Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 1:07am On Nov 28, 2010
well for me instead of that after installing the java i'd just add the java bin directory to my path :
gedit .bashrc in my home folder then there add the following line:
export PATH=$PATH:/opt/java/32/jre1.6.0_22/bin/
save and then close the file.
the benefit of this method is that i have access to all the files in the java directory not just the java file, the drawback is that if i want java available for all users i'd have to do that in every home folder.
alternately i could do :
sudo ln -fs /opt/java/32/jre1.6.0_22/bin/java /usr/bin/java
which just creates a soft link to the java file in the /usr/bin/folder; but anyhow sha, whatever works for you

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:52pm On Nov 28, 2010
@koolwilly
you mean your modem is still not yet detected?
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:43pm On Nov 28, 2010
ok koolwilly we'll thrash this out once and for all; you say it's seeing your modem as a storage device? that means it's not being acted on by the modeswitch application;
ok type this:
sudo nano /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules

scroll down to the line one line below where you see
ATTRS{idVendor}=="1c9e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1001", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"
and add a new entry:

ATTRS{idVendor}=="1c9e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="6061", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"

save the file and exit;
if your modem is already plugged, unplug it then replug it; the modem should now be detected

basically this is the concept behind usb-modeswitch:
traditionally modem vendors used to include an install cd with their modems, but nowadays on they create modems with embedded storage that include the install software and drivers. Now in windows what happens is the first time you insert the modem in your pc ll you see is the storage device which enables you to install the software and the drivers; subsequently if the software is running, once you plugin the modem it "ejects" the storage device long enough for the modem proper to be detected; in linux, drivers are either built into the kernel or created as loadable modules; unfortunately most hardware vendors don't bother writing linux drivers for their devices, however for the most part linux tends to support most devices; at the very least there's a generic driver that would work; however the kernel module would not have the functionality to eject the storage device which is where usb-modeswitch comes in; essentially the udev program searches the usb_modeswitch.rules file and when it finds an entry corresponding to the vendor and hardware id of your device, it invokes the modeswitch program (or is it script?) on it which does the resetting of the storage device long enough for the modem proper to be detected.
i hope this fixes your issue

After constantly being on the first page under Computers / Internet category on NL for years, i had to go down to page 8 to find this thread. That's too bad. Admittedly, i am also to blame for this. I used to be pretty active on here but recent developments doesnt afford one much time to do so anymore. That doesnt mean this thread should die sha.

4llerbuntu , blackweaver n co, where una dey? lets return this thread to its former glory (or start a new one cos frankly, this one don dey long well well oh!)

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 11:24am On Dec 15, 2010
err, somebody finally decided to dig up this thread!! grin grin grin

wellz, what can i say, it gets kinda weird when u talk to ur self on the thread all the time.

i think we should instead ask dem mods to let the thread continue to grow. they delete threads when they get to 100 pages, but in this case, their is a wealth of info and how to on this thread that i would be sorry to miss, i have even had to come consult solution i posted myself for people. these stuff are'nt easy to come by u know!

anyways, wats new? news info?

yeah, and i heard canonical is trying to start a dictatorship, mint team are simply being dumbasses, spreading FUD and badmouthing ubuntu all over the linux world. its now that they know ubuntu is bad, yet they have been building on ubuntu for years simply cos they trying to start their own independent release based on rolling debian

as in i dont even understand how anyone wants to have a noob friendly desktop os based on debian testing. they even market it by saying all u need is one install, u can continue updating for years on end. please why would i wanna do 900mb updates every month?

and canonical with this their unity/gnome3 brouhaha sef. gnome project is feeling very bitter and abandoned now and boy are dey spouting shyte about canonical.
even fedora is rumoured to be considering unity too. too bad for gnome project folks.

all in all, whats ur take on this sturvs, whats new anyway.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoii: 12:30pm On Dec 15, 2010
for whatever reason, my muyiscoi account has once again been blocked. anyway, d koko of what i wrote is that, Mint moving to Debian actually makes sense to me cos they would want a unique identity. What doesnt make sense is the rolling release part. As for GNOME and Unity, i wrote a post about them on Ubuntu Nigeria blog. u can check it out here http://ubuntunigeria./2010/12/10/ubuntu-unity-and-gnome-shell/

Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 2:25pm On Dec 15, 2010
@koolwilly first of all, what version of ubuntu are you using? second, what is the model of your mode (check on the body for the name and model number) thirdly, plug it in on ubuntu, open the terminal and type this command "lsusb" and paste the output here. after that, type this command also "usb-devices" and also paste the output here. with those info, we should be able to diagnose and hopefully get it working

