Politics / UK And Nigeria Sign Prisoner-exchange Deal by Vuvuzzela: 11:32pm On Jan 09, 2014
Hi Mr. Moderator, I am not sure which column suits this article best, but I feel it is worth front page here.....smiley

The #UK and #Nigeria have signed an agreement to allow the transfer of #prisoners between the two countries. It means citizens of one who commit crimes in the other will serve sentences in their homeland. My prediction*: watch as crime statistics by Nigerians in the #UK approach number zero in the next crime report. Reason: I would not want to commit a crime in heaven [prison conditions for ordinary and VIP criminals are better in the #UK than in Nigeria] and spend my prison sentence in hell. My opinion/suggestion: Let the evils committed in heaven be settled in heaven, those in hell, in hell. *I see James Ibori walking out of prison soon.

Religion / Short Simple Versus Long "Complex" Prayers. by Vuvuzzela: 2:41pm On Nov 03, 2013
Hi everyone, I hope you are having the best of your weekends and your Sunday in particular. This question just popped in my head this morning while I said my prayers over my meal.

Why we enjoy the sight of today's meeting between the two celestial bodies, namely the sun and the moon, please permit me to digress a little.

Q: Why do most of us, Nigerians and Africans say fast, quick, short, simple prayers over meals before we eat and graduate to strongly worded, long, and more complicated versions when we need a spouse, car, job, etc?

Make una no vex oo. Make we discuss a beg.

Thanks.
Education / UK Universities Embarks On a One-day Strike by Vuvuzzela: 10:46am On Oct 31, 2013
Oh so lecturers go on strike overseas especially in the UK? Could this be ASUU - UK branch?

Universities across the UK face disruption from a one-day walkout by lecturers and support staff who say their pay has failed to keep up with rising living costs.

The University and College Union says it will affect 149 institutions, in a joint action with Unison and Unite.

The unions have rejected a pay offer of 1%, which they say represents a 13% pay cut in real terms since 2009.

University employers predict the strike will cause a "low level of impact".

But the unions say that universities will face the "most widespread disruption for years".

Universities have been warning students there might be some cancellations of classes and that some facilities, such as libraries, could be closed.

Sally Hunt, general secretary of the lecturers' University and College Union (UCU), accused universities of giving high salaries to the most senior staff while refusing to give the majority of staff rises to keep up with rising living costs.

She said: "Our employers had a combined surplus last year of more than £1.1bn yet were prepared to offer a pay rise which covered barely one-third of the increased cost of living."

There was a 35% turnout in the UCU strike ballot, with 62% voting in favour of strike action.

Unison's head of higher education, Jon Richards, accused university managements of "sitting on record surpluses, splashing out on senior management pay but refusing to give a decent wage to the staff who have made UK universities some of the best in the world"

The Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) says it is disappointed at the rejection of the pay offer.

A UCEA spokesman, speaking ahead of the strike, said that less than 5% of the higher education workforce had chosen to vote for strike action.

He said that "salary costs in most HE institutions will actually rise by around 3% this year".

he spokesman said that as well as the 1% increase many staff will also get incremental increases and merit awards.

"These pay increases will be seen as generous by many looking into the sector," he said.

A spokesman for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said: "We are disappointed that the unions have decided in favour of industrial action. Students have the right to expect that their learning will not be disrupted by such action."

Health / Man Allow Doctors End His Life After A Failed Sex Change Operation. by Vuvuzzela: 12:16pm On Oct 02, 2013
A Belgian transsexual has chosen to die by euthanasia after a botched sex change operation to complete his transformation into a man left him a 'monster'.
Nathan Verhelst, 44, died yesterday afternoon after being allowed have his life ended on the grounds of 'unbearable psychological suffering'.
It is understood to be the first time someone in Belgium has chosen euthanasia after a sex-change, and comes soon after it emerged that it is now the cause of nearly one in 50 deaths in the country.

Born a girl named Nancy, his transformation into a man began with hormone therapy in 2009, followed by a mastectomy and finally an operation to construct a penis last year.
But the procedures did not go according to plan.
In the hours before his death he told Belgium's Het Laatse Nieuws: 'I was ready to celebrate my new birth. But when I looked in the mirror, I was disgusted with myself.

'My new breasts did not match my expectations and my new penis had symptoms of rejection. I do not want to be... a monster.'
His family learned of his decision this morning via a farewell letter.
Mr Verhelst's decision comes amid a fierce debate over euthanasia in Belgium, where the number of deaths due to the controversial practice soared by 25 per cent last year.'
Official figures showed the numbers opting to end their lives leap from 1,133 in 2011 to 1,432 in 2012, a figure representing about two per cent of all deaths in the country.
Euthanasia is legal under Belgian law if those making the decision can make their wishes clear and are suffering unbearable pain, according to a doctor's judgement.
The Belgian law differs from that of Switzerland, famous for its Dignitas clinic, where only 'assisted suicide' is permitted.
This means patients must play an active role in the administration of the drug that ends their lives.
Wim Distelmans, a cancer specialist who carried out the euthanasia of Mr Verhelst, is the same doctor who last year ended the lives of deaf twins Marc and Eddy Verbessem, who were both going blind.
The 45-year-olds, from the village of Putte, near the city of Mechelen, had lived together their entire adult lives and could not communicate with the outside world.

