^^ hehehehehehe, LWKMD!!

see muyi, google edit grub2 and let us hear word bo!, ur killing me

try ubuntu tweak na and see first, am pretty sure some bright cookie has come up with ways to edit grub.cfg without drama na
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 9:54pm On May 05, 2010
infact am not even thinkibng abt it, forget editing grub, just open synaptic and search for the kernel u wanna remove and uninstall

u berra note the exact name of the kernel so u dont remove ur working/latest ones.

now i remember, thats what i do and it works fine, chikena.
@ muyi, u happy now? the older kernels will be listed as installed in synaptic, just do what u have to do okay!!!!
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 9:55pm On May 05, 2010
OR

sudo apt-get remove --purge 2.6.2x-xx-*

me i prefer synaptic sha, i can see what im doing grin grin
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 10:02pm On May 05, 2010
i decided to take out a few minutes to check, i was right, ubuntu tweak is the koko
get it at getdeb.net. i dunno if 1 for 10.04 will be there, the one for 9.10 will work fine anyways

getdeb.net/updates/Ubuntu/9.10/?q=tweak

else just follow this:

Follow these steps to identify and remove any old kernels.

1 - Go to Terminal and paste the following command: uname -r
It will print the version of the Linux kernel you are running, this is the one you want to keep. It should look something like this: 2.6.20-16-generic

2 - Go to Synaptic Package Manager via the System > Administration menus

3 - Paste this: linux-image-2 into the search box of Synaptic Package Manager

4 - Once you have located the old kernels, hightlight them and right-click then select Mark For Complete Removal then click Mark and then click Apply

The results should show every available and installed kernel. A green box on the left indicates that the package is installed. The only linux-image you want installed is the latest one.

Be careful of what you remove. Ensure that you don’t remove your current kernel, or anything that is not a linux-image. It is possible to break Ubuntu if you remove the wrong kernel.

Your computer and Grub menu should now be free of old kernels.

NB: did u guys burn this thing on a cd or a dvd?

the iso is like 699.48mb, that cant fit on a cd!!

cant share dvds to my disciples o, even my test machine sef does not have a dvd rom, how una manage?
Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 12:34am On May 06, 2010
4llerbuntu no mind me jare. its kinda annoying at times when they take a perfectly fine piece of software and mess it up in the name of improvement. anyway sha, as for your first suggestion (uninstalling the old kernel), i have done so before (on ubuntu 9.10) and even ran update-grub on the terminal afterwards but after rebooting, the menu entry was still there smiling mockingly at me. i have downloaded the latest version of ubuntu tweak. i've been using the older version but didnt find the option to edit grub you're talking about. maybe its d new one that has it. i'll install it once apt is free (downloading all my softwares for lucid is a pain on my slow connection). i dont have the problem of multiple kernels yet on lucid as i'm yet to update it (and yes a new kernel is out already). i'll worry about it more when i have to. as for the image, i burnt mine into a CD/RW but it should enter just fine on a CD/R. Cds have a capacity of 703Mb and the image is 698Mb so it fits (except say na fake one you download). :-(

Unless it's for distribution, you can boot from a USB. That's how I've installed all my Linux distributions (including Lucid Lynx) and all windows installations as well. I just use different tools for windows and Linux. For Linux, I use Universal USB Installer (available at pendrivelinux.com), with that you can run a Linux Installation in less than 8 minutes, depending on PC specs, of course.

Ralvy please what tool do you use to make a bootable usb stick for windows? i use unetbootin for linux and it works well so far but it doesnt work for windows images.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Ralvy(m): 2:31pm On May 06, 2010
I use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (available at: store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool)
You can have it download the .ISO or you can point it to the file.

@Ralvy thanks for the info. i'm downloading it right now.
@4llerbuntu i saw the comments on unetbootin a few pages back and i was just thinking that my experience with it hasnt really been that bad. it always creates bootable usb images of my ubuntu and mint. the only time i had a problem with it was when i tried creating a bootalble usb of Mandriva 2010. it just ran for like 5secs and told me it was done but didnt do anything. luckily, a quick google search showed that mandriva had a tool just for that purpose and it even has a windows version so that was problem solved. i havnt tried unetbootin with 10.04 though and the on Ralvy talked about seems more professional.

as for my "bug" wink the last time i tried startup manager, most of its features were missing because of grub2. i'll give it another spin n see if there r improvements.

Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 8:02pm On May 06, 2010
okay so i just finished installing startup manager and although a lot of the features have returned (i can now set default OS and resolution as well as delay time), i saw no option to edit the menu. now that i tink about it, i cant recall startup manager ever having that option even for grub legacy. i always used to do it by editing menu.lst manually.
as for miro, i tried it a long time ago. then it was still known as Democracy TV. it was quite nice. you can subscribe to video streams and stuff like that (podcasts also). slow internet issues did not enable me enjoy it though and it had to go after a short while. havnt tried it since then but i reckon its much better now. you'll still need a reasonably fast internet connection to enjoy it.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 8:19pm On May 06, 2010
been trying ubuntu 10.04? if 9.10 is anything like it i  can see why you're so excited; the thing is wicked
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 8:35pm On May 06, 2010
4buntu what are you talking anout? unetbootin? why are you using unetbootin? if you want to install ubuntu on a flash disk just use the startup disk creator (you will need either the ubunt cd or the image) and if you have enough free space on the flash you don;t even have to delete the files already there; unfortunately it uses syslinux/isolinux not grub but it's not difficult to figure out how to migrate grub commands to syslinux; windows images
@azanor i see you feel my pain; ubuntu seem to have gotten a little stingy with time; now i have to download an iso? well thank God for evdo and 3g sha

so far have only tried lucid on a startup disk; maybe when i decide which os to do away with ill be able to install it on my harddisk

