hi, quick question @ all. i often find myself stuck wit dialup as my only means of gettin online esp on travels. so i need my pc suite 2 connect my fone. hw do i install my pc suite? or even beta my .exe files? i hav some stuff am into like football mgr. av not seen .deb versions n google has not given me answers. hw man wan cope wit? esp d dial up issue anyway |

4llerbe: First they is no Nokia PC Suite for linux, Nokia doesnt make one. However there are ways to use your phone as a dialup on linux without a pc suite. The Ubuntu network manager is really good and might just work out of the box. connect your phone and select the carrier, put your username and password and it should work. if not then you can follow a couple of guide i have written here http://ubuntunigeria./category/connectivity/ about your football manager , again football manager was not ported to linux (along with many major games) there are some cool linux games. but linux is not known as a major gaming platform |

I neva missed nokia pc suite, am not an avid gamer but i play some games at times and mostly do it with wine and it works most of the time with no sweat and some stubborngames will work with tweakings wine like copying .dll file in wine's win32 folder or editing some text etc check www.winehq.org if you're a gamer. And i dont care bout popular windows softwares cos i dont use em. Cheerio |

thanks at all, i got onto the wine and other softwares part. but the reason i raised the issue is like under windows u cant use dial up on some networks unless u use pc suite to enter the apn in the connection. as in thats part of the networks authentication. of course u can always use the the network wizard 4 others. i dont think ubuntu's dial upwizard has that authentication thingy does it? anyway its a minor problem,i just have to shell out for a card i guess. but its annoying to have to pay 4 internet not much better than dial up when i can hiaaj then dial up f.o.c. but its possible for the pc suite to work under wine  hope it does. |

As 4 me wine has neva workd 4 me but i stil get by sha As per dialup on windows, i've connectd several tyms witout using pc suite, jst use d ntwk wizard & i'm yet 2 c any ntwk manager beta dan d 1 on linuxmint, so easy & smooth 2 use; u cn evn share ur internet conectn wirelesly witout a router( dats almost imposible on windows!!) |

Guys oh! Need ur help seriously!! I was upgrading frm felicia 2 gloria using d safe steps i saw on mint blog; i was almost done but cdnt cmplit cos of NEPA & nw i find it hard 2 sucesfuly boot in2 d gmone dsktp,it logs in smtyms but most tym it givs an error msg & i hv 2 punch in CRTL+D keys in order 2 restat again Pls hw can i resolve dis cos reinstalln i'll hv 2 stat updating all ova again!! Tnx |

lynxnoon: First off Linux is good for many things and i can stick my neck for its stability etc. but upgrade? that is one area i will not touch with a pole. even ubuntu (which mint is based on ) recommend a clean install. which is what i always do. that said majority of people go the upgrade route and say its works really well, just that i always prefer starting on a clean slate , then are ways i can do that and still preserve my user settings and have all my applications back in no time , i have never upgraded before and would advise you go to the mint forum with this problem as you would likely get better advise on how to fix it. |

a clean install is the best way really. for a successful upgrade, a reliable internet connection is a major factor, something our isp here can not guarantee us. i gave up trying to follow the upgrade path for mint7 |

CHEI!!! Men i gess its bk 2 a clean slate den Wel guys is there anyway i can preserve SUN JAVA RUNTIME6 settings currently on my mint? Cos wit fresh install it goes bk 2 java5 & dis wont wok 4 wat i nid it 4 @4llerbe My guy no vex as u can c am hvn issues wit my pc & hv nt hd tym 2 get sm empty CDs Wil do dat soon (jst pray i dnt end up wiping evrytn on my pc) |

The upgrade thing has showed me myself  Then i was trying to upgrade from dapper drake to edgy When something bad actually happened it has finished downloading the files and it was installing it when it asked me some questions which i dont know the answer to and i asked it to compare and bamm there goes my installation.  .I also recommend clean install. Guys am working on a custom version of ubuntu optimized for maths, statistics, and science students generally. It is originally developed for the University were i work. but i hope to share it with people freely once am done. This version of ubuntu is based on jaunty jackalope. and its will be called Ubuntu AUST Edition (after African University of Science and Technology the school were i work and which i developed it for use by our students) currently all is done. but the cd is till at beta and am currently testing it. but its been stable so far. it comes preinstalled with many science educational tools like Scilab, Octave, kile Latex etc. Once am done i hope to distribute it freely. |