Foreign Affairs / Briton Jailed For Having Sex With A Goat by Vuvuzzela: 2:41pm On Sep 13, 2013
First I am not sure which category this story falls into, but Robert Newman has been jailed for having sex with a goat!!!

A man has been jailed for six weeks after admitting having sex with a goat in a barn in Wiltshire.

Robert Newman, 23, launched the night time attack on the animal in a barn in Devizes. The defence said his act was one of "isolation, not depravity".

Anna Humphreys, prosecuting, said Newman carried out the attack in the dark at a barn in Devizes.

Reading a victim impact statement from the goat's female owner, who was not named, Miss Humphreys said:

"My husband is worried about me being on the farm on my own.

"This person has cost us a considerable amount of money because we have had to install security cameras.

"We have also had to pay for vets fees and antibiotics for the injuries sustained by the goat."

North West Wiltshire Magistrates' Court in Chippenham was told the goat required treatment for injuries sustained during the assault.

Newman, of Devizes, initially denied a charge of having sex with a living animal between April 5 and 16 this year.

But he later changed his plea and admitted the attack, contrary to the Sexual Offences Act 2003, on August 19.

Magistrates today jailed Newman for six weeks for the offence after hearing a victim impact statement from the goats' owners.

The attack happened when Newman was the subject of a suspended sentence, which was imposed in August last year after committing a burglary.

Gail Chilcott, chair of the bench, activated the eight week suspended sentence and jailed Newman for six weeks for the goat attack.

Mrs Chilcott told Newman: "Mr Newman you have repeatedly breached all court orders handed to you.

"This is your second breach of your suspended court order.

"We are therefore activating the suspension and you will go to prison for eight weeks.

"For this offence today you will serve six weeks.

"That will be concurrent rather than consecutive because we accept this is an isolated incident."

Defending, Anne Ellery told the court Newman's actions were a "symptom of isolation rather than depravity".

Miss Ellery said: "This is a young man suffering from isolation.

"His understanding of what happened is unknown to him.

"Treatment is certainly something that he will need to seek.

"His delay in admitting the behaviour is because of the embarrassment and shame that went with it."

The court heard Newman has previous convictions, including two for house burglary.

"This is an offence which is the first of its kind," Miss Ellery said. "It is isolated and has not happened before."

Miss Ellery read a statement from Newman to the court.

It said: "I don't want to be this bad person anymore, I just want to get on with my life and do good.

"I want to stand before you and say I am sorry and I just want to be back with my family."

Newman, wearing a black coat and shirt, remained emotionless as he was led to the cells.

Romance / Two Kenyan Men In 'wife-sharing' Deal by Vuvuzzela: 4:12pm On Aug 26, 2013
Two Kenyan men have signed an agreement to "marry" the same woman, reports say.

The woman had been having affairs with both men for more than four years and apparently refused to choose between them.

The agreement sets out a rota for Sylvester Mwendwa and Elijah Kimani to stay in her house and states they will both help raise any children she bears.

Lawyers said their "marriage" would be legally recognised if they could prove polyandry was part of their custom.
'Jealousy'

Mr Mwendwa and Mr Kimani drafted the agreement after realising they had both been having an affair with the woman in Mombasa County for more than four years, the local Daily Nation newspaper reports.

Community policing officer Adhalah Abdulrahman persuaded the two men to marry the woman after he saw them fighting over her, it reports.

"We have agreed that from today we will not threaten or have jealous feelings because of our wife, who says she's not ready to let go of any of us," the agreement says, Kenya's NTV station reports.

"Each one will respect the day set aside for him. We agree to love each other and live peacefully. No-one has forced us to make this agreement," it adds.
Mr Mwenda said her parents had given their blessing, while he is planning to pay the bride price.

The woman, a widow with two children, did not want to be named.

Kenyan family lawyer Judy Thongori told the Daily Nation that the law does not explicitly forbid polyandry - a woman having more than one husband.

"The laws we have do not talk about it but for such a union to be recognised in Kenya, it has to be either under the statutory law or as customary marriage. The question we should ask now is whether these people come from communities that have been practising polyandry," she is quoted as saying.

Polygamous marriages often take place in Kenya, but wife-sharing is unheard of, correspondents say.

Health / 96-stone Man: Saudi King Orders Airlift by Vuvuzzela: 5:19pm On Aug 20, 2013
A Saudi man weighing 96st (610kg) has been airlifted to hospital after being unable to leave his bedroom for two-and-a-half years.
Khalid Mohsin Shaeri, 20, was flown from the southern city of Jazan to a hospital in Riyadh on King Abdullah's orders.
The "rescue" plan had to wait for six months until a specially-made bed was delivered from the US.
Saudi Arabia's health ministry worked with civil defence and the Saudi Red Cross to organise his evacuation after part of his home was demolished so he could be brought down from the second floor.
A forklift truck was used to carry Mr Shaeri to an ambulance and on to a waiting aircraft.
Minister of Health Dr Abdullah al Rabeeah called the king's efforts a "humanitarian gesture".
Mr Shaeri, who weighs the same as two baby elephants or eight average-sized men, was reported to have a brother and sister who are also overweight, but able to walk.
Local media said the Saudi health ministry had dealt with other morbidly obese patients this year, including two siblings who weighed 47st (298kg) and 55st (349kg).
