Shollypopz: What does Yoruba mean?? I want to know why it's offensive.Yoruba means "oily soup" It is a term used by Igbos to refer to Yorubas cos it is claimed that their soups are oily. Most people find it denigrating. 1 Like |

some-girl: Nwaanyi Owere, ndaa? Does all of Owere/Urata replace the 's' sound with the 'sh' sound? some-girl: The standardized way to say 'small' in Igbo is obere while the standardized way to say large is nnukwu. Although ntakiri also means small, it isn't the standard version. |
Re: Igbo learning thread + Translator by Nobody: 8:51am On Nov 18, 2012 |
Chukskalidon: 'taa' cannot stand on its own and mean 'si ebea puo'. 'Taa' is an Igbo exclamation word, it can be used before any word or sentence to show how serious and resistance u are e.g taa mma gi ura ee,taa i na-ayi ara,taa onweghi ihe na-eme etc. Is the bolded the same as "onwero ife na eme"? |

I found my old notebook. Before my blackberry was stolen, *cries*, I was learning Igbo from my cousin via BBM who stays in Abuja. I scribbled a bunch of phrases down and practiced them. I'll go ahead and share some common ones (correct me/us if any are wrong): Chelu m biko. A nu'm a bia. (Wait for me, please. I am coming [as in "I'll be back" and not what you dutty people have in mind lol]) E' na nu? (You understand?) E' nu go? (You hear me?) A nu gom. (I have heard.) Ula o na tu gi? (Are you tired/is sleep catching you?) Jisie ike na olu. (Keep up the good work/stay strong at work.) A gwa gom gi. (I told you.) A nom ya. (I'm alright.) Bia ebe a. (Come here.) <--- my mother's favorite. Gbanye oku. (Turn on the light.) Gbanyuo oku. (Turn off the light.) Biko, e weni iwe. (Please, don't be angry. Or, excuse me [begging pardon].) Nye m aka! (Help!/Give me a hand!) A ghotaghim. (I don't understand). 1 Like 1 Share |

ogugua88:It's "I have told you" as opposed to "I told you". "I told you" should be "A gwam gi". ogugua88: A nom ya. (I'm alright.)It's "I'm around". "I'm alright" is "Anom ofuma" |

Re: Igbo learning thread + Translator by Afam4eva(m): 9:25am On Nov 18, 2012 |
Idowuogbo:The Igbo word for "IGBO" is Igbo. There's no Igbo in Ogugua's statement yet you translated the last part to include Igbo. Translation: leave him alone. How are you? I won't really blame you cos the two sentences are nowhere related. |
