As the residents of Ajah, Lekki , Victoria Island and Ikoyi in Lagos State continue to count their losses following the Saturday flooding of the areas, the state government has said it is building a retention pond to assist in containing flooding in the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare, stated this on Monday .
Adejare said a retention pond was currently being built at the Sangotedo area of Lagos State as a form of rainfall harvesting to serve as a reservoir for storm water at the peak of the rainy season for onward release into the Okota River after the rains subsided .
Adejare said, “ This retention pond is essential as Lagos in recent times has been experiencing flash flooding due to the rise in the sea level and persistent rainfall .
“ Flooding all over the world is rated as the second biggest natural disasters. We will find a lasting solution to the issue of flooding in Lagos .
“ Lagos has experienced 475 mm of rainfall in the last seven days; the rain of July 8, which was 178 mm was more than six months of rainfall in the city of California , USA. ”
He further stated that the government had resolved to be more stringent in the campaign against dumping of refuse in canals and drains and was ready to enforce physical planning laws.
He attributed the Saturday flooding to the high tide of the lagoon, persistent rainfall and high volume of storm water , and consequent back flow from the lagoon to the drains instead of the drains discharge into the lagoon.
Adejare stated that the retention pond was part of the state government’ s response to flooding , in addition to the existence of about 202 primary channels that served as storage and drains for storm water .
According to findings by our correspondents, owners of houses and property affected by the flooding are preparing documents to file huge claims against their insurance companies.
This, it was learnt , would cost the insurance sector huge losses arising from payment of record claims.
Our correspondent gathered that most of the houses and possessions in the highbrow areas of Lekki , Victoria Island and Ikoyi had been insured by their owners , who are mostly high net -worth individuals .
Economic and financial analysts could not put a figure to the amount in claims the insurance sectors would likely face from the unfortunate development when contacted by our correspondents on Monday .
They, however, said the impact would be felt significantly by the insurance sector .
Remarking on the likely impact of the development on the insurance sector , the Managing Director , Cowry Asset Management Limited, Mr. Johnson Chukwu , said, “ Houses in Victoria Island , Lekki , Ikoyi have household insurance cover . Household insurance is one of the compulsory insurance policies . The insurance sector will record very huge claims. I cannot put a figure now because it will be too early to do that , but certainly it will be huge .”
Analysts said the flood did not hamper banking and business operations because it happened over the weekend.
They, however, said a few companies, whose business premises were affected , might face little disruptions .
On Twitter , Nigerians are still recounting their losses , as a driver claimed that he spent about N 1m on the repairs of his car damaged by the flood .

Two persons including a Nigerian national were caught with cocaine in Hyderabad, India on Saturday, July 8th. The Nigerian identified as Bernard Wilson, 26, and a 23-year-old Mohd Zeeshan, a hotel manager were arrested by Telangana's excise officials for allegedly peddling 12 gm of cocaine, each gram costing over Rs 10,000, near two prominent star hotels in Begumpet and Banjara Hill.
The duo would get in touch with buyers through social media and sold the drug that set their clients back Rs. 10,000-15,000 for a gram.
The arrests come soon after the crackdown in Hyderabad on a network peddling psychotropic substance LSD to school and college students.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday , Ajay Rao, joint Commissioner in Excise Enforcement Department said Ali came in contact with Williams at a club in Jubilee Hills after which he started selling cocaine through some persons known to him for the last six months.
Williams was procuring the contraband from Kenneth, another Nigerian national, who is absconding, via courier. He would then hand it over to Ali. Williams was staying in the city on an expired passport and was arrested in 2016 along with three others on similar charges, Rao added.
Ajay Rao says the clients in this case are possibly party-goers and those with deep pockets. The lucrative business model involves a multilevel marketing network, with incentives for peddlers who bring more clients.
"It is an organised chain system. Those in the network lure new customers by offering either a dose of drug for free or a discount. It is the classic multilevel marketing model. When their prey gets addicted but can't afford to buy another dose, he tries to lure someone else who can pay.''
The two suspects were using coded language on popular messaging service WhatsApp to communicate about their drug deals, officials have found.
The recurrence of various coded words, including ‘Chik 1’ and ‘Chik 2’, found frequently in the WhatsApp chats of Bernard Wilson and Mohammed Zeeshan Ali, STF officials said, adding that even the addresses to which they were supposed to deliver the stuff appeared to be written in coded language.
STF personnel made efforts to collect more information from Williams but his slang and broken English made it difficult for them to decipher what he was saying, they said.
"He at first claimed that he did not know anything. But gradually, he revealed that it was another Nigerian national, Kenneth, who was supplying him cocaine by courier,” an official said.
"We have seized four mobile phones from the possession of Ali and Williams. Once we analyse the call data, we will be able to find out the role of other persons," Rao said.
Another official said efforts were on to examine the Facebook accounts of both Ali and Williams.
“We might find out the list of clients from WhatsApp messages and details on Facebook,” he said.
The STF would also probe whether Ali sold the contraband to guests at the events he organised.
"As and when we get information, we will conduct raids and nab those involved in the supply of drugs," the official said.

