THE IGBO HEBREW ANALOGY REVISITED (I):

There are so many Igbo words that have hebrew/ Aramaic roots, some of them have adjectival and verb roots that are clearly hebrew, while some are corrupted versions of hebrew words. The following examples from my book ''Unmasking the hebrews of West Africa'' are illustrative. 1. The hebrew word for stranger (Zar) was evidently derived from aramaic (zur) which means ' to hide'..giving and idea of 'one who distances himsel'(Etymological wordbook of the old testament, Rotring & Butterwerk,1980) .In Igbo language, related words include zere/ zeru (dodge, avoid, refrain from,),zor/zuruo/zoo (hide, go on tip-toe). 2. The herew word for fermented cake (ashishar) corresponds to achicha (bread) in Igbo language. 3. Hebrew word for letter 'o' (ayin) corresponds to Igbo (anya) for round objects including eye (anya), the disc of the sun(anyanwu), the circular fireplace(anyaoku) and keyhole(anya uzo/anya igodo), the most related neighbouring language, Efik/Ibibio has it as (ayen). 4. The hebrew word for bangle (akhas) was derived from the verb 'ekhes' which means to ''shake'' in Igbo language, the beaded bangle is called ''akha''. 5. the hebrew word for the bee (devhorah) tallies with the Igbo word for wasp (ndevu) often short-formed to evu/ebu. It is noteworthy that the type of bee in palestine, the black bee (apis mellificia syriaca) has the same coloration as the west african wasp. 6. the hebrew word for the wall gecko and members of the lizard family is ''anaquah'' evidently derived from the adjective ''anak'' which means ''long necked''. In Igbo language, we have anika/alika for lizard or lizard-like or skinny. 7. In the hebrew language, the word for 'received' is ''natan'' while it is ''nata'' in Igbo , a name like Nathan or nathaniel would mean ''I have recieved from him(God)''. 8. In the hebrew language, the word 'satan'/ 'shatan' means ''opposer'', similarly, in Igbo words like ''saa''(retort, reply , equalize, redeem, repurchase, reverse) are highly indicative. 9. In hebrew, ''ashaq'' means ''defraud'' while ''shaw'' means ''lie/untruth'', similarly in Igbo, 'ashi/asi' means ''lie/untruth'' ' ashiri/asiri' means ''gossip/ rumour' r 10. In hebrew language, the verb ''nebat'' means '' looked at'' while related words in Igbo include ''neba/nebe'' (look at), lebe/lewe (look at, central highland dialects) 11. the hebrew verb ''zacha'' (purify) is related to ''zachaeus'' (pure one) and zarephat(place of purification), in Igbo, ''zachaa'' means to purify/sweep/filter/dredge, related words include oza(filter net), aziza(broom), nzanza(broom/mop), ozara (swept bare/desert)....I can go on with the more than 100 words I have in my collection. Igbo is a corruption of hebrew especially after the original migrant population mixed up with the local proto-kwa speakers.Certain words I used to explain this phenomenon of the hebrew pidgin include ''akala'' and ''alaka''. 12. In the hebrew language, the word for tree is '' allah'' while ''tree branch'' in igbo varies as ''akala'' and ''alaka''. It is linguistically factual that the affix ''aka'' is of proto-kwa origin, giving an idea of ''appendage''(compare ika in yoruba).Removing the affix fro both ''akala'' and ''alaka'' brings out ''ala'' , the hebrew word for tree.More information on these could be obtained from my books "UNMASKING THE HEBREWS OF WEST AFRICA'' and ''PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS OF IGBO NUMEROLOGY''.
