Both spirits stood by through the night as they watched the old man labor through the hard surface of the ground, digging a hole in the ground to bury his son. The ground was hard and the fact that he was filled with sorrow made the work a lot harder for the man but the spirits chose to watch him from afar and allowed him do what was necessary by himself, They had no need to sit down and did not see the body; the sorrow Ojoade was filled with was enough to tell them that there would be hell to pay by the person responsible for his son’s death.

Night ran into morning in the village and the events of the previous day could not be forgotten. Parents mourned children, children mourned parents and friends sang quietly about the evil that was around. As the mourning continued that night, people who were lucky enough to have their families intact could only thank the gods for saving them and those who were not so fortunate cried into the night indoors as they were afraid of what might become of them if they ventured out.

As the dew came down at dawn it brought something else with it. The villagers passed the night with horrible dreams where they saw themselves pursued by creatures too scary to describe. The found themselves pursued by demons of the dark times and they could not escape those dreams. They were all caught by the monsters at the same time and just as the monsters clawed into their hearts and bite into their minds, they screamed out into the morning. The screams sounded like a synchronized service of noise which was planned which disturbed the scary peace and broke more confusion among the residents as those who were screaming could not find words to describe their fear. They continued screaming for minutes and just as the screaming started, it died down with the victims slipping into the long dark corridors of death without being able to give an account of what killed them.

Those who stayed awake due to sorrow and were preparing to go out at dawn where the ones who could best describe the screams. It sounded like a sign of war and an indication that whoever was fighting them was still around and was in no mood to tone down his attacks.

***************************

Lekan woke up and when he lazily opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was the eyes of a huge snake looking into his eyes. Like anyone, he jumped off the bed as Mila’s voice filled his head.

“I see you survived the evil that visited most people during the night. I see the powers of my queen protected you too and kept the monsters from cutting you into pieces in your dream. You should be grateful and thank her for her protection and her graciousness in offering you comfort”

Lekan remembered the words of the old witch when she commanded the snake not to hurt him and his sanity began to come back to him. He sat back on the bed.

“What are you talking about? I am thankful to her for giving me a place to stay but what evil went around the village during the night?”

The huge snake did not reply, instead it hissed and crawled off the bed and started climbing one of the pillars in the room, up to the roof. Lekan tried to assess the length of the snake and could say the snake was longer than 40 feet. It was definitely a Boa from the color on the skin but the fact that it could talk threw off a lot of things he knew and thought about snakes.

He asked again. “What happened during the night that made you say all those?”

To his question, the snake gave no reply but the reply came from the old woman who entered the room from nowhere.

“During the night, a dark spell ran through the village and turned people’s dreams against them. Everyone affected had just one dream and in that dream, they were pursued by a monster and it caught up with them tearing their insides out and killing them in their dreams.”

“Well if it was in their dreams, then it is a good thing right? When they wake up, they'll be fine”

The snake’s voice rang in the air around him.

“Understand the dark side he does not. See beyond what his eyes show him he does not.”

The old woman shook her head.

“It is not that easy, the spell is a simple one used a lot by people but I have never seen it used against this number of people at the same time. When the monster kills a person in the dream, the person also dies in reality”

Lekan felt a cold chill run down his spine as he looked up at the woman who was dressed in just a white robe. Her hair were bonded into one bunch and she looked like someone’s favorite grandmother except that he knew she is more than that.

She brought out a necklace and laid it on the beside him on the bed.

Get up, put your shoes on and wear this. It is the same thing I protect my house with and it will protect you against whatever evil it is we are going out to meet”.

Lekan suddenly felt his mouth go dry.

“I don’t understand” was his reply

“My sisters and I are going out to meet the person who you said you met at the hill. You will be going there with us”

“Erm...why do I have to go with you? I have seen him once and I think that one time is enough for me. I will personally want to put distance between this village and I immediately it is bright enough to travel”

“Young man, you said yourself you have lost men and friends, this village has also lost its children, we cannot just sit down and watch whoever is doing this continue and get away with it. We have to fight back”

“You can fight back, I have nothing to fight with unlike you, remember?”

“Where is your courage young man? No one is asking that you to fight, but you are the only one who has seen this person and you got away from him. You would take us to him and then you can run away to wherever it is you want but not before then and that is final. Or would you rather stay here and have Mila keep you company?”

Lekan looked towards the snake and could almost swear that the snake smiled.

“When do we leave?” Lekan said as he picked up the amulet and put it around his neck.

“We go now”

The door to the hut opened in front of Lekan and he found himself looking into the dark morning. He guessed the time to be around 4am. He took a step out of the hut with the old witch behind him and he heard wailing from all around. Amidst the wailing, he could recognize the songs of goodbye all around him. People sang songs to their dead loved ones.

