Politics / No Voter's Card, No Salary In Abia State by wobastine: 8:19am On Jan 22, 2011
Ostensibly to ensure that all eligible voters register in the ongoing registration exercise, the Abia State government has declared today as work-free day for all its civil servants. In the same vein, all markets in the state would also not open for business next Tuesday to allow traders to register.

The state commissioner of information and strategy, A.C.B. Agbazuere, who disclosed this during the post executive council meeting press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, also said any public servant that did not register for a voters card would not be paid their January 2011 salary.

"The public holiday was part of government's mobilisation strategy to ensure that everybody was given the opportunity to register without having an excuse," Mr. Agbazuere said.

A Federal High Court in Ibadan, has fixed February 9, for the hearing of the motion on notice to determine whether or not the police deserve an extension of time in the case of a four-year-old boy, Master David Olawale, The toddler had dragged the Inspector-General of Police to court over the alleged killing of his father, Mr. Babalola Olawale.

In a suit before Justice Shakarho, the only surviving child of the 36-year-old motor dealer is asking the court to declare the shooting and killing of her father as a gross violation of Sections 33(1) and 34 of the 1999 Constitution.

The toddler is also demanding N100m damages for the alleged wrongful killing.

The toddler’s father was allegedly shot dead on July 1, 2010 in Ibadan by a police inspector attached to the Crime Investigations Department of the Ogun State Police Command.

Politics / My Concern About Lagos And Tinubu Politics - Ayekoto by wobastine: 7:19am On Jan 14, 2011
A Yoruba philosophical saying that, " When there is still relative peace in a family, the bastards of such home have not grown-up. " interpreted;

" Bi ile kan ba si nn'toro, a je pe omo-ale be, ko iti da'gba."

This statement became relevant here considering what is happening in the political scenes of Lagos State, a State known for her excellence in everything and anything. A state where anything goes. A replica state of Kwara nature.

There is a believe, that in Lagos, anything is possible, affordable and acquirable. A community of people who for the love of money and other material gains could trade their birth rights for " aso-ebi", " atenuje " and " owan-be " party.

Politics / No More Mobile Police For Banks by wobastine: 7:12am On Jan 14, 2011
Following the development, Chief Security Officers of all banks in the country on Wednesday held a four-hour closed door meeting with the DIG Operations at the Force Headquarters to fashion out ways on how the banks could provide their own alternative security.

Though the outcome of the meeting was not made public, but an inside source said the banks were not disposed to the new arrangement, and were still pleading  with the Inspector General of Police to rescind the decision as such directive will likely alter their operations and also jeopardize the security of customers.

Politics / Lekki Epe Expressway Toll Suit - Court Hearing Jan 20 by wobastine: 6:23am On Jan 12, 2011
At the resumed hearing of the case before Justice Bolaji Candide-Johnson, lawyer to LCC, Mr Tunde Fagbohunlu (SAN), told the court that the claimant took part in a protest against the toll collection on December 4, 2010 as reported in a national newspaper.
He also informed the court that, Adegboruwa, in the interview granted to journalists, said the collection of tolls was nothing but political propaganda for the impending elections.

He added, “It is not right for the litigant having submitted the matter to court to be part of any demonstration and make inflammatory remarks against the Lagos State Government.”

He urged the court to hear the substantive application because the issue of toll collection had been overtaken by the Lagos State Government’s directive postponing the collection till further notice.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Ryan Babel Faces Sanction After Photoshop Of Refree In Man U Jersey by wobastine: 8:33pm On Jan 09, 2011
The Football Association has opened an investigation after Liverpool winger Ryan Babel posted a digitally altered picture on Twitter of referee Howard Webb wearing a Manchester United shirt and said his performance at Old Trafford was "a joke".

Webb awarded a penalty against Liverpool and later sent off its captain Steven Gerrard as Manchester United won 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Before linking to the image of Webb, Babel wrote on Twitter: "And they call him one of the best referees. That's a joke."

The FA have since said they " will definitely look into this matter." Babel could possibly be charged with improper conduct.

