grin grin grin, I am doing just fine bro. My statement was just in response to someone who claim to have a first class and yet wasn't selected by NNPC and am trying to let them know it not by first class. From my little experience since after graduation, I have become not so bamboozled when I hear first class especially with the proliferation of universities in Nigeria. Mind you, I didn't have a first class and I got the NNPC offer, I even know certain first class in my state that didn't get. I have also won several scholarship throughout my uni days and currently even on scholarship. In doing so, I competed against the so called first class and was successful. So my people, no be by first class o. grin grin grin

We have both answered this question, diversification is the original idea but corruption is what we are practising.
Bros.. What we should both conclude is that let the best from each state be selected and not telling us federal character should be abolished.

@bolded: for the umpteenth time, the problem of the North are their elites, they are ones pushing the narratives that the south is educationally advantaged over their northern counterpart so as to curry unhealthy favour from FGN leveraging on quota system.

The northern elite will not want the Almajiri to go to school and be exposed, they'd prefer to see them carry their plates and line up in front of their houses for a meal per day and worship them like demi gods. This in turn promotes an unwavering loyalty towards their political cause.

The parents of these kids are too impoverished to influence their fate, the best they can do is to sleep with each other and produce more Almajiris afterall God will handle the rest.

So in essence, my point is that the exposure, environment, circumstances and resources are there in the north to enable them compete favourably with their southern counterpart but the problem is that it is only confined to the four walls of that Alhaji's mansion while those that really need it are queued up outside barely clothed with one big bowl under their armpit.
Bros... I want to ask you, Why are some scholarship and jobs left for women to promote gender balance? Why don't you tell organizers of such scheme to throw it open to both men and woman and pick you that would score 100/100.

I think the word you are looking for is diversification and not quota system because the idea of quota system has been abused by our leaders. They seem to understand it differently.
Again sir, the whole essence of quota system is for diversity and inclusive development. Quota system is abused in Nigeria because of corruption. If the best from a less educationally exposed state is selected, incompetency would be reduce and through interaction with more learned folks, the guys would also pick up the challenge and horn their skills.
However, how to you expect the federal government to improve the education system in the North if it gives all the scholarship to those from the south?

Truth is if 90% of the slots goes to two states in the South west because of their educational advancement like you purported (which I seriously doubt though), it will prompt other regions to put more efforts and stop hoping on quota system to favour them.

If America did not humiliate Japan in the 50s, do you think they would have pushed themselves to be one of the best in technology today, military and otherwise? Please any society that welcomes healthy competition will certainly excel. That's a fact.
Oga... You can only grow when given the opportunity to do so. If the best amongst you are not been giving the opportunity to get further exposure through scholarship or jobs simply because you are deemed not good enough. How then do you develop and encourage other to follow suite?
The point of America and Japan is not applicable here because they are two different independent entities, no sane society and I repeat sane society does not fight for inclusive growth through equity.
If I may ask, why do this advance countries formulate laws and policies to protect the vulnerable and promote greater inclusiveness. Nowadays you see scholarship and opportunities being solely left for women to bridge gender gap in science and technology, you see laws to protect elderly and so on.

To add to my submission, I can tell you that even Private companies practice quota system. Yes they do. For example, a company that has offices in different part of the country would like to have employees from many part of the country to favor their business. But in doing so, they go for the best available from the recruitment screening.

And even this quota system that some of you are clamoring to be removed, I can tell you it won't favor many state even in the south. By the time 90% of the slots in terms of jobs and scholarship keep going to one or two state in the south west because of their educational advancement and the rest are left with little or nothing, nobody will tell you to demand for merit based quota system.