He walked out with the old woman walking directly behind him as the door to the hut closed by itself. Lekan looked back at it and prayed to whoever could hear him that it would not be the last house he would enter. He prayed that the morning would not be the last he saw as he felt himself shaken by fear. He felt the old woman’s hand on his shoulder as she gave him a reassuring look which even through the dark morning, he saw and could draw strength from.

They walked into the forest and along the path that Lekan had passed when he fled the flames which chased him towards the hut and all around. They saw the burnt remains of plants, animals and trees which were caught in the unnatural inferno.

They walked some distance and a figured appeared in front of them. Lekan froze in his path as the figure started walking towards them slowly. He heard the old woman’s voice call out.

“Awero, the raging storm that spares no one, I hope you came prepared”

The figure which turned out to be a woman.

“My queen gave a command, who am I to turn it down?”

Lekan saw that she was one of the five who met with the old woman the previous night and every now and then, another would join them until the whole assembly was complete, just like the night before. By this time, the Hill was in sight, the top which has been blown off was absent of course and pieces of rocks laid all around them making access more difficult.

The sun was already coming up in the east and visibility was increasing as they got closer to their destination when they heard footsteps. The steps were not those of a single person but sounded like a group of people. They turned in the direction the steps were coming from and some of the women raised their hands but the queen did nothing but watched and muttered beneath her breath.

As the group approached, their shapes formed with one man standing in front of a group, holding a staff and walking with all boldness. He looked up and saw the little group of women in front of him and the leader of the Ogboni walked on. He has seen the witches on a march countless times but he had never seen them march out in the morning with the sun about to rise. They always tried to conceal their identities so they carry out their activities at night but right now, they had chosen to come out in the light and he had a feeling it had something to do with the events of the previous day

The witches stood in front of the group of old men walking towards them. The old men were surrounded by the spirits but with the witches present, the spirits went into their invisible form. As much as they feared the Ogboni members, the witches are always a bother to the spirits as the issues between them always ended up with the spirits losing and losing big. Only the oldest and most powerful of the spirits attempt to stand against the witches as in the order, next to the gods, the witches are next. They possess so much power, sometimes even the gods envy them.

However this time, the old men were not in the mood to be stopped by these women. They might be stronger and most times more merciless but they had to do what they needed to do without hindrance. The night before, they had resolved to reason with the person behind all the killing but the events in the middle of the night changed their resolve. An evil spirit had entered the already weakened minds of the inhabitants and killed them in their dreams, in the most horrible manner. The screams of those who died was enough to tell them that they did not die painlessly and it surely was not quick.

What bothered the leader was not really the fact that so many people were killed but that they were killed at the same time. It was almost inconceivable that such a spell could affect so many people at the same time. It would take a lot of energy to do that and a whole lot of resolve; resolve being determination either positive or negative. The ogboni could fight it but the extent was so much and the fact that the amount of people infected was that high made a counter-move highly impossible. Even if they had weeks to prepare, they would surely fail.

The attacks however gave them an insight into the strength of the killer. He possibly did not possess any strength of his own because if he did, he would have killed them himself without spells and monsters. He would also not need to send the huge rocks and set the forest on fire if he could kill people by himself which meant that he would most likely have a source of strength and that source could be destroyed. The source would be what the spirits would look for while they try to see if they can match his strength.

Seeing the witches here now, he wished they were not on the killer’s side or this battle could end long before he and his followers can reach the killer. The spirits would not join him in a fight against the witches, not even if the families they have sworn to protect are being butchered in front of them.

They got close to the witches and the witched spread out. They were unusually few in number and behind them was a man. The leader of the Ogboni for some reason guessed that the man might be the killer but the man looked too afraid and his facial appearance did not portray that of someone who lived in the past. His eyes shone of new life and his skin was smooth; too smooth to have lived that long. When they came close enough, he raised his staff and addressed the witches.

“The sun is almost rising Adunni, you and your sisters should be home sleeping by now. We know you don’t quietly enjoy walking around under it while you are so well dressed”

Adunni, the leader of the witches sensed the hidden insult in his words and replied coolly.

“You would do well to keep your tongue in cheek Apena, or else it will be stuck to the roof of your mouth before you have a chance to utter another word. Reports have reached me of how you and your people have turned the village to a graveyard and that is no concern of mine, but the deaths of my sister which it resulted in is what will not go unpunished. Or will you deny that you are not involved in the attacks in the village?”

The Apena (a title) was surprised, relieved and scared at the allegations. The witches think he and his initiates are the ones behind the attacks which meant the witches were not working with the evil being. If the witches think the Ogboni are behind the attacks then there might be a fight between them. A fight he was not interested in getting into due of several reasons.

“My men and I are not behind this, we have reports that there is a man bent on taking revenge on the whole village and he is the one doing all this. We are on the way to meet him so as to see if we can stop him before he does more damage. What is your mission here with the sun rising?”