Got it wrong. Startup Manager works great, The Universal USB Installer from Pendrivelinux.com is a win32 app. Unless you're implying that they use Startup Manager during Live mode, but it wouldn't be a logical move seeing that they could just click the "Install" button and get done with it.

several reasons to use unetbootin
1. you have to already have ubuntu installed on your system to be able to create a bootable pendrive with startup disk creator.

2. it only works for ubuntu images (or also mint maybe) and i tend to dabble into the more obscure distros at times

3. unetbootin enables you to download and create the iso in one interface (not that i can use that feature even if i wanted to)

4. unetbootin has a windows version

and so on ,
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:30pm On May 06, 2010
@muyiscol as to using more obscure distros you actually don't necessarily (at least for some distros) need to use unetbootin; in my former flash dribve before i lost it i had puppy (probably the easiest distro to use on a flash drive without a third party tool), mepis which is almost as easy and a funny distro called xpud (so far the os with the fastest boot out of the box that i've ever encountered - yes it boots faster than ubuntu but then it's also lightweight ~100mb ), i also got android booting from the flash before i misplaced it. i admit that perhaps you might need a tool like that to get some distros to boot from flash but many just require copying some files to the flash and editing correctly the boot menu. besides i don't know if unetbootin will allow you have multiple oses in the same flash partition, it didn't the last time i tried but now you mention it, i may just try iit out again, maybe this time i'll be able to figure how to configure other distros to boot manually (i.e. by hand)
Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 11:08pm On May 06, 2010
@blackweaver i dont think unetbootin allows you to have more than one image on a usb device. i came across a tool that does that once but i cant remember what its called. i agree that it will be a plus to be able to do this. i mostly only use unetbootin when troubleshooting someone's system (usually windows) or doing disk check on my /home partition which i foolishly formatted to ext2 so i can view it on windows and it has a habit of getting corrupted. anyway, my point is, i dont really use it a lot and if it doesnt work for the distro, i google for an alternative or burn the image onto a CD/RW. i'll try to see if the distros have a native way of creating the usb bootup manually from now on.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 5:40pm On May 07, 2010
pls why did they remove the test cd integrity thingy?

thats three cds down the toilet now, the damn things actually run live perfectly, when i try installing, the thing fails!!

how can i verify the cds now?

this left sided buttons thing takes some getting used to o, keep on going the other direction, now i settled for using the keyboard.

man but this release is actually fine, ahan the thing is properly integrated, even the installer blurb now works properly unlike b4 when it works for 30 secs and stops and u just bone the screen. grin grin

ehen which reminds me does anyone actually use evolution with yahoo and gmail? i have never been able to get mine to work, ever.
if u have pls show me how o!!
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Ralvy(m): 6:10pm On May 07, 2010
Evolution works for me, configured Gmail yesterday. As for your defective copies, where are you? I have all the versions so I can easily give you ISOs if you're close, I'm in Abuja.
But why don't you even try a USB install like I suggested earlier? It could be your DVD drive.

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 6:23pm On May 07, 2010
my advice; just borrow a flash big enough temporarily, create a startup disk, you can choose to use either your cd or an iso then from the flash you can install; at least that saves you from wasting another cd; will try evolution soon to see if it will work for me too

i've used evolution in the past for yahoo but i now stick to thunderbird3. its so easy to configure an email on thunderbird3. no need to know all the pop3, imap and smtp info. it automatically detects the info and configures it. all u have to do is enter your email and password. it doesnt however integrate with the new messaging menu so that is kinda frustrating. i'm sure it will be fixed soon though.

as for the CD's, in my experience, i have found that most times, when a cd fails during installation, it is as a result of d following
1. it was not burned properly
2. the cd used was inferior
3. the cd was not handled properly and has now been scratched
e.t.c
all in all, to avoid d hassle, a agree with blackweaver and ralvy. just stick it on a usb flash drive. the installation will even be much faster.

Well, Evolution was simple as pie. Configured with gmail and it automatically setup the server parameters as well. Perhaps, an update?

like i said, i used it a long time ago and then, thunderbird didnt also have the features i mentioned in d previous post. i guess it has been upgraded. might give it another shot. if it works well, i'll ditch thunderbird so i have full integration with the messaging menu.

i just wanna be sure of the cds be4 i give them out, personally im waiting for a month before commiting to it, besides it'll probably mean dashing Mtn money now which i aint ready for, no fbt currently on unix, (yf doesnt count, i can count faster than yf can download) grin grin

Before traveled back in time on Nairaland I posted that I had a problem connecting to the internet using my HP 6735s.

I am happy to announce that I have successfully discovered a way out atleast for myself.

I am currently using a dongle (TL-WN321G) to connect to WiFi.

Working well without lapses.

Thanks for your replies to my questions earlier.

This post is direct from my Ubuntu.
