Nri priest, I used onitsha and anambra generally because I have never heard those names outside of both places. . . And I've travelled extensively in igboland. However that does not mean I'm claiming those names are limited to onitsha people.

Igbo bu ofu!

Hi,
I'm the orginal poster. So happy it's still going strong.
My husband and I named our son (born in 2011) Jonas chineyerugo.
And we're now expecting a little girl, so I'm after girl Igbo suggestions.
I'd like something traditional but not over used - if that's possible. Lol

Do you mean as in Linda (Ikeji)?

If so, 'Ikeji' is a name that is generally born by Aro people. It is given to people who were born around the time of Aro New Yam Festival (September) which is known as Ikeji. If this helps with the pronunciation, it's 'Ikééji' while 'strength has' is 'Ikéjì'.

Thanks a lot, Yes I meant like Linda Ikeji.

Actually there is some similarity between yoruba and Igbo, but that is for another thread

Thanks again

ISIOMA- does not mean favour, it means - 'beautiful or good beginning'. It is usually given to first born females because in igbo land, having a female child as first born is considered lucky.

CHIKELUE: means 'God made me whole or complete'.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by beautifulOnyi: 2:18pm On Jun 27, 2012
ezeagu:

Put what meaning? I gave you the only translation on the internet for 'Chidebelu' and it was 'God willed it' the same as 'Chidelu', if you don't want to accept it then fine, don't start talking about putting meanings into anything.

All your translations are wrong, so why should I listen? You talked about most of the translations I made being wrong, yet you could only point one out, what sense does that make?

Chidelu- God wrote/willed/destined
Chidebelu- God kept

This is an internet Igbo translation discussion that was why I used an online source instead of claiming blindly. The second name can be different if taken out of its origin and it can still mean Chi wrote or willed. Igbo words like this without the tones are useless if they aren't well known.

I know Ikeji as I ké ji - tying of yam to stakes. But it can also be interpreted as the above.

The more popular way of saying God kept is Chiedozie. Names are all about how they are interpreted by the namer anyway.