Adunni’s look did not change at the news that revealed they were on the same side; she was not used to showing emotion, not when the Ogboni was involved in her issues.

“Seems we are on the same side here and we might as well work together but tell me Apena, what are you doing with all the spirits around you? They seem to think they are hidden from us but we see them clearly. How is it that you two foes are walking side by side?”
Re: <<<The Tri-Paternal Son>>> by Mynd44: 7:58pm On Apr 28, 2013
“They are with us for the same reason as you are matching in the forest. They are fighting for the families they are sworn to protect. Looks like we are on the same side and hence we should work together to ensure that this fight ends in our favour”

The old witch was not impressed with his words.

“My sisters and I are capable of fighting this to a logical end. We don’t need the extra hand or distraction but if you feel like coming along, you are free to but know I will not be responsible for any of you.”

The Apena seem pleased enough with her decision and he nodded in acknowledgement to Adunni.

They waited and allowed the witches stay in front while they stayed behind them. Adunni saw this but said nothing. she looked towards Awero and spoke directly into her mind.

“I don’t trust them, watch them well and if any of them as much as lift his staff, burn him alive and make sure he suffers long before he dies.”

Awero nodded in acknowledgement pleased that her queen would trust her enough to put the security of the coven in her hands. Among the witches, she is the one they call when they needed someone killed or tortured due to the fact that she always showed no emotions. She has been called hollow once and all that is due to the fact that she was violated as a child before initiated as a witch. The violator was her father and the first thing she did when she got powers was to kill him slowly. Chopping him into bits very slowly, for days, and making sure he did not die immediately.

The walk to the hill was slower as the population increased. The spirits flew all around them and sometimes, flying in front to see what lies ahead. Lekan felt useless as the creatures which flew around him seem to know every inch of the forest and the way to the hill like the back of their immaterial hands.

When they got to the hill, it stood as Lekan remembered it the day before but this time, the one they had come to seek was present, apparently waiting for them to show up. He was sitting at the base of the hill with his legs crossed, smiling to himself as they drew closer. He appeared to not know they were coming but each individual in the group knew within their souls that he had already seen them from afar and knew exactly what they were there for.

The hill looked every inch like Lekan had left it the day before. The top blasted off, bits of rocks littering the whole place and nothing in sight however, this time the grasses around them were burnt to their roots. The air smelt of smoke enough to choke a human being and if not that he was so pumped up with adrenaline, he would have had a coughing spell at its extreme.

There did not seem to be anyone in the vicinity of the hill as it looked isolated but it still had a presence that Lekan could only feel the fringes of. He felt the hairs on his hand rise and then they fell again as though they were moving with the speed of the pulse of his own body. His heart beat increased and his face turned white and he felt the blood flowing in his veins go cold. The wind came from the direction they came from and the air seemed to add to the cold he was experiencing. He looked around trying to find what could be the cause but he saw nothing. He looked around him and realized that he was not the only one feeling weird. The witches all had their hands raised and the old men had formed what looked like a straight line with their leader only edging out a little. He realized that in the time he had looked around, everyone had formed what seemed like battle formations without regard for him and he hurried back towards them.

He really could not fit into any of the two groups and he looked above him and also saw that the spirits had also formed something. They had huddled up together to form a sort of ring above them. The ring was not totally visible to him as he could see through it but he could see the ring and he saw that the ring rolled above them. The speed of the revolution was not really great but fast enough for it to look like a non ending circular disc with a hole in the middle.

The sun was already rising in the sky and the first yellow rays were beginning to hit the forest floors. Most of the trees which blocked out the light was burnt and so the rays struckthe ground from all corners giving the forest a much more gholly appearance.

Lekan moved closer to the two groups and decided to stay in between both groups.

“If there is anything that’s going to come out,I will be safe here” he told himself but as he drew closer in between them, the amulet on his chest shone and he was drawn towards the witches. He turned back to face their leader and saw that her face had changed. The face had become what he saw when he strayed into her hut and tried to shoot her down. The garments of the others in their company had changed colors, some had become deep red and some gray. The queen appeared to be in a white flowing loosed robe and her feet was barely touching the ground.

He looked to the Ogboni members and their garments remained white except that they had their staffs raised and some of them were rolling their handkerchief in the air which revolved quietly as they cut through the air and somehow charged the atmosphere.

The leader of the witches knew for certain that they were not alone in the forest and she opened her third eye but even with that she was still blind. All she could see were her companions and the spirits flying above them and traces of energy around her. The energy looked strange and unlike anything she had seen before. The leader of the Ogboni had told her that the person wielding the energy lived in the past and she did not doubt that.