Celebrities / $200m Promised By Goodluck To The Entertainment Industry - Not Fulfilled by wobastine: 9:50am On Jan 08, 2011
But what may pass for the biggest gift in the year still remains a promise – a promise worth being waited for, anyway. That is the one made by President Goodluck Jonathan at the Silverbird Organisation’s 30th anniversary celebration in Lagos. In a declaration that pleasantly shocked many practitioners, Jonathan said the Federal Government would power the entertainment industry with $200m.

First, the film makers, musicians, producers, actors and others present burst into a wild jubilation. But minutes after, they began to doubt if they heard the president right. Did he mean to say N200m? When Jonathan, however, cleared the air and stressed that government would intervene with $200m, the stakeholders did not know whether to continue to dance or go into a prayer session. The largesse seemed so huge that it began to look like a piece of drama.

Politics / Jonathan Proposes To Spend N1.57m On Food Daily In 2011 by wobastine: 3:59am On Jan 04, 2011
Emerging details of this year’s budget proposals indicate that the Presidency has proposed to spend N574m on food in 2011. When this total is spread over the 365 days in 2011, the average amount that the Presidency will spend on food per day is a little over N1.57m.

Attached Image: President-Goodluck-Jonathan.jpg

The N574m is N168.7m more than the N405.3m spent by the same office on ‘food stuff supplies’ in 2010. However, the 2010 figure is exclusive of the sum expended on foods eaten during summits. A separate sub-head for “meals/entertainment” for summits held at the State House last year totalled N73m.

It (N574m) is also part of the N13.9bn that will be used to fund sub-heads and the overhead cost of the State House or Presidential Villa.

Charley Boy is fantastic – my Popsy .He’s doing great with his wife and kids. His son is back. The first question he asked me was, what the hell is going on with you and my father? I said, ‘I don’t understand’. But over all CB is fine

Abeokuta—A 25-year-old National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, member, Miss Bere Basiri, was yesterday arraigned before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly abandoning her 14-day-old baby.

Police Prosecutor, Mr. Paul Etusi, had told the court that the accused person, who is doing her Primary Assignment with Osun Government, delivered the baby in Abeokuta.

Etusi said that Basiri abandoned the child with one Funmilayo Fakorede on December 16, in Asero Estate Area of Abeokuta.

Politics / Fg To Sell Power Stations Because Operating Manuals Are Written In Chinese by wobastine: 8:17am On Dec 30, 2010
The Federal Government is holding discussions with a consortium comprising Nigerian and Chinese companies, with a view to selling the Olorunsogo and Omotosho power stations under a buyout deal.

Sources close to the deal told our correspondent on Wednesday that the government settled for this option because it was becoming difficult for workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria to successfully run the plants.

“The plants have been shut down several times because the operating manuals of the stations are written in Chinese and the PHCN workers have been encountering difficulties in running the plants. So, the government thinks it will be better to sell them to the Chinese contractors, who installed the machines,” the top government source said.

Politics / Icpc Probes Suspended Federal Housing Authority Md Over 400m Fraud by wobastine: 6:42am On Dec 27, 2010
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related offences Commission has commenced the investigation of the suspended Managing Director of Federal Housing Authority, Mr. Terver Gemade, over the alleged transfer of N400m belonging to the agency.

The investigation was sequel to a petition filed by an NGO, Transparency and Anti-corruption Vanguard, and signed by its Executive Director, Obioma Ugochukwu. The group alleged in the petition that it uncovered massive fraud at the FHA, from which it claimed that Gemade benefitted.

It said, “But we have no faith in the so-called internal investigation. Our investigations have revealed all manner of cover-ups are being done by his cronies at the FHA and that is why we implore you to act expeditiously.”

The organisation alleged that Gemade, ‘acting alone and for his personal benefit,’ unilaterally transferred the said sum from an escrow account to the Prince and Princess Project account without first obtaining the approval of the Executive Management Committee or the FHA Board of Directors as required by law.

The organisation added that Gemade went further to transfer the sum of N140m from the escrow account to Tangent Nigeria Limited’s project account without the approval of the EMC or the board.

The petition urged the ICPC to obtain details of the ‘staggered payments’ into Gemade’s bank account from March 2010 as proof of its allegations. The group said it was the alleged transactions that prompted the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Nduese Essien, to suspend Gemade.

