Ostensibly to ensure that all eligible voters register in the ongoing registration exercise, the Abia State government has declared today as work-free day for all its civil servants. In the same vein, all markets in the state would also not open for business next Tuesday to allow traders to register.

The state commissioner of information and strategy, A.C.B. Agbazuere, who disclosed this during the post executive council meeting press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, also said any public servant that did not register for a voters card would not be paid their January 2011 salary.

"The public holiday was part of government's mobilisation strategy to ensure that everybody was given the opportunity to register without having an excuse," Mr. Agbazuere said.

A Federal High Court in Ibadan, has fixed February 9, for the hearing of the motion on notice to determine whether or not the police deserve an extension of time in the case of a four-year-old boy, Master David Olawale, The toddler had dragged the Inspector-General of Police to court over the alleged killing of his father, Mr. Babalola Olawale.

In a suit before Justice Shakarho, the only surviving child of the 36-year-old motor dealer is asking the court to declare the shooting and killing of her father as a gross violation of Sections 33(1) and 34 of the 1999 Constitution.

The toddler is also demanding N100m damages for the alleged wrongful killing.

The toddler’s father was allegedly shot dead on July 1, 2010 in Ibadan by a police inspector attached to the Crime Investigations Department of the Ogun State Police Command.

Olawale was said to have been shot dead during an argument that ensued between him and policemen who brought an armed robbery suspect to effect the deceased’s arrest over an allegation of receiving stolen vehicles.

The suspected kidnappers of Dr. Memfin Ekpo, the husband of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of uyo, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, have demanded a N100m ranson for his release.Ekpo is an Associate Professor of Pathology and he was reportedly kidnapped during a church service on Sunday in Uyo.

A member of the family, who declined to be named, said on Tuesday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital that the kidnappers had made contact with Ekpo’s relatives. The source did not, however, state when the contact was made or with whom.It was not also possible to confirm the information from the vice-chancellor.Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Uyo branch has given security agencies 72 hours to rescue the vice-chancellor’s husband. Members of the union, in a protest march in Uyo, also threatened to withdraw their services if security agencies failed to rescue the victim.

Following the development, Chief Security Officers of all banks in the country on Wednesday held a four-hour closed door meeting with the DIG Operations at the Force Headquarters to fashion out ways on how the banks could provide their own alternative security.

Though the outcome of the meeting was not made public, but an inside source said the banks were not disposed to the new arrangement, and were still pleading  with the Inspector General of Police to rescind the decision as such directive will likely alter their operations and also jeopardize the security of customers.

THREE years after the discovery of crude oil in Ghana, the county has become the latest African oil producing country with an initial production of a modest 120,000 barrels or so per day. The tap was turned on by President John Atta Mills who also pledged that "oil will be a blessing and not a curse" to Ghana and its people.

The love of money, some say, is the beginning of all evil! “The Game” is a Ghanaian movie which certainly depicts that as scheming, seduction and murder (all for money), were incorporated to give it an aura of intrigue and suspense.

At the resumed hearing of the case before Justice Bolaji Candide-Johnson, lawyer to LCC, Mr Tunde Fagbohunlu (SAN), told the court that the claimant took part in a protest against the toll collection on December 4, 2010 as reported in a national newspaper.
He also informed the court that, Adegboruwa, in the interview granted to journalists, said the collection of tolls was nothing but political propaganda for the impending elections.

He added, “It is not right for the litigant having submitted the matter to court to be part of any demonstration and make inflammatory remarks against the Lagos State Government.”

He urged the court to hear the substantive application because the issue of toll collection had been overtaken by the Lagos State Government’s directive postponing the collection till further notice.

The Football Association has opened an investigation after Liverpool winger Ryan Babel posted a digitally altered picture on Twitter of referee Howard Webb wearing a Manchester United shirt and said his performance at Old Trafford was "a joke".


Webb awarded a penalty against Liverpool and later sent off its captain Steven Gerrard as Manchester United won 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Before linking to the image of Webb, Babel wrote on Twitter: "And they call him one of the best referees. That's a joke."

The FA have since said they " will definitely look into this matter." Babel could possibly be charged with improper conduct.

But what may pass for the biggest gift in the year still remains a promise – a promise worth being waited for, anyway. That is the one made by President Goodluck Jonathan at the Silverbird Organisation’s 30th anniversary celebration in Lagos. In a declaration that pleasantly shocked many practitioners, Jonathan said the Federal Government would power the entertainment industry with $200m.

First, the film makers, musicians, producers, actors and others present burst into a wild jubilation. But minutes after, they began to doubt if they heard the president right. Did he mean to say N200m? When Jonathan, however, cleared the air and stressed that government would intervene with $200m, the stakeholders did not know whether to continue to dance or go into a prayer session. The largesse seemed so huge that it began to look like a piece of drama.

Emerging details of this year’s budget proposals indicate that the Presidency has proposed to spend N574m on food in 2011. When this total is spread over the 365 days in 2011, the average amount that the Presidency will spend on food per day is a little over N1.57m.

The N574m is N168.7m more than the N405.3m spent by the same office on ‘food stuff supplies’ in 2010. However, the 2010 figure is exclusive of the sum expended on foods eaten during summits. A separate sub-head for “meals/entertainment” for summits held at the State House last year totalled N73m.

It (N574m) is also part of the N13.9bn that will be used to fund sub-heads and the overhead cost of the State House or Presidential Villa.