The bands the energy was wrapped around spoke of energy deeper than her knowledge could tell her. It was almost godlike but not quite. She had been in the presence of a few gods and she knew how much power they come with just to appear. This was not on the same level with it but it was close. Too close.

The Apena had seen things in his life and fear had never been part of him before but the look in the eyes of the witches scared him. It did not take his deepest wisdom for him to realize that they were digging deep into the sources of their powers to form a shield around them. he felt the tension in the air and knew it did not come from them. There was something or someone else producing the energy around and that scared him the more. They had their staff and could summon fire but that was about all they could do and the energy he saw around was too much for him to even begin to understand not to talk of figure out a defense when he had an idea. He told all his members and they all seemed to agree with him. The spirits were flying above them and he spoke softly into the air and allowed the air carry the message to them. The spirits got the message clearly as the ring they formed broke, they came downwards. They flew towards the Ogboni and flew into their bodies. The member screamed in horror as their bodies were taken over by more than 30 spirits each and they felt their might surge.
Re: <<<The Tri-Paternal Son>>> by Mynd44: 8:42pm On May 04, 2013
The leader of the spirits took the body of the Apena and the Apena felt more power than he could imagine. He saw things that existed before him and intangible things such as light and air appeared tangible and then they all heard a laugh.

With the laugh came a cold voice. A voice devoid of all emotions and was as cold as ice but it also came with power. The voice made small rocks vibrate and the air blew in a confusing form.

“You left your houses and covens this early to come fight me? I am sorry but you only came here to meet death. It would have been better if you stayed in your homes and with your families and said goodbye to them for when you were walking here, I had gone into the village and fulfilled my vow to kill everyone living there. Man, woman and child alike are all dead. Perhaps if you had been there with them, you might have comforted them and been able to say your goodbyes. You cannot stop their death as that is impossible but you could have been comforted with your own death as you would die. You would all die and there will be no one to see your bodies”.

“Show yourself coward”. The queen said.

The voice came back but this time, it had no humor in it.

“Me, a coward? You came here with an army to fight only me and I am the coward? You shiver at the feeling of my power and my voice brings cold to your nerves and yet I am the coward? You think you can kill me but before me, you are mere mortals. To me, you are as powerless as little ants and there in nothing that can be done to me. My powers are beyond your understanding and you cannot hurt me. Your little magic will simply be like water to a duck’s back to me. If I should show myself, you are more likely to bow down out of fear than fight me”

The witches were growing impatient and Awero replied.

“You have been speaking of your power all this while and yet you are hiding behind rocks. We control all elements of nature and fear is not bred in us. You think your powers are stronger than ours and yet you hide and send your voice to do what you should do. Why not come out and see if you are strong as you think”

The queen stood there watching the surrounding hoping to catch a glimpse of the person behind the voice. She had already told one of her sisters to send some energy to track the source of the voice and knew it was only a matter of time before she gets where it was coming from and then, she intends to strike it with just one spell and be done. She did not care what the Ogboni said about seeking peace and was really not interested in the source of the powers she was feeling from him. he had killed her sisters and also killed the villagers although she could not say if what he said about killing everyone in the village was true or not. Right there, all she wanted was justice for her sisters and she would get it before she leaves even if it means losing her life.

The Apena could not decide what to do. The purpose of coming there was first to make peace with the person behind it but when he said he had killed the remaining villagers, he had sent a spirit back and the news that was brought back was not one he liked. Every one of the villagers had been killed with blood oozing out of every bore on their face. He began to regret coming out so early as he thought.

“Perhaps if we had stayed a little longer, we might have stopped the killings", The spirit within him seemed to have a different idea.

“He would still have done it and you won’t be able to resist him. At least now that we have numbers, we might be able to fight him so he does not move on to another village. We have to stand and fight this to the end”

The probe came back to the witch tracking the voice and immediately, the queen wasted no time as she raised her hands and a burst of light went out of her hand into the rock where the voice was coming from. The light did not seem like much but the impact was felt by everyone and it even made the air around it come ablaze as though they were on fire. The rock which was the target burst into flames and was reduced to pieces not bigger than specks of sand. Where the huge piece of rock stood earlier was reduced to bare ground. Considering that the rock was more than 4 feet in diameter, Lekan found himself shocked.

In place of the rock, a man stood. His dressing was simple unlike what Lekan and his companions saw the previous day and he seemed surprised that his cover had been blown but he showed no signs of fear. He stood looking at them and was about to say something when the Butcher who was standing right behind the Apena raised his staff and sent a ball of fire towards him. The ball started small and on impact with the man, it turned into a huge fire but it stopped almost as fast as it started as the man walked casually towards them.
Re: <<<The Tri-Paternal Son>>> by Mynd44: 8:47pm On May 04, 2013
He was bare-footed but his feet did not seem to touch the ground and he slowly moved towards them.

