Education / Amazing! University Graduands Set To Flag Off Empowerment Programme In 36 States by UNIBENNEWS: 12:30am On Dec 07, 2018 |
A team of graduating students from across Nigerian Higher institutions named MR VOICEOVER MENTORSHIP INITIATIVE, who recently got an international award recognition as Organization Making A Difference In West Africa based on their humanitarian acts and for continually being a voice to the physically challenged, orphans, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other less privileged members of the society has revealed that the international recognition is a motivation to impact more lives, alleviate poverty and create enabling platforms for job creation for the Nigerian youths who represents 60 percent of the over 200 million Nigerian population, and have proposed to storm the 36 states of the federation with their national youth empowerment programme slated for next year. The founder of the initiative, Emmanuel Oluwasayomi Ahmadu who recently won the Student Brand Of The Year West Africa on West Africa Citizens Awards 2018, during an interview with our correspondent at the award ceremony in Lagos, spoke about their upcoming nationwide youth empowerment programme in 2019 set to hold with support of International agencies, federal goverment of Nigeria, state government and other government parastatals in the 36 states of the country, which is geared towards empowering the Nigerian students and the unemployed youths by creating avenues for talent discovery and development leading to sustainable assets needed to tackle unemployment menace, as well as alleviating poverty among the poorest of the poor in the society. Members of the team lauded the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari for creating jobs and empowering the youths. They pledged their unflinching commitment to the present administration's job creation initiative for youth empowerment through creative skills geared towards creating jobs and making a lasting impact in Nigeria's economy and beyond. Mr. Ahmadu admonished that graduates and youths should put on their thinking caps to see what they can contribute to the country rather than what they will benefit. He also decried the conventional empowerment scheme adopted by representatives in government to train youths and graduates in soap making, tie-dying, shoe making and others. If all graduates and youths are trained in soap making and the likes, who are the graduates that would mount the helm of affairs in the various sectors of the economy in the nearest future? He stressed. The team founder added that representatives in government should embrace the innovative way of empowerment, by empowering the youths and graduates according to their natural talents and abilities, as well training youths and graduates in the skill of their interest and not the skill imposed on them by those in government, as this would boost the economy and would make the youths very productive and become employer of labour, since it's the field of their interest. He stressed that over 85 percent of Nigerian graduates do not practice what they studied because they either do not have space in the labour market to practice what they studied or they are frustrated because their talents and innovative skills are wasting away and this is why most Nigerian youths indulge in social vices to survive and seeking for means to leave the country, so they could go to other countries to contribute their innovative talent to those country's economy, since their skills would be better appreciated in those countries. Speaking further, he emphasized on the need for government to support their innovative skills, thereby creating an enabling platform for more innovative graduates and youth to contribute their problems-solving ideas and expertise to bring substantial growth to the country. Mr Voiceover Mentorship Initiative members consists mostly of graduates and graduating students of higher institutions across Nigeria, whose names are but not limited to Emmanuel Oluwasayomi Ahmadu, Onwuzurike Andrew, Olorunfemi Ayodele, Onu Isaac, Adenola Godswill, Opene Paul, Akomolafe Jesutomi, Adesina Solomon, Osazuwa John, Ariyo Bolanle Jumoke and others are currently working with International agencies, Nigeria government parastatals and well-meaning and kindhearted Nigerians within and outside Nigeria in the realization of the National Youth Empowerment Excercise across the 36 states ahead of 2019. The sustainable impact on youth empowerment programme is themed: Talent Discovery and Development, A Panacea to Solving Unemployment Menace in Nigeria and Africa. The vision of the initiative is to create a template for those in government to understand the dimensions of empowerment and job creation for the unemployed youths and graduates. |

The poem was written during the time when a thief was caught stealing valuables in one of the female hostels in the University; Margaret Ekpo Hostel. Read the poem below. A THIEF IN THE HAREM There's a thief in the harem An uninvited guest in feminine quarters They tremble at his shadow's fleeting passing Heared many virtues he intends plundering Was sighted at the towering walls, Seems there's a wall he intends breaking. Last night Laura saw him, Heared he gifted her an ominous aura. She did shout for help on the green space, Tapping furiously on her pads! General Mufasa offered, Said men braver than simba where on stand by. This thief, Eve's daughters at his mention scamper They tremble at his shadow's fleeting passing Word's that, He plunders lonely deserted buzz machines Laps gets missing from tops at sight He plunders everything in sight, Such is the effect of his fright. There is a thief in the harem He's stealing talking gadgets At his sight laps are missing from tops Last night he was seen jumping in, To get more buzzing machines? Perhaps more laps on tops? He's leaping over great China walls', Apparently for buzz machines and lap on tops. We hope to him there'll be a stopping soon Lest he jumps over and break hymen walls Or leap over and see what's under tops! There is a thief in the harem that needs stopping On sacred walls he may intend a plundering But that's a truth we don't intend finding This breakless terror we must now halt Lest on our feminine quarters he inflicts hurts. ©SamDePoet (pen_wielder) Feb, 2017. 4 Likes

Literature / UNIBEN Graduate Writes World Class Poem by UNIBENNEWS: 1:24am On Sep 03, 2018 |
University of Benin English and Literature fresh graduate, Godwin Henry Osaigbovo also known as Pa Shakespeare recently made history through his world-class literary work entitled AFRICANA. Read it below: Africana "Our forebears broke kolanuts And offered prayers To the benevolent maker, Whose name varied from one tribe to another. They lived in peace and harmony." This was way before The meek white missionaries Made landing on our shores. Africana They condemned our customs and traditions. They said our ways were primitive. So they burnt down our shrines And in its stead, They gave us their three C's. (Christianity, civilization and commerce) Africana These white saviours, in their glowing white robes Baptised our forebears In the name of the Father, his Son and his Holy Spirit. Whilst our fore-elders learnt how to pray, They formed a government, And on our natural Resources they preyed. Africana Albeit their government lynched our forebears. In the church, Both the oppressed and their oppressors Screamed amen. From two conspicuous separated rows; The salvation bringers occupied the front seats The back seats, sanctified for the blacks. And they said their God was impartial. Africana They captured, tortured and shipped Our forebears to the americas. To work their cane plantations, Cotton fields, paddy fields, sugar plants. The unfortunate ones, thrown overboard To swim Frank's ocean. Africana And many centuries after their first landing. The descendants of former slaves, Rose from their slumber and fought for uhuru. This freedom many willingly lay down their lives... And when at last, they declared us independent, Our struggle for survival begun.