It also said Gemade was trying to use his contacts in the Presidency to overturn his suspension while using his suspected cronies at the FHA to cover-up the internal investigation.

When contacted on the development, the spokesman of the ICPC, Mr. Mike Sowe, confirmed the development but refused to give details.

“Yes, we have received a petition on him (Gemade) and we are working on it; we have commenced an investigation on him but I won’t give details for now,” Sowe said.

Politics / Investigation Revealed That House Of Representative Is Broke by wobastine: 6:07am On Dec 27, 2010
The House of Representatives may be broke as findings indicated on Sunday that it had become difficult for the House to render services, including the funding of committee operations.

The leadership of the House has, however, described claims that it is battling a financial crisis as “impossible.”

Among the worst-hit by the development are the 11 reinstated members of the House who were suspended on June 22.

Investigations showed that seven of the reinstated lawmakers had not been paid their salaries and allowances, which accrued since June when they were suspended, allegedly owing to lack of funds.

Five of the seven, Mr. Dino Melaye, Mr. Solomon Awhinawhin, Mr. Anas Adamu, Mr. Bitus Kaze and Mr. Independence Ogunewe, had on Thursday, filed contempt charges against the leadership of the House for failing to pay their salaries and allowances.

However, the leadership was warned about how to source funds to offset the salaries and allowances.

Each member of the House officially takes home N28m every three months as “quarterly allowance”, excluding the monthly salary of around N1m.

This implies that each lawmaker receives at least N10m every month (salary and allowances).

Findings indicated that for the two quarters (six months) that the 11 lawmakers were on suspension, their accrued salaries and allowances stand at N660m.

It was gathered that owing to the financial crisis, only four of the 11 lawmakers reportedly received part payment of their salaries and allowances before the House proceeded on Christmas break on December 21.

Sources in the bureaucracy of the National Assembly claimed that Mr. Ehiohie West-Idahosa and Mr. Gbenga Onigbogi were paid about N25m each.

Two others, Mr. Austin Nwachukwu and Mr. Gbenga Oduwaiye, reportedly received about N16m each, leaving huge balances yet to be paid.

The four did not challenge their suspension in court but preferred to seek pardon by apologising to the House over their roles in the event that led to June 22 free-for-all on the floor of the House.

It was learnt that the five lawmakers led by Melaye and two others — Ms. Doris Uboh and Kayode Amusan — were yet to be paid as at Friday.

One of the sources in the National Assembly bureaucracy attributed the financial crisis in the House to the alleged decision of lawmakers to “collapse and share” all the funds budgeted for the running of the House in 2010 across board.

The source, who is a senior management official, confided in our correspondent in Abuja that, “The truth is that there is not enough money in the accounts of the House.”

He said, “They (lawmakers) have drawn and spent nearly all their votes and that is why they are having problems with those members suspended who were reinstated by the court.

“Trouble is brewing there (at the House) because even if they collapsed the accounts, they ought to have known that they must set aside the salaries and allowances of the suspended lawmakers.

“Except if they had concluded that the suspension was indefinite and they did not envisage the lawmakers bouncing back through the court.

“I strongly feel that their inability to honour the court decision is because there is no money to clear the outstanding salaries and allowances.”

But the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Labaran Dambatta, denied that the House was broke

Dambatta, who told our correspondent that he had been paid his December salary, added that it was impossible for anybody to say that there was no money in the accounts of the House.

“How can the accounts be in the red? It is not possible”, he claimed.

When asked why the reinstated lawmakers had not been paid their salaries and allowances, Dambatta replied, “I would not know really. It is an individual thing.”

According to him, that the majority of lawmakers has been paid and some excluded does not mean that the House has no money.

“Even if two of you operate accounts in the same bank, one person may be paid and another one may not be paid; it has to do with the individual”, he added.

The spokesman for the House, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh, is out of the country, while several calls to the mobile telephone of the Majority Leader, Mr. Tunde Akogun, were not answered.

When contacted on Sunday, Melaye confirmed that the reinstated lawmakers had not been paid their salaries and allowances.

“That is why we went to court; if we have been paid, why did we go to court?” he asked.