“I have to admit, I underestimated the power of you, queen, your spells are quite strong but do you think it will be strong enough to defeat me? Here is a little taste of it”

He raised his right hand and a huge rock was lifted from the ground and hurled at the witches by an unseen force. The witches face did not change but Lekan shivered as the rock came towards them. The rock barely made it half way before one of the witches raised her eyes and shot out fire from it, melting the rock into liquid. Immediately, another blew towards the molten rock whichwas still suspended and the cold air turned it solid as it turned into grains of sand and the wind simply blew them past the witches as the queen’s voice came through.

“Throwing rocks? It seems you do not know who it is you are up against”

The man smiled.

“That was just a teaser to see what you can offer. Believe me, there is more and better surprises coming towards you”

A barrage of energy came from the Ogboni members towards the man. The energy consisting of each elements were hurled at him at great speeds and he fell to the ground as he found himself wrapped in a bubble with a mixture of water, fire and wind attacking him inside the bubble. The elements took shapes of huge human hands and threw punches at the man whilst inside the bubble as the members had their hands stretched towards the bubble and their concentration was on him. The attacks continued for a few seconds and then the man stood straight inside the bubble. The attacks seized and the bubble burst. He landed on his feet and looked towards the members.

“I used to be a part of you once and we used to bind spirits then too. Unfortunately for you eni ba mo ati wa e lo ma mo ati lo e (It is he who knows how it comes that knows how it will go)”

He looked straight at them and spoke some incantations. The effect of the incantations could not be seen but some seconds later, the Apena felt like his inside were being torn to pieces and he screamed into the morning.

Seconds later, he felt ordinary as he saw the spirits which had possessed them earlier standing in front of them and then he heard the voice of the man.

“You spirits hear my voice and obey it, kill the members”

With that, the spirits attacked the Ogboni with all they had. Fire and wind blew all around while the witches prepared a spell towards the man.

The man turned to the witches just as several strands of energy left their hands and struck him and he was thrown back towards the rocks. He tried to stand up but was hit by another spell from the queen and at the sametime, Awero sent a huge ball of fire towards him.

The space in front of the hill had turned into the scene of what looked like a war as the Ogboni battled their own spirits and the witches tried to hurt Akanni whose skin did not seem to break even with the constant attack coming from the witches.

Akanni raise his hands and a sort of shield appeared around him, he raised his right hand and a spear made of energy shot out of his hand and was driven into one of the witches as she slumped into the ground and died.

One of the witches looked to her side and tried to pick up the dead witch but was shocked when she looked and saw a huge rattle snake beside her. The snake got to at least 70 feet and the diameter was shocking, she tried to pull back and the snake went for her, bit her at the neck and held on. The queen did not bother looking towards her falling sisters as she and Awero had formed a massive rock ade of energy and attempted to throw it towards Akanni.

Akanni held his hand up and the rock stood in the air, the remaining two witches joined their strength to try to press the rock on as the witch which was bitten by the snake died. The snake dropped her and went towards the witches and in its path was Lekan.

The snake came towards him fast and not having anything in its way but trees. It navigated through them and Lekan tried to run but was tripped by a branch hanging out of the ground and he fell to the ground. He looked back to see the huge snake a few meters away from him as it took a plunge backward in an attempt to strike and then it came forward. Its speed was high and its mouth was opened. as it was about biting Lekan, the amulet on his chest became red as a light shone out of it.

The snake stopped as it tried to understand the light. It was partly blinded by it and almost as sudden as the light shone, something came out of the amulet, Mila.

Mila's black body jumped out of the amulet and she went straight for the snake. The both of them got tangled up as a fight ensured between them while Lekan, for the first time ever, was glad he saw Mila. Her mouth was clamped on the huge rattlesnake’s body and she did not let go but the snake rolled all over the ground and Mila was forced to release her.

The two snakes faced one another and the rattlesnake tried to deal a blow on Mila but she ducked. The rattlesnake was bigger and looked stronger but Mila was faster and with each blow from the snake that she ducked, she delivered her’s and she did not miss; not once.

The witches were still in a battle with Akanni while a lot of the Ogboni members were already dead. Akanni dodged a blow from the witches and he threw a ball of fire between them. The fire engulfed one of them and she screamed in pain. The queen stooped trying to attack him and spoke a spell towards the battling Ogboni members and the spirits and a lot of the spirits caught fire. Some of them stopped attacking and fled but some fought on. The members too had gone weary of fighting as some of them gave up and died faster that the spirits killed them.

Now the witches were reduced to just three and even they grew tired and Akanni did not seem to be tired. They had tried every spell they knew and none had much effect on him. He was not even bleeding but the queen could see blood ooze from the head of the third witch as she had been struck by a rock thrown at her by Akanni. Another rock came from nowhere and she stumbled and fell to the ground while Mila and the huge rattlesnake were still caught up in their fight. The rattle snake was bleeding from the several wounds Mila had inflicted on it while Mila was unscathed. She was not even tired as she continued fighting while Lekan was rooted to the ground as he watched the fight in horror.

