[color=#770077]2 years ago I saw same issue in my workshop, sadly It threw no codes so I just replaced the transmission.

Good day Gazzuzz.

My Avensis 2007 delays before it engages DRIVE after parking for a while (say overnight). Afterward, it drives smoothly and will engage DRIVE readily without delay. Any idea what may be the issue?

Thank you

GAZZUZZ:

The abs pump is the module that processes speed information from the abs wheel speed sensors gotten off the pulsars on each wheel.

if you have no speed information, it means you have a fault in the abs system as there is no way all 4 wheel speed sensors will stop functioning at once.

Your problem is centered around the ABS unit.

have your technician look in that direction.

I have no referrals

I think I have this problem with my 08 Avensis. Mind taking a pic of where it can be found so I can show my mech. Thanks baba

GAZZUZZ:
I will give this quick lecture on fuel consumption and sludge, how they relate.

Newer cars from 2002-date have variable valve timing systems, these systems work with oil flow/pressure to determine timing settings. You will notice most engine covers with inscriptions like VVTI IVTEC, CVVT etc... its all same technology every one just wants a special name tag.

Now here's the snag.

You buy a happy toks car, it's a sprinter.... 0-60 in 10secs ( tongue it's a bloody Corolla) 6months later it stops sprinting, 1 year later it's a log of wood and engine vibrates when ac is turned on, finds it difficult to climb hills and fuel consumption has almost doubled.

Now here's a bit of what happened (Nigerian 20w50 sludge context)

The timing settings are set to a retar.ded position when inactive or without any instruction from the ecm. With sludge in the mix, it is almost always in 1 position. The OCV (oil control valve)has oil strainers that keep dirt out of the device, and once engine develops a sludge issue oil flow stops. Engine will not throw a rod, but timing setting become epileptic, or get stuck in a retar.ded position, making the engine very in efficient.

Pics below show what the OCV oil strainers will look like when engine has mild, sludge, and when it is clean.

So take out time and clean your OCV strainers, you will get better fuel mileage. wink

My Avenis 2008 shows average 16l/100km fuel consumption on the dash. I think it's consuming more fuel than it should. There's no CEO on the dash. What could be wrong?

Avensis 08

1. I feel some drag sometimes while driving.
2. The steering feels hard, but only at certain times e.g when gear is in reverse.
3. Headlights have HID bulb in DIM position. Whenever I switch to DIM from OFF position, the bulb seems to brighten then reduces.

OK sir

1. There are no non-turbo models between 2003 and 2005, it's either 5cyl turbo engine or 6cyl twin turbo(T6). However from 2006 there are non-turbo models (V8 and 6cyl inline 3.2l engines). I hardly run into any XC90 5cyl with turbo issues, so I'll assume thats hardly an issue with them, however I suggest you remove all thoughts of the T6 from your mind as the car is almost always trouble generally

2. By regular wear items I assume you're referring to brake pads, shocks, oil filter etc Those are not too harsh on the pocket too, if you can afford to maintain a jap SUV, then this is child's play for you

3. Currently no, only have Tokunbo for now, perhaps soon

Generally, I'll recommend this car (XC90 5cyl) anytime anyway, it's one of the few SUV 's on the market that's quite affordable and will still serve you well without hurting your pocket so badly. Note I specified on the 5cyl engine if you must buy the year models (2003-2005), if you buy the T6 then you're oyo.

Sorry oo, haven't been following the gist from start, do you already have one or you want to inquire about it?

Inquiry: I'd like to know what to expect before I purchase (2003-2005) models.
1. Are there non-turbo models (I had a terrible experience with VW Passat turbo and so I'm wary of any car with turbo)
2. What are average prices for regular wear items
3. Do you have any Naija used ones in good condition for sale?

Brov, what's your opinion on the XC90.
