This is really a wrong time to be sick in this country. If you do not have good money, forget it, they will say it is village people after ones life or as they say, doctor checked but saw nothing.
Omo, I bought my daily BP medicine ie coveram 10/10 for 34k this evening. 34k for just 28 tablets! Something I use to buy for ₦8900! That is aside lipitor, colchicine, febo g and doxazosin. Ie monthly maintainance medication of about 80k+. Persin no sick ohh, just maintainance medication.
How is this sustainable for goodness sake? How will people survive?
Meanwhile one person is using $800k to pay nursery and primary school fees for his puppies in advance! People are buying 250m, 500m(bullet proof) landcruiser as official cars after the get political appointments. Haba!!

I can help fix the machine but that problem is that it is obsolete and parts might not be available.
When these people buy such equipment, they should never pay in full. Instead they should lease from the manufacturer. Siemens, GE, Philips and Konica are all good brands.
An agreement of sales and service should be reached to reduce downtime.
This is a money spinner but most investors in Nigeria are only interested in hotel business.
A quick maths will give you an idea of the business aspect
Take for instance, at 100k per exam for easy 20 exams in a day is #2M
An equipment lease of 20 % interest rate of $150k ( equipment cost and installing) is just $30k. Divine this by 12 month you have $2500 a month
This amount is achievable in any teaching hospital MRI department in Nigeria.
And they will have newer, well maintained machine.
Lack of information and exposure to international market / investors is the problem in these respect.
In case they need my help and service I am available.

So, the hospitals work directly with those manufacturers, not the investors who matched them? If I understand correctly, the machines would be on the hospital's premises, right?

It is just that I don't trust anything public in Nigeria.

I know I've said it before - I have no solutions for healthcare and primary education. Healthcare in particular is an unavoidable risk and completely independent of voluntary demand. So they're not fit for the free market.

It's clear however that Black Africans, in this case Nigerians, can't organize a socialist healthcare system and the evidence is ALL of Nigeria's history since 1960. We just don't have what it takes and even the UK and Canada are having problems with their socialist healthcare system. [b] So we have to try ANOTHER option, which is completely profit driven, capitalist and free market. What other option do we have? I'd like to read your take.

Good Luck to Nigerians

I do agree that we are very incompetent in managing infrastructure and services for the public good, and also considering our unfortunate diversity. In that case, privatisation to the end. But people go suffer and die o. embarassed

Yes, the equipment will be mounted at the radiology suit of the hospital. However, a commitment of some part payment must be made. In some instances, it is the bank that comes in as an investor. These equipment companies are actually looking for other markets to expand their sales.

I know people will blame government but what is the management of uch doing?

They make shit tonne of money in that hospital to service or replace their equipments. What are they doing with the money?

It's not like they are rendering free service to the public.

We need to be asking right questions..

A newer 3.0T machine with 164 slices reconstruction capacity could have need for software upgrades on weekly basis.
Even with the “buy and go” you will still come back for these upgrades . By then, they will tell you the cost of flying an engineer down to Nigeria.
The repair code is enterprise base. It’s not something you can shop around.

UCH is a federal hospital so of course the government should rightly be blamed for not holding the management accountable.

A basic MRI machine costs about $350,000...........with import duty waivers......Federal government can buy these machines in bulk at a landing cost of 500 million naira per machine! yet the same machine will be contracted to a proxy company to be purchased at 3 billion per machine............na we hold out selves! Yet there is money for a 13 billion dollar Lagos calabar highway! Nigerians are not a serious people!

This made me sad, and may the Almighty God bring monumental sadness on all those responsible for the lack of a functional MRI Machine at UCH, Ibadan. Those who mismanaged the one there, those who watched it sitting down broken down for this long.

It's a big shame on the Federak Government. It's a big shame on Oyo state Government. Its a big shame on all the health workers at UCH and Nigeria in general. It should not just be strike and strike because of your personal welfare, stand up and fight for Nigeria and Nigerians.

The current Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Pate should do something immediately. There is the need for the Health Minister to wake up, sir your impressive profile bandied around before your appointment now says nothing impressive on what is happening at the Health sector since your appointment so far.

Asokoro General Hospital with broken down generators where staff can't work and patients suffer when there is no electricity, patients even those brought in as emergency are admitted on very tight corridors in the hospital, men and women are packed together at the Observation Ward, sir all these does not show you are alive as a minister even in Abuja where you are located. Your international reputation is turning out to be a joke.

Wake up to your responsibility Dr. Ali Pate, do not betray the trust placed on you.

MRI is an expensive diagnostic equipment. Our SR was telling us it costs about ₦2B to own one. People who can fix or produce it are rich automatically, these are stuff you should learn.

It's also a business idea that you buy this thing and put it in top teaching hospitals, if you're rich. A single diagnosis, using it goes for nothing less than 80k, and it's one of the unavoidable medical tools.

Thank me later.

That is really sad and pathetic, even more sad and pathetic that it has been "out of use for several years", smh. I had an MRI done recently and spent a great deal of time in that machine, as the MRI Technologist really took her time with me. I'm glad I'm a citizen of a country with wonderful healthcare and I didn't pay a dime either. I hope Nigeria can get to such level.

I wish I was very rich I would buy them the machine on the condition they charge very little for the investigation. Just enough to cover the maintenance costs of the machine. That way it would be affordable for those who really need it.

While we are both capitalists, privatising health care and education does not sit right with me. That is something I have wanted to converse with you - your penchant for privatising health care and education. Nigerians don't even have the money to pay for these services at public hospitals. Would they be able to pay when it is privatised? The same holds true for education. Unlike the US, where there are equally good public universities, most countries' top universities are publicly owned. So, why advocate for privatisation?

Let's look at Brazil, where education is free till the university level. There ought to be subsidies in certain sectors, of which education and health care are paramount.

Not everyone will have same economic purchasing power to procure healthcare services be it free market or otherwise.
The priority should be quality which free market has the potential to deliver.

I reckon other players will tap in with solutions to cater for the economically disadvantaged populace via healthcare schemes and credit system.

The major focus is the needed reforms to guide the industry modus operandi.

The money one politician (esp a governor) would launder from his state to pay his children's school fees for life and hide the remaining in the School's account is enough to buy 10 MRI machines, and more..

Nigeria is generally flawed (I hate to call it a joke). We run a system that ensures that things like this continue to elude us..

The powerful rulers (and weaker institutions) we have created haven't help the country and things would only get south from here..

We would start to get it right when we start to create stronger institutions and weaker individuals..

That would start with creating a brand new People's Constitution..

What will you write in the constitution that will make your leaders more responsible or create institutions that are credible?

my brother Nigeria leaders are just complex. They go outside the country to enjoy this same health infrastructures ooo but prefer to use the money meant for the development of the country to themselves.
To the ogas of the hospital and there clicks that help them sign the contract when the govt finally want to do the right thing, the vultures around the contract in connivance with the head(medical director/head of clinicals and admin top guys) of most of the higher centres(medical centres and teaching hospitals of Nigeria) they end up buying refurbish MRI and CT scan , they will just do some small repairs on it and paint. At the end of the day the machine pack up and no body can probe anybody because they all were involved in the sharing sharing of contract.
Nigeria still get long way to go

Peter Obi is the only governor that bought ventilators .

National hospital had only two, and later Aso Rock came and took one from them. Peter Obi bought fifteen ventilators for Anambra state.