The sun was out and shinning down at them, the sky devoid of clouds and the very air smelt of sulphur. Akanni stood some distance away.

“Most of your company is dead, give up this fight and I might spare your lives”

“Hours ago, you said you will kill us all and now, you say you would spare us. Did we strike you somewhere that hurts?” Awero replied.

“The queen cut in and said, we will not stop until we avenge the death of our sisters you killed and if we die doing so, we don’t mind”

“If it is death you choose, I will give it to you”. With that, Akanni raised his hands in the air and a ball of fire formed between his palms, he spoke some words into them and was about to throw it when the air around suddenly got charged and a blinding bolt of lightning ripped from the cloudless sky. It was almost as if the lightning came from nowhere and it struck Akanni where he stood. He screamed in pain and horror for the first time and even the witches were surprised. They did not know where the lightning came from.

“Is this the work of Sango or what is this?” The queen asked.

She had barely finished her sentence when Ojoade appeared from another within a bolt of lightning holding in his hand the ose of the great god Sango.

“So you are the one who killed the whole village including my son. This is the day you join them.”

The queen looked at him and was sure it was Ojoade but his features were different. He was no longer the old doctor she knew who her leader told to help out. His features looked like that of the man she has been fighting except that he was on her side. His eyes shone red and his hands burned with bright orange. He came in company of two spirits and they seemed not affected by the spell that affected the other ones as the started attacking Akanni immediately.

Ojoade walked to the witches.

“Are you okay, I was overwhelmed with the grief of my son and could not muster my strength on time but I am here now. He is going to die for making me bury my only son. He turned me into a banana tree without offspring to replace me when I go.”

The spirits had already started engaging Akanni but he was too strong. He created a vortex and sucked the younger one into it. He was about to hit the older one when Awero hit him with another fireball. He turned to her and was about to say something when the queen shot a long arrow from raw energy towards him, the arrow did not seem to do much but Ojoade summoned lightning down and Akanni was hurled against the rocks. He stood up and felt something warm on his cheeks; he was bleeding.

Akanni wiped the blood away with his right hand and made his left fingers into a fist. Awero felt as if that fist was inside her as her insides turned and she convulsed. The spirit sent a rock which the queen had lit towards him and it struck him with being able block it but it was too late as Awero fell to the ground.

Mila at this point had killed the rattlesnake and rushed towards Awero.

“Take her away to my chamber Mila and see if you can help her” the queen shouted as Mila swallowed Awero and sped fast into the forest towards the Queens’s hut.

The rock hit Akanni and he felt a pain rip through his body and he felt his rage rise. He got up and formed a rope of energy threw it towards the spirit and pulled it close. The spirit which had always hid its face in its hood was drawn towards the man and felt the energy inside it drain and when it was close enough to Akanni, it pulled up its hood and looked into Akanni’s eyes.

Akanni felt as though he was falling into an abyss as he the spirit turned its greatest weapon against him. He felt pain inside himself and also fear rise within him. The spirit was sucking the life out of Akanni and Ojoade and the queen were attacking him at the same time. He might have let go of the spirit but felt himself coming back to life as the strand of energy around was killing the spirit.

It fell to the ground slowly as its immaterial body became lost to the wind. Akanni turned towards Ojoade and the queen.

“Just the two of you and that weakling on the ground left to die”

On the hill where Ojoade and Babatunde lived, the fight on the other hill could not be seen except for the lightning and the flashes made by the balls of fire being thrown at one another. The hill was quiet and the grave Ojoade had dug for his son was there without a marker. Suddenly, the ground started shaking and the sand over Babatunde’s body moved away first slowly and then very fast until all the sand had moved away and all that was left in the hole was the body of Babtunde wrapped in a mat which his father buried him with. The body floated out of the grave and caught fire as the body fell to the ground and the boy stood up.

Each strand of hair on his head stood and he felt some new kind of power flowing within his veins. The places where blood had oozed out showed no evidence of bleeding as all evidence of the previous day disappeared. His body was soiled by the sand which was thrown over him as were his clothes. There was sand on his head, nostrils and ears and his shoeless feet was also soiled with it. He felt the bones of his hand get creaky as a result of them being held in the same place for a long time and his tongue dried as a result of the lack of moisture.

His eyes were still closed as he stood on the plains just feet away from his grave and he stretched his hands sideways as his stiffened bones cranked into place. He spread his fingers and the sound they made broke the silence a little and he attempted to walk.