Footage has emerged of a man attempting to grab a tiger shark by the tail – before being bitten by the creature. Two men were caught on camera trying to rescue the small shark after it got hooked on a fishing line near a pier in North Carolina, US.
The clip shows one of the men trying to grab hold of its tail but failing and the animal then tries to swim a short distance away.
Blood can be seen gushing into the ocean as the man is bitten on the hand when he tries to reach for it once more.
He is then seen making his way to the shore, clutching his wounded hand.
The shark, which was about 4-foot long, was later pulled nearer the shore at Wrightsville Beach.
The hook was removed before it was released back into the ocean, local TV station WWAY reported.

A 19-year-old Nigerian girl, Cynthia Anurika Uzochukwu, who hoped to become a doctor after scoring 233 in JAMB, reportedly died on June 15th, and according to some of her friends who wrote tributes to her on social media, she suffered from Malaria and Typhoid before her death.

A suspected female kidnapper was burnt to death in Ikorodu earlier Tuesday. According to reports, a man selling meat and an Aboki selling fruits at Allinson Junction, close to United High School, Ikorodu raised alarm after the 40-year-old woman who was acting like a mad person suddenly went to a corner to receive a phone call. They approached her for questioning, and when she couldn't tell them who she was, they handed her over to the Local Vigilante Office. On getting there, she was interrogated by the Deputy Chairman of the vigilante group. There they found on her an iPhone 7, a juju ring, and a list that contains descriptions of children (age range, prices and height) in her bag.
She confessed that she came from Isolo, Lagos, that she didn't come alone and that her other accomplice fled immediately she was caught. The Vigilantes called the police to take the suspect away, but before the police arrived, a mob that had already gathered were calling for her head. They were demanding for Jungle Justice to be carried out on her.
As the Vigilantes couldn't handle the crowd, they took it upon themselves to take her to the police station. Unfortunately, the crowd were too many for them to control.
She was later beaten and burnt to death with her bag containing the list and juju ring.

North Korea test-fired another ballistic missile, Tuesday morning from a site in North Korea’s North Phyongan province, according to U.S. Pacific Command, defying international pressure. The launch was made, the missile was tracked for 37 minutes and landed in the Sea of Japan. No fewer than 14 people have died after an IS suicide bomber disguised in female clothing approached a camp for displaced persons in western Anbar, Iraq and detonated a bomb on Sunday evening. A majority of the victims were women and children.
The bomber carried out the attack at Kilo 60 camp, near the town of al-Wafa. Among those who died in the attack were two policemen.
IS released a statement soon after claiming responsibility for the attack and claimed it had targeted an Iraqi army position.
Provincial Councillor Taha Abdul Ghani told the Associated Press this morning that the bomber approached the site wearing a woman's robe that covered his head and body. A sharp-eyed police colonel felt there was something suspicious about the figure covered in female clothing so he walked up to the attacker and embraced him in an attempt to shield others from the blast. The explosives vest detonated almost immediately killing the hero police colonel and others.
The UN Humanitarian Co-ordinator for Iraq, Lise Grande, condemned the attack and said most of the victims had been people who fled there for safety.
She said in a statement: "This is terrible. The people who were attacked had fled to Kilo 60 for their safety. Many have travelled huge distances seeking help."

A suspected member of notorious cult group, Badoo, was lynched and burnt to death by a mob at Idera community in Odogunyan in Ikorodu, Lagos state yesterday July 2nd. According to reports, when the man was caught and interrogated, he lied he was a teacher at a private school in the area. When he was taken to the school, it was discovered he was not a worker there.
He also said he worked at a firm in the area which turned out to be false. While he was been interrogated, a woman stepped out, claiming she heard him and five others planning to carry out an attack in the area.
The residents of the area descended on him, beat him up, killed him and then set him on fire.
They are now searching for the remaining five persons.

The wife of the Principal of Gbanrainowei Grammar School, Okolobiri, Bayelsa State, Mr. slowpoke Pereowei, Mrs Edith Pereowei, has been abducted by unknown gunmen at their residence in Azikoro Village, Yenagoa local government area of the state.


According to reports, the 12-man gang stormed the home of the principal, gaining access by smashing the building window. They first gained access into the room of Mrs Pereowei's younger brother, whom they held at gunpoint and used to lure the couple out of their room.

The gunmen shot their victim on the leg before whisking her away.


Her family is yet to receive any word from her abductors.


Meanwhile the state police command says it is working towards the safe return of the victim.

The notorious Badoo group have struck again in Idioro area of Ogijo, Ikorodu area of Lagos state – killing a husband and his wife on their matrimonial bed.


The couple were reportedly found dead on their matrimonial bed with a grinding stone was found on them. According to reports, the couple known as “Baba and Mama Seun”, both residents of Ekundayo, ESCOBA, lived in an uncompleted building .


The couple’s assailants were suspected to have gained entrance through one of the open windows though the net was neatly removed and later fixed after the operation.

A senior police officer, who arrested kidnap kingpin, Chukwudi Onuamadike, aka Evans, and members of his gang in 2006, shares the encounter with Gbenga Adeniji


How did you meet Evans?


There was a time in 2006 that a gang of robbers attacked a commercial bank in Lagos and went somewhere around the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, to share the loot.
While sharing the loot, the robbers had a disagreement and shot one another. Seven members of the gang died instantly. The then Divisional Police Officer of Iponri Police Station, Yahaya Bello, now a deputy commissioner of police, said there was a serious incident involving some persons who shot at one another. He said about three of them had been arrested.
