Nairaland / General / Does Emirates Allow A Free Checked Bag? by WilliamCavil: 7:20pm On Jan 02
Emirates offers a sufficient baggage allowance for the passengers in order to make sure that everyone on board carries all of his/her essentials along. Though there are different baggage allowances of Emirates for different ticket types, fare classes, travel routes and seasonality – you can have peace of mind to get a generous one. If you require more baggage allowance on your ticket, you can easily purchase it later from the Emirates Manage My Booking online platform or buy it at the check-in counter during the boarding process.
Emirates offers cabin baggage allowance standardized for all the travel classes. Whether you are booking your seat in economy class, premium economy class, business class or first class; a passenger is allowed to carry up to 7kg of carry-on luggage along in a bag that is not more than 55 cm x 38 cm x 22 cm for its (length x width x height).
For the checked baggage allowance, Emirates offers two types of policies;
• Weight concept rule.
• Piece concept rule
By Weight concept rule.
In the weight concept rule for your checked baggage allowance, your total baggage allowance is dependent upon the total weight you can carry with your ticket type regardless of the number of bags. This allowance is usually for all of the routes of the Emirates except for the Americas and Africa.
The sum of the total dimensions of your checked bags under the weight concept rule is 300 cm (or 118 inches) maximum i.e. length + width + height (per bag). Additionally, one bag should not weigh more than 32 kg.
1. Economy Class travellers get a free checked baggage allowance from 20kg (44 lbs) to 35kg (77 lbs) i.e. varying based on the route, fare class, or ticket type.
2. Premium Economy class passengers have a checked baggage allowance of 35 kg maximum.
3. Business Class ticket holders can carry up to 40kg (88 lbs) of checked baggage with their tickets.
4. First-class passengers typically enjoy the highest checked baggage allowance from the airline i.e. up to 50kg (or 110 lbs).
By piece concept rule.
With the piece concept rule, a passenger’s baggage allowance depends upon the number of bags one can carry (each having its specific dimensions and weight limit as per your fare class and ticket type). So, the total weight of your checked baggage becomes irrelevant.
The piece concept rule applies to all of the routes of Emirates that operate in the Americas and Africa. Additionally, the sum of the total dimensions i.e. (length + width + height) of each bag under the piece concept rule of Emirates must not exceed the 150 cm (or 59 inches) limit.
1. Economy Class travellers get only one piece weighing up to 23 kg for the ‘Special fare’ tickets while two pieces up to 23 kg each for ‘Saver fare, Flex fare, and Flex Plus fare’.
2. Premium Economy class travellers have a free checked baggage allowance of up to 2 pieces of 23 kg each maximum.
3. Business Class passengers can carry 2 bags for their checked baggage, each having a maximum weight of 32 kg.
4. First-class ticket holders also get two pieces up to 32 kg each for their checked baggage allowance by piece concept rule.
Excess checked baggage.
If your checked baggage allowance exceeds the free limit, it comes under the oversized (exceeding the specified dimensions) or overweight (exceeding the specified weight limit) baggage policy of Emirates. Therefore, it is subject to some conditions.
• There is a fee associated with excess checked baggage that you need to pay to carry it. Alternatively, you have to compromise and remove the extra weight from your checked baggage.
• The fee varies depending on your fare class, type of ticket, travel route, aircraft configuration, as well as seasonality.
• The excess baggage fee can be per kilogram or per piece (as per the airline’s policies).
• The checked baggage which is only 1-2 kg overweight is usually permitted by the airline if there’s sufficient availability. On the other hand, the peak travel time brings the highest excess baggage fee even for 1 kg of additional weight.
• For economical rates, pre-purchase your extra baggage allowance from the airline’s online portal. On the other hand, buying it at the airport during the check-in process is usually expensive.

So, that’s how many free checked bags you can get for your fare class with the Emirates baggage allowance policy.
Nairaland / General / How Do Flight Attendants Deal With Ear Pressure? by WilliamCavil: 6:21pm On Nov 07, 2023
When in flight, changing altitudes and the pressurized aircraft cabin – both add to causing ear discomfort for the people on board. No matter if you fly with the premium travel services of Qatar Airways flights, or choose a buglet airline, ear pain happens. Sometimes it can be more while at other times it can be minimal depending upon the aircraft, i.e., type, configuration, flight route as well and seating.

So, how do flight attendants deal with ear pressure? Here’s everything you need to know.

Yawning and Swallowing:
Flight attendants actively engage themselves in actions like yawning, swallowing, or gently moving their jaw during the flight as these activities help open the Eustachian tubes. Therefore, equalizing air pressure on either side of the eardrum and easing the discomfort.

Chewing Gum or Candies:
You’ll also often see flight attendants chewing gum or sucking on candies, especially during take-off and landing. This is encouraged because frequent swallowing assists in equalizing ear pressure and, thus, minimizes ear pain when caused by changes in atmospheric pressure.

Pressure Equalization Devices:
Some flight attendants may also use specialized earplugs or devices designed to regulate ear pressure. These products help manage pressure changes within the ear, promoting comfort during altitude fluctuations.

Hydration:
Flight attendants know the importance of hydration in flight and that’s why they emphasize the same for the passengers on board. Consuming sufficient water helps prevent dehydration in your body and keeps your mucus membrane moist. Therefore, it can lessen the ear discomfort.

Nasal Sprays or Decongestants:
Sometimes nasal sprays or decongestants can also be used by flight attendants before a flight. It helps in;

• Manage sinus congestion.
• Encourage the equalization of ear pressure.

Professional Training:
Flight attendants receive intensive professional training in which managing ear discomfort during flights remains a prominent one. The training covers a range of in-flight challenges, such as alleviating ear pressure discomfort and also enabling them to assist passengers in this regard.

Nasal Inhalation Techniques:
Specific nasal inhalation methods, such as gently inhaling and exhaling the air while pinching the nostrils closed and then swallowing aid in equalizing ear pressure and reducing discomfort.

Valsalva Maneuver:
Flight attendants might employ the Valsalva manoeuvre to manage ear pain. It is a technique that involves gently pinching the nostrils closed and attempting to exhale gently (not forcefully as it can be damaging to your ear membrane) with a closed mouth.

Modified Valsalva:
Though a similar technique to the Valsalva maneuver, modified Valsalva involves a gentler application i.e., pinching the nostrils closed and swallowing several times to gradually regulate air pressure.

Ear Discomfort Awareness:
Flight attendants, in addition to helping the passengers minimise ear pain in flight with different tips and techniques, continuously monitor their ear discomfort as well to remain empathetic. By being aware of their own experiences, they not only better understand the passenger's needs but also assist every single one of them as per their special medical requirements.

Professional Support:
Flight attendants get their ear check-ups regularly to alleviate any persistent ear discomfort or underlying ear conditions.
So, that’s how flight attendants deal with ear pressure on board. If you want to efficiently minimize this problem for you as well, go to Qatar Airways manage my booking platform and get expert advice.