We are know that what we refer to as quota system is actually corruption. I actually believe there are extremely intelligent northerners and corrupt system also does not give them opportunity.
Bro... You are correct, believe me even America and all the developed countries, they ensure everything they do has national spread to promote peace and unity but in doing so, they clamor for the best from each region. You won't realize this until you deeply look into their system

Abroad countries don't do incompetence. The criteria has always been to find a citizen who can do the job before considering a foreigner. This is different from the quota system we practice here.
What you are now talking about doesn't bother on quota system. It is the corruption in our system where people get jobs through connection and not because they are the best in their state. If federal character and merit is been followed judiciously, competent people will be hired. I have seen countless situations where those with poor grades are hired from a state because they have connection while the intelligent once from those state are denied the opportunity. So in that situation, you may tend to think that people from such state are not qualified without knowing that the qualified once were denied the opportunity because they don't know anyone

Merit is neither a Southerner or Northerner. Merit simply says let the best performing individual(s) be given the responsibility do what is required based on test criteria carried out.

I wonder why we have divided everything in this country across ethnic and religious lines. We need to learn to address and respect people based on their competencies and not across divided lines.

Unfortunately, the government have sown seeds of disconnects and divides amongst us, and all we see is region and religion before respect for the individual follows. The crux of the matter is that we have defaced merit for divide, people are favoured cos they are either from this region or based on faith. These factors are why things are not working in the country and corrupt practices continue to strive. Every region has excellent people, let the best compete and have the jobs.

Bros.. When you have a heterogeneous set-up like in Nigeria, common sense should let us know that opportunities should be spread across all regions and the best from each region should be selected for inclusive growth and peace. There is intelligence in every locality. The only difference is the literacy and exposure level and that is why you think you are better than someone from the north. Some even use your oratory prowess to judge your level of intelligence which is wrong.

This is a false analogy pls! The quota system we practice here is about putting round pegs in square holes.
Bros... Whether you like it or not, this advanced countries give opportunities to their own citizens first before considering any outsider. But you don't see it that way because they have manage to create several opportunities far greater than their citizens can take up and because of their desire to keep leading in terms of the technology and innovations, they invite intellectuals from other parts of the world to come in.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Apply For 2019 NNPC Graduate Trainee And Experience Hire by tyakson99: 11:34am On Feb 27, 2020
We all see scholarship where they specify, for Europeans and attach conditions for international candidates. That is to tell you that they will first consider their citizens before looking outside. You now want a heterogeneous country like Nigeria to ditch quota system in government appointment and jobs. What i clamor for is that the best from each state be selected so that those that are educationally behind can also grow.

Even in abroad, they practice quota system. Before they give you any opportunity, they ensure that they didn't find none of their citizens worthy of it even if you out perform them. Secondly even if there is no quota system and the competition is left for those in the south alone, I can assure you that sooner or later there will be clamor for it to be brought back because some few state in the south that are educationally ahead will grab all the opportunities while some will not. So how will that foster unity. The truth is there are intelligent people everywhere, the only difference is that due to our history, the south embraced education earlier than the north due to cultural and religious factors. This is why the literacy level in the south is higher than in the north. So to ensure equity, the best from each region should be given opportunities to grow. You might be surprise that a 2.1 graduate from the north might even be better than you with first class from the south if giving similar exposure. It is something I have seen countless time

I want to Thank God for making me among those that were selected for the G.T role. I am a little confused now cause I just recently started my PhD in Germany and am loving it already. This is because within the short time of starting my research work, I am about to submit two manuscript for publication in reputed journals, plus my research has industry collaboration (oil and gas). The scholarship value is also good. Please at JARUS, XFIRE, PANELYST and those in know of how NNPC operates, isn't it possible for me to accept the offer and still continue my PhD research? My research is very relevant to the oil and gas sector. Please I need your advice and input. Thank you.

I hope you get APL as GT and I pray that 6-9 years down the line , El Rufai becomes president, unbundles NNPC and sells it like second hand clothes in the bazaars of the middle east ( For your information, he was the first to opine that NNPC be sold. Not even Atiku) and as it is typical of investors taking over loss churning entities, jobs are cut, salaries slashed, upfront abolished. You find yourself on the street with 6 years experience as an instrumentation engineer or even lucky enough to keep your job but desire a move because the pecks are gone. An IOC maybe Shell (remember what was quoted as GT salary pa?) puts up an advert looking for an experienced engineer. Remember you are now 36 so would you still be eligible for GT role? You applied for the role and after 12 months of waiting for closure, you are told the mgt is open to internal movement rather than hiring externally! Wao! This is to let you know that no one is immuned to the vagaries of life. Some so called board members even joined as DMs! So what is the hypocrisy all about? Bleep this TAPE nonsense. It is all hogwash. The so called contract staff are even lucky to be there in the first place. In fact in the spirit of TAPE, their contract should be revoked as the jobs were not even advertised in the first place neither does it meet any FCC compliance. Mtcheew
I think we get it wrong when we say NNPC be sold. Every country has and needs a government owned company to manage it joint venture with IOCs. Check out all oil producing countries and you will see this. What needs to the privatized is the refineries not the entire NNPC.

