Ah compiling! My fav ish! Umm actually u need some small packages to compile. Unfortunately am not near my pc n i cant rmbr d names. I knw one of dem is 'make'.

Anyway as long as u can get online n download frm synaptic u dnt hav an issue. They are all in synaptic n very small in size, kb

Anyway 2 d koko, if u download source filer, usually there is d instructions on d page. But even beta, when u extract d files into a folder, open d folder, there are 2 files dt are vital, one is d readme file, d other is d install file. Open them with text editor and read, d instructions on how to install and at times run are there.

Now usually if u try 2 compile, n u dnt hav d neccesary dependencies, d terminal will tell u dt it cant find sumtin, so u then sudo apt-get that thing and start over. At times esp wen just starting out it can be icky n annoying.

Generally to install, noob way, after extracting 2 a folder, open up a terminal window, type cd (d directory) dt is cd space folder location.
Wat i usually do is type cd(space) then drag d folder into terminal. Press enter.

Next just type ./configure
Press Enter

U then get a lot of gibberish, if there is a dependency it will say so at d end. Try read at least d last 5 lines.

If succesful, type
Make
Press enter.

Again a lot of gib, if any issues, it will report.

If succesful, u then type
Sudo make install

Press enter. It will do d magic. He he!

Anyways installin frm source is just avoided by pple becos of dependency issues which apt usually takes care of but in my experience, d real koko wares are in source, besides u can even customise!

If dis is not ok, give me till nite wen i get on ma pc n i will give shots n install sumtin 2 demo.

i've bin collecting free ubuntu cds and am not about 2 stop. Even though i prefer kde i still think debian- based
distros do better with gnome - ok i once tried kubuntu myself but that was a while ago (6.06 i think it was) but
since then i haven't had the heart to try it again but on opensuse and slackware i use kde.
Puppy's quite nice though sort of llightweight; nowadays they seem to be thinning off the apps even more
but even then the size of the iso is getting bigger.
why not just download fedora? there's always the risk that the cd u buy will not install completely
i guess u're a network admin since u seem to be looking for network tools that us basic pc usersdon't even know about

I once use OpenSUSE, Fedora, Mandrike, e.t.c i have not seen any Linux that can stand with Ubuntu, it get better always. The problem with other linux distribution is that you with continue looking for drivers for ur hardwares (especially urs plugables). The only driver not available in Ubuntu is Richo in-build card reader for most laptop ( most linux distribution are also guilty too), but i think Ubuntu 9.10 will take care of that.

actually about the drivers that is not actually correct; if you used mandriva/fedora/opensuse with exactly the same or more recent kernel version as the version of ubuntu you're using i can bet you that you will have the drivers too; truth is drivers are tied to the kernel except some "rare" hardware that does not yet have linux support; the main reason why all these brands are called linux is because they all get their kernels from the same kernel source (though each brand has been known to add a few extra customizations). i have been in a situation where a friend who had mint linux (which is based on ubuntu) couldn't connect to a wireless network while the puppy linux i had worked seamlessly - and i've had many people complain about puppy's networking issues. if you get your OpenSUSE/ Fedora/ Mandrake from computer village then don't be surprised when they don't support your sata hard disk etc.

well you've used puppy now; i like it 'cos it's lightweight and i can try lots of experiments on it (i remember in my earlier linux days if i wanted to run a (standalone) program in puppy that i had in slackware  all i had to do was copy the libraries from slackware and it will run - most of the time. if i tried that with ubuntu i will get a serious segmentation fault)

slackware my favorite because its the first linux distro i ever had (i think people usually have a speciall attachement to the first distro they use) - ok the first version i used was basiclinux which is based  on slackware and came in 2 floppies (then i didn't have internet connection and had disk space issues), puppy was my second. if you are not interested in working from command line keep of this distro, by default it starts in the command line - though you can customise it to go into gui mode. i like it 'cos of the flexibility it gives me; while i can and have recompiled kernels locally to use with puppy and ubuntu i'm less nervous about doing so with slack; it's more basic (from a technical point of view) and less customised, i even once configured one on an external harddisk that i could boot from at any time. i know there are specialised tools to help you do so in many distros but try doing it without any of those tools in those distros men you'll sweat big time - in fact just google it up and see how many steps it takes without using those tools. For me slackware gives me what i like about linux - flexibility, control and the task of making it work for yourself increases your knowledge too. One major problem you may hafve with slackware is that it has a very basic package manager that doesn't check dependencies so you may download a program and when u try to run it get a library Bleep.so not found then u have to search the internet to find the library. most distros install the required libraries for u