In the distant hill, the battle was still going on and even with the sun already up ahead, the flashes could be seen and the remnants of the used up energy filled everywhere including the hill which Tunde stood. He tried to open his eyes and for the first time, he felt the dirt on his skin as they felt irritating. He raised his hand to his face to brush them off and even before his hand reached his face, a bright light shone from inside him. With the light came a huge force and all the dirt lingering on him and his clothes were blown away immediately leaving him spotlessly clean. He opened his eyes and closed them back as the sun was not merciful on them. He squinted a little and gradually opened his eyes as they got used to the brightness.

He looked down to his feet and saw that he was not standing on the ground but he was suspended a few inches above the ground. At first fear took him but he saw that he could actually control the force holding him as he descended to the ground by just thinking about it. He could not understand what was happening to him as he felt strong; stronger than he had every felt in his life but still he could feel every inch of his body as normal as they ever was. There was a strange feeling around him and when he looked closely, he saw that there was a sort of barely visible strands which encased him. The strands formed a circle and they prevented even the wind from touching his body. He looked towards his home and saw what was left of the house and a feeling of sadness enveloped him.

Quickly he moved to go towards the house and he found out that instead of walking, he flew towards it with great speed.

“Father” He called out but got no reply.

He looked around again hoping to see if his father was anywhere close by and saw nothing. There was no one around as the whole place was deserted and that was when he heard thunder coming from the hillsthat were supposed to have been blasted. He moved to the edge of the hill and looked down and saw that the forest that used to be down below had been burnt to the ground with only the stems of few trees remaining. The forest down was visible but the hill was not as it was enveloped in smoke and nothing got out of it.

A bolt of lightning ran down from the cloudless sky into the smoke and there was a deafening sound of thunder came with the lightning that he could not understand. He moved back a little away from the edge and wondered what could be happening down there and he felt drawn to it. He remembered part of what had happened that the hill was supposed to be blasted and he thought of staying away but he was drawn to it by another force. It was almost as if he was being pulled towards the hill down below. He pulled back and resisted and moved towards the house confused as to what was happening and then he heard his father’s voice from down below.

The voice said nothing but it was screaming as though in severe pain and he turned towards the edge once again. He looked down below and tried to look into the smoke but it was too strong. He noticed that there were flashes of light coming from inside the smoke but he could not make out any shapes or figures and then he heard another scream. This time, the voice was a female voice and it added to his confusion. He turned his back to the hill thinking he was hearing the wind but the voice was so distinct to be anything else but his father’s. He turned towards the sounds again and thought of what to do.

“Perhaps father is trapped in the fire down below or he went looking for me and was arrested by the security” he thought to himself.

“I will have to go down there to see what I can do to help him”

The fire had already cleared most of the trees which made descending through that point impossible but Tunde had no other choice than to go downhill from there. His walking was slow as he tried to avoid the roots there so as not to cut his leg as he was not wearing any shoes. He moved down slowly but his left leg was caught by a twig and he fell to the ground. He put his hands forward instinctively to break his fall and was about to hit the ground when he discovered that he was hovering above the ground again and the strands around him were even thicker than before.

He looked at his hands and discovered that the color had changed to almost white as he floated. He got up without his hands touching the ground to support him and even when he stood, he was floating. He tried to move his legs but they did not much good as they were suspended and they did not move him forward. He thought of his father in trouble and he noticed that he moved forward a little. He looked towards the hill and thought of moving and he discovered that he could move but not with his body but by merely thinking about moving and so he channeled his thoughts towards the smoke and went as fast as he could. The speed he went with itself made him almost fall dizzy within the strands.

The battle at the foot of the hill had gone on for hours and the bodies of Ojoade and the queen were beginning to fail as a result of too much energy passing through them. Ojoade was not cut on any part of his body but with each bolt of lightning, he felt his bone aches. His skin was getting dry as the immortal powers threatened to destroy his mortal body. He tied as much as possible to keep it together as his enemy too was bleeding on his face and some part of his skin was parched due to the fireballs hurled at him. Ojoade brought down another series of lightning from the sky and it struck Akanni.

The witch queen knew she could not go on for longer. She would either have to abandon the fight soon or the powers she was wielding would destroy her and she would die. If she had been 20 years younger, she would have been able to continue the fight but right now she was weakened by age and it was telling on her face and her body. Her garment still shone and the strength behind her spells were as powerful as when the battle started but she grew weak and the enemy was not showing signs of dying yet.

The bolt struck Akanni and he fell to the ground. He felt another cut on his skin and he knew his defenses were beginning to fade away. His powers were much but the thunderer’s powers was something he could not imagine. He thought he might be a worshiper of the god but no worshipper even in his time had such powers that could almost be equal to the god himself. The strength of the lightning was biting into the fabric of his strength and tearing it to bits slowly.