This is really a nice field and am happy for you. You can also share your challenges in terms of research, studies and success with other prospective PHD students reading this thread.
You can share your projects, facilities at your end etc.

Yes, if you have a Personal matter you can PM me. I am here to guide and support PhD students to encourage them to do more research and solve issues.

Best wishes
Thank you Prof. Wip7. I am doing my research in the laboratory of Rheology and processes which has expertise in the analysis of complex fluids for different applications. Since am just starting, I am currently reviewing literature. Here in France, there are good research facilities, and you can write your thesis in English. Most of the professors and researchers can speak English. The only down side is you may find it a bit difficult to communicate outside school without French.

Dear. Prof. Wip7, I am elated to have come across this thread and I am very fascinated with your achievements and expertise. Kudos, I am just starting my PhD in France (university of Grenoble Alpes) on scholarship and I will be researching on the synthesis of nanomaterials for petroleum industry application which I have observed is your area. Specifically, I will be studying the rheological behaviour of drilling muds modified with nanomaterials. My background is in Chemical Engineering. I desire to return to Nigeria after my PhD and I will be glad to have a mentor like you with whom I can collaborate and seek advice. With your permission, I will like to send you a PM for further communication. Thank you

Summary: Discarded chewing gum was utilized as raw material for decontamination of toxic phenolic compounds commonly used in the herbicide industry, and as a fungicide in a paper and pesticides industries. The research focussed on using waste chewing gum. Until now, no studies reported the application of discarded chewing gum for detoxification of wastewater. Chewing gum is composed of a non-digestible polymer and the discarded chewing gum is a notorious environmental waste which is difficult to deal with. In fact, waste chewing gum is a major and increasingly growing social and environmental issue due to its high stickiness and longer years to biodegrade.

Results: The performance of the catalyst-based chewing gum for decontaminating toxic wastewater is high and comparable to other expensive catalysts. Results obtained in this research has just been published in the Chemical Engineering Communications Journal.

I do agree with you but the skills to get are not those of the artisans only.
Except in cases where your career has no self learnable skills.

Say for instance, an electrical engineer need practical skills in wiring and installation and lots more.
Having artisan skills doesn't mean engineers should go be learning farming skills as most universities did to us back then.

I laff at those who think generally that Nigeria education is world class because Nigerians do well outside the country. Of course we have exceptional universities and programs but generally we do so many unnecessary stuff.

You have no idea how much we have to grind and grind and sometimes look stupid before our peers.

More than 70 percent of the first class and second class students we studied together in Europe looked dull and stupid mostly at the first semester of study because we were still learning farming while our mates were designing systems already.

This doesn't mean we don't do well. Because we have no other choice we must excel.

You are right brother. As an engineer, if I have say maybe a skills in Auto repairs and I want to practice independently, you would expect that as a graduate, I would acquire and work with softwares, have good business plan, dress smart, write and speak big grammar (technical and nontechnical) with client while ensuring that the job is done well grin, grin. That is what would differentiate you from the normal artisans we have on the street. Even in abroad, this is how start up and little tech companies are formed o. Before you know it, you may start rendering services to big companies you even dreamt of working for and charging huge fees.

So for me as graduate, having these fundamental skills we classify as for uneducated can be life saving. Although, we know it easier said than done, but sometimes when you look at how many years some people have spent sending CVs and applying for different jobs without success, you will agree that, removing our pride and devoting time to learn this skills might have made some people independent and off the job market for long. Plus learning these skills doesn't stop you from applying for jobs, going for interviews, e.t.c, all we need to do is identity our interest, remove our pride, mingle with people that are not as educated as us and with prayers, the sky may become the starting point.