Arch i only tried this one recently after all bigrovar's comments and i'll say like i did for slack if you don't like command line stay away from this distro it's even worse than slackware in a sense. at least in slackware i download 3 isos, install and have a working os  with gui; with arch you download a small iso and then you have to download (from within arch) the other programs you need includin your X server and ur window manager

anyway this is how i install my oses: most people just follow the installer guide when installing but when i want to install i always make sure i have already prepared my partitions beforehand; i susally use gparted which i can use to resize/move my partitions. ok 4llerbe it's a bit difficult to explain since each distro has its own way of installing but just know that when u're installing linux (unless u're using slackware - based or other less user-friendly distros ) there's a place where you have to choose your partition - if you don't use the default option - the one which does everything for you (which i never use, what with all the distros i have on my pc) and if you have 2 free partitions you specify your main one as / and the other as /home which is where the home will be mounted . Now if you have already installed linux and want to transfer your home to another partition it won't be easy but it can be done; however you will either need to be able to login as root or login from another linux distro. In ubuntu 9.04 to be ab;e to login as root go to system -> administratin -> login window; in the windo that comes up select the security tab and make sure that the "allow the system administrator login" checkbox is checked; now you probably don't have a password for root. tocreate one in the terminal type "sudo passwd root" (without the quotes) it will prompt you for a root password which you can give
now logout and login as root (the username is root). Now the thing about root is that while other users have their home folders in the /home folder, root's home folder is the root folder. Anyway i'm sure by now you already have the partition that you want to make your home partition. suppose you have 3 partitions sda1 for windows, sda2 for ubuntu and sda3 is the partition that you want to use as your home folder; first of all create a folder in /media if you don't already have one say /media/sda3. i'm also assuming you have already formatted the /dev/sda3 partition to the filesystem you want to use (ext2 - redundant, ext3, ext4 or reiserfs) i've never used ext4 or reiserfs but the command to make an ext3 filesystem is mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda3 ext4 would probably be mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda3 (warning the mkfs is like formatting, using against the wrong partition will wipe everything out). ok u've created ur partition; the next thing now is to mount the partition: "mount /dev/sda3 /media/sda3" (without quotes) which will mount the partition in the /media/sda3 folder. now copy the contents of the /home folder to /media/sda3: "cp -a --preserve /home/* /media/sda3" . make sure you use the --preserve option so that the file permissions remain as is. next you have to edit a particular file; type gedit /etc/fstab (remember because you are already logged in as root you don't need the sudo command) in the file that opens add this line: /dev/sda3 (under filesystem) /home (under mount point) ext3 (or ext4 if that's what you used) (under type); make the rest correspond with what you see in the line that has the root (/) mount point. save and close. restart and log in as a normal user. if all goes well you should not have any problem logging in if so in the termiinal type df | grep home; you should see something like

filesystem 1-k blocks used available use% mounted on
/dev/sda3 xxxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xx% /home

if so you are ok; if you were not able to login, logout, login as root type "gedit /etc/fstab" again and put a hash # in front of the line and we will discuss this thing again.


as for the multiboot thing i only install grub on the mbr from my prefered os subsequent installs of other oses are installed to the mbrs of their partitions; after which i open /boot/grub/menu.lst (both of the newly installed diostro and of my preferred distro ) and i copy the line that cooresponds to the newly installed distro and paste in the menu.lst of the preferred one. i know it seems a lot of wahala but once u've done it once or twice it's not so difficult again

whew that was a long one; now u see why it took me so long to reply; and i'm not sure i haven't confused u more

My first distro was Knoppix 5.0: i loved it cos it was just different. and contaned loads of apps.

there truly are many ways of doing the above but what always stuck was the one i saw of just copying out the contents of the menu.lst of 1 distro and adding it to the menu.lst of the preffered boot loader! i guess this does the same thing?

then the part about changing a subsequent /home, that is not sumtin i wanna try, period. id rather start from scratch and do it right, easily. but ok so to figure out in every distro how to specify the home partition, hmmn!!! ok

but truth be told i dont like that installer in ubuntu, for me it gets wierd, moving tabs and colors, i just get confused. often ending up with a part of the hard drive not showing up anywhere!! lol. GUGURU LIKE ME. Thats what i will call my own distro, guguru linux!!!! really, that partitioning tab thing is iffy. i think i get gparted and burn to a cd for that task henceforth. op that interface is better

to the koko, that line about editing fstab, ok cant i use that to mount an external drive permanently too thogh it will be removable? remember when i had issues with an ntfs external drive. the damn thing did not show up anywhere. i couldnt even have done the above magic cos it did not show up, even though i had all those ntfs packages installed! tseew. was gonna format it to fat but for the fact that i had no where to back it up to. it had like 170gb of movies!!!

ok so i have to crate as many partitions as i intend to fill with distros plus an extra for home. resizing an already existing partition is fraught with dangers like in windows shey?

i'll make this quick, there' s a point where you see defaults for some lines and no auto for others;
default means that it would be automatically mounted, no auto means that it won't.
why would u want to put a line in /etc/fstab and not automatically mount you may ask
well for one thing if you've tried to mount a partifion from command line say you try
"sudo mount /dev/sda3" you'll get an error message that "/dev/sda3 is not in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"
to mount you'd have to use "sudo mount /dev/sda3 /media/sda3" basically when u want to mount any partition
without specifying where to mount it linux checks the /etc/fstab file

How do i install Linux Mint . .using a Flash Drive instead of a Bootable CD/DVD ?

I guess d pc's bios has to support booting from usb. Change d boot order to usb 1st.

Format d flash, then copy d iso, note iso image!, itr just a single file, not many o. Do not copy d contents of d cd o! Os'es come as .iso images. Its just dt when u put in d cd, d file mgr lets u c d contents.

Copy d .iso image of mint into d flash, only d iso, plug it in restart. It shld work. If not we see hw far. I do winxp dt way anyway. Neva tried linux.