Akanni got to his feet and was about to raise some spell when he felt a bolt of light in form of a rope wrap itself around him. He looked towards Ojoade and Ojoade was holding on with his right hand to the other hand of the light. With his left hand, Ojoade raised the Ose and lightning came rushing from the sky and struck Akanni and he screamed. He felt the rope loosen itself and just as he was about to move away, fire flew through the wind from the witch’s hands and burnt his skin. He had used some of his shield on the lightning and the fire burnt him. He felt the fire inside him as part of his garment started to burn. It was obvious the witch was digging into a source of strength he had not seen or witnessed since the fight started and this scared him. He tried to move away from the line of the fire but he was immobile as with the fire came a spell of immobility.

The witch attacked Akanni with all her might. She knew she was approaching her end and she might not be able to kill him but she was determined to do one thing before she dies; make him weak enough to be killed. Her head ached and a pain ripped through her heart but she still held on and continued the attack. Seconds ran by and she felt the power in her dim out and she fell into darkness and lost all senses but a part of her held on the attack until she was lost completely.

Ojoade saw the witch attack Akanni and he tried to help but he was already weakened by his last bolt. He saw that she held on even when her skin was beginning to break and he understood what she was doing. He knew she was making the enemy weak enough for him to kill and so he did not join the attack. He watched her eyes close and soon her hands caught fire. The fire spread to her whole body and it was engulfed in flames and Ojoade knew it was time to play his part. He flew a little above the ground and raised the Ose. For the first time that day, clouds gathered as he prepared a lightning bolt.

The burning body of the queen was still attacking Akanni until she blew up with a huge force and Ojoade lowered his hand and pointed the ose at Akanni. The result was the most power bolt of lightning he had ever summoned. Within his body he felt the lightning and he knew it was more than anything he knew. The lightning was god-like and he knew it.

The bolt rushed down from the clouds and struck Akanni squarely on the head as the whole surrounding was filled with screams from Akanni and Ojoade out of pain and from Lekan who, all the while, was rooted to the ground out of fear then Ojoade fell to the ground slowly as he lost consciousness. His fall started increasing as just as he was about to hit the ground, he was taken by a pair of hands.

The hands felt weak but it was supported by an external force. Ojoade looked up and saw who the hands belong to and he could only make out part of it but did not need anything else to tell him that it was his son, Babatunde.

Akanni felt tired but he knew he was still strong. Perhaps strong enough to take in the old man again and with the witch dead, he will find it easy to take him too then he could go somewhere to regain his strength. He would have had his revenge against the village and he was particularly glad when he saw the old man falling to the ground. Obviously he had tapped into a source of strength that was too much for his body. He turned his gaze towards Lekan.

“Now it’s your turn and then I will finish the old man”

He saw the look on Lekan’s face change and he almost smiled but Lekan did not look scared, he was not even looking to him, instead he looked confused and Akanni looked towards the direction of Lekan’s stare and saw a young man carrying the body of the old man.

Tunde went to the ground with the body of his father and held on to him. His eyes were fixed on his father, calling out to him.

“Father, I am here, it is Tunde your son. Please open your eyes”

Akanni looked towards the boy.

“So the man is your father, well don’t cry, he is just dead and I will soon send you to join him where he is”

He raised his hand and a huge rock was lifted nearby and went in the direction of Babatunde and Ojoade at an incredible speed. Tunde looked up towards the stone and the stone exploded and was blown to bits.

He dropped his father’s body and walked towards Akanni.

“Why did you have to kill him?”

“I have no reasons to do things boy, I do them because I want to and that’s final”

Akanni pointed his right palm at Tunde and fire erupted out of it and engulfed Tunde. The fire burnt for barely 5 seconds and then stopped.

Akanni looked towards Tunde and saw that his body was not normal. His skin had an outer layer which was transparent but was there. It was almost as though a spirit wrapped itself around Tunde and he sent another fire towards him but the same thing happened. He could see a shield form around the boy and within the shield, at the space between the shield and his skin, little strands of electricity formed. The strands went from his skin to the shield making the shield thicker and it began to form a blueish coor which was visible even to Lekan.

Akanni took a step back and attacked him again but it had no effect as he saw the boy raise his left hand and pointed it at him. Akanni heard a rumble in the clouds above him and lightning with the intensity of the one that Ojoade sent last ripped through them and came rushing down towards Akanni and he screamed.

The lightning was just a short burst but Akanni felt the energy present. It was either this boy was a god or he was birthed by one. He spoke a spell as several pieces of rocks rose and were ignited immediately rushed towards Tunde but they barely got halfway before exploding and the look on Akanni’s face showed fear.

Tunde pointed towards him again and another of bolt ripped through the sky. Even the air itself seemed to wince in pain as the bolt travelled down and struck Akanni. The bolt did not just come as a burst but continued flowing as water would do.