The electrical engineer in your class that decides to be an "electrician", learns from an artisan electrician for a few months and , starts doing wiring for people by hinself is already an artisan and give him a few years, he'll employ you tongue

So once again I ask "why did we leave artisan jobs for non graduates?"

I quite agree with you bro. I think it high time we graduate drop the notion that we must all work in the corporate setting. We should put our pride away as graduate of engineering or any other course and pick up some practical skills like tailoring, welding, plumbing, auto repairs e.t.c. we can start small and only God knows where he can take us to. I believe if an educated person e.g an engineer, acquires a skill and decides to passionate succeed on it. He will do it better than someone who had little or no education by way of innovation and before you know it, he might even an employer of labor. For me, I have made the decision to acquire this practical skills under an artisan for some months and I will even pay for the training. I have my own ideas and I won't let having a master degree get into my head.

I started a thread on naijahotjobs in 2010 and the thread lasted for 5 years.... it has over 2000000 views...

people actually had hopes 5 years after.....You know what that means......

Let me quickly make some comments about "sources" that give updates here.

1. Some sources are "weak sources".

They are way below the ladder in the organization and their info are based on their personal judgement... they don't know anything concerning the process...

People that depend on them for information also depend on them for some "push". To these people, knowing this weak sources is better than not knowing anyone.

If you fall in this category, you need to be very careful.... expect less.

2. Some candidates reason, pull up facts from past recruitment exercise and Formulate" information as though it is from a source.

They know no one. They do this out of their concerns for the process.,. Doing this pacify their anxiety, when there are no information in the thread.

3. Some have very strong sources who are in the know.....We love to here information from them...but there is a disadvantage here...

These strong sources WILL INFLUENCE THINGS FOR THEIR CANDIDATES....

While you like to hear from their sources, know also that they have a strong advantage over you....

These ones will be the one to praise the system as credible when they get their letters...and while you are in your misery, they vanish into amphitheatre (not thing air) for their medicals.

4. Some have people even in the recruitment committee. They just open the thread, view it and pass. They won't make a single comment because they have been warned.

These ones are already sure of their names on the list....they won't say a word to protect their interest.

These are words from experience.

Bottom line, again,

Caution guys.

Caution.
Oboi.. I can't agree less with you sir, absolutely spot on. This is a wake up call to all us not to over shoot our expectations while we remain hopeful. Yawa dey naija

PhD is common in the oil and gas industry. Almost every oil company I know has at least one PhD holder in its workforce. We used to have 2 in my company despite being a relatively small player in the industry.

Most of them got it on-the-job though (ie after employment). But I have a childhood friend (same pry, sec and uni) that got his PhD before entering the sector as entry level 7 years ago. He didn't have any break in his education and got his PhD at 29. He got job in Shell US few days after his PhD. https://www.linkedin.com/in/oluwafemitaiwo

PhD also makes you competitive in the international oil and gas job market. There was a time I was chasing OPEC jobs (Petroleum Industry Analyst and later Economic Analyst) and I went to LinkedIn to check the profiles of people holding similar jobs in OPEC, almost everyone has PhD, some with 3-4 masters - young folks in their 30s o. Fear catch me, I knew I had no chance! Needless to say, I was not shortlisted despite having 10 years experience and publishing several articles on the industry.

If you love academics, you can choose my friend's path - continue your studies till PhD (preferably abroad) and apply to oil companies there or in Nigeria from abroad. Alternatively, you can get the job with whatever degree you have now and continue to PhD while working (like many people do).

All the best.
Thank you boss

Please at Oga jarus and others who have experience in the O & G ind. How easy would it be especially in Nigeria to enter the oil industry after obtaining a PhD? I have passion for research but don't just want to limit myself to the academics, I would love to have some industry experience before maybe ending up in the academia. My research would be related to a technical aspect of upstream operations. I know abroad, one can join R & D division with PhD, but I don't know how things are in Nigeria if one holds a PhD. Thanks in advance
