I guess it's cos when u adopt the mind reading method, it's always easy for other Issues to. Filter into the mind and before u know it u are already thinking about several other things thereby disturbing the storage of the initial reading. But wen u read aloud other issues will find it difficult to creep in to the mind. I also guess u can easily learn more with group discussion where u will have to listen to some others thereby not hurting ur voice that much.
