ajimobi said: “First of all, we give glory to God; we glorify His holy name for guiding us; for helping us and ensuring that we are able to overcome those who planned evil against us. I think we should thank God for that. “Secondly, the judgment only confirms that there are men of honour in the judiciary, because if we were to go by the past, probably it would have been another story,’’ he said. While further debunking the dual citizenship allegation by the PDP, the governor declared that he was not an American citizen. “Ab initio, I was not an American citizen. Yes, I studied in America, and I was once an immigrant, and once you are an immigrant and you leave the place from six months to a year, you automatically lose that residency, which I have since lost.“Even if I were to be a dual citizen, once by birth, I am a Nigerian citizen; I’m entitled to be a governor of Oyo State. Either by birth or by naturalization, I have the right as the governor of Oyo State. And all those who don’t want me to be are fighting against God,’’ he said. |

Education / Children Of The Poor Can Rub Shoulders With The Children Of The Rich By Choice: by Toonice(m): 10:34am On Nov 09, 2011 |
Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has said the education policies of his administration are designed to bridge the gap between the rich and poor in the state. The governor, who stated this while inspecting some of the mega schools being constructed for pupils of primary schools in the state, which are in different stages of completion, said education was a veritable tool to fight poverty. Mimiko added that the Mega School in Okitipupa, Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state and the Model Secondary School in the Oke-Ijebu area in Akure had been completed, while those in Ikare, in Akoko North-West Local Government and Ondo West were at different stages of completion. He also said at least 12 of such projects had been awarded and contractors were at various stages of construction. They included the ones in Ile-Oluji, Ore, Oka-Akoko, Owo and Akure, the state capital. Mimiko explained that his administration planned to use the school to enhance social integration aimed at bridging the gap between the rich and the poor in the society. He said: “We are creating a social integration to ensure that the children of the poor can rub shoulders with the children of the rich by choice in the society. Nothing but the best is good for us in Ondo State. We told our people that what we are going to put on the ground will be world-class for the future of our state and the future of Nigeria.” “We believe that for us to re-engineer education and reposition it, we must provide the best infrastructural facilities of global standard. We are happy that we dreamt about this and God has helped us to realise it.” He was optimistic that the quality of the facilities and the conducive learning environment being provided by his administration would encourage the younger generation to embrace education, which he referred to as the only sector that could break the vicious cycle of abject poverty. |

Then the police officer said 'if you are indeed a pastor where is your bible? Because you should have a bible with you, the pastor brought out his bible and the offier orderd him 'open and read mathew 5:25-26 to me. The pastor opens and reads ''settle matters quickly with your advesary who is taking you to court, do it while you are still with him on the way or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge may hand you over to the officer and you will be thrown into prison, i tell you the truth you will not get out untill you have paid the last penny.'' The court was also urged to issue a declaration that that generation, transmission, trading, distribution and bulk supply and resale of electricity all of which constitute the power sector of the economy is a major sector of the economy that cannot be validly, legally and lawfully privatized by the Federal Government of Nigeria. |