I am using ubuntu 10.10, I dont know the model, but it is one CimCom 3.5G Universal Modem.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 3:07pm On Dec 15, 2010
well, my gripe with mint is: if they wanna branch and get a full distro of their own, so be it, but i truly disliked them spreading FUD about how bad canonical/ubuntu was, i mean for crying out loud!!!

i have taken it up with them on their site, and they resorted to blocking out my posts.

ubuntu is bad, yet they released 10 remixes based on ubuntu, all the while claiming to improve it. we shall see sha, shebi dem don start now. they think its easy
Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 3:13pm On Dec 15, 2010
i really wasnt aware about the FUD thing. i think i better google it. Its too bad though. we should all be siblings in the GNU/Linux world. all trying to further the same cause

@ koolwilly, maan that modem is still not working? after all?

u sure u did those sturvs or u just freed dem for being too confusing? maybe u shld get a huawei really o.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:24pm On Dec 15, 2010
@koolwilly all his time and you didn't say anything, in fact i think i'm more passionate about your modem working than you are
anyway let me know if you're still interested so we can try to thrash this thing out once more

as to the mint thingy, well it doesn't really disturb me, i always have like 4 or more distros installed on my lappy at any time so the issue of one using debian or ubuntu or arch doesn't disturb me - so long as they don't switch to rpms

@koolwilly i take it you did the instructions i told you to do in the rules.d file in the udev folder right? now i want you to do something else; first of all, don't delete the entry, leave as is; now restart in windows and plug in the modem; once the modem has been detected, go to device manager (if you don't know how to get there one way is clik on the start button, select run and in the box that comes up type: devmgmt.msc)
now in device manager select modems, under modems select the modem for your device; now doubleclick to bring up the properties dialog then click on the details tab; you should see a a box with something like: PCI\VEN_1C9E&DEV_XXXX the XXXX should be the product id after the modem has been detected;, note that number down on a sheet of paper or something; now return to ubuntu, type: sudo gedit /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/1c9e:1001; first of all save the file as /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/1c9e:6061; now you'ss see these lines:

DefaultVendor= 0x1c9e
DefaultProduct=0x1001

TargetVendor= 0x1c9e
TargetProduct= 0x1001

change them to

DefaultVendor= 0x1c9e
DefaultProduct=0x6061

TargetVendor= 0x1c9e
TargetProduct= 0xAAAA

(where AAAA is the product id that you noted down from windows) save the file, unplug then replug modem; if that doesn't work you may have to restart your pc (actually restarting your hal daemon should work only i'm not sure of how to do that )

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 8:48am On Jan 06, 2011
hey Misaac, happy new year

and happy new year to everyone too.

funny thing is im kinda like looking forward to the next release. im getting tired of the usual ubuntu interface. lol (i know i know, just me man, i have not formatted my pc since 11 October 2010, thats a looooong time in my books.

i guess i just need a new challenge imho, sumtin new.

whats new in our world?

what is going on in open source to get on the tablet wagon. there are quite a bit of them falling outta the sky, hate to see android taking all the shine!
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:07pm On Jan 06, 2011
well android seems to be the "windows" of tablets or should i say extra - large screen phones since that's what they basically are - not that it's totally a bad idea since for one thing phones have better power management than regular pcs.
as far as i know there are 3 oses available for the tablet: ios, android & win phone7 (and i'm not actually sure any device runs this os); i know google plans to release google-chromeos for the tablet (i for one wont be buying any tablet running that, i'd rather go for the ipad - and i'm not an apple fan) so at least for now the players are still limited but i think apple is still leading
Re: Ubuntu Linux by EvilBrain1(m): 11:35pm On Jan 06, 2011
Greetings people! Been a while.

New question. I just got myself a playstation 3 and an HDTV for christmas. I'm now thinking of turning my old desktop into a media server so I can stream movies and music to the PS wirelessly using DLNA. Most people I know use windows media player or media center, but I don't want to reinstall windows.

What's the most hassle-free way of doing this in Linux? For those of you who've done this, which program did you use? I've heard of Moovida and MythTV and google suggested a program called PS3MediaServer but I've never tried any of them before. I'm hoping to set it up this weekend, but I don't have much time to experiment (my office has been killing me with work.)

I'll appreciate any help.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 1:27pm On Jan 07, 2011
hum, cant be of much help.

but you know, i do believe the latest release of XBMC has that functionality, plus its ease of use and absolute wide compatibilty with whatever and wherever.

anyway, what ever you do pls let me know, id be interested in setting one up too soon.

but in my case id like to add the ease of wireless streaming all over the house say 120 square feet. trying to decide what hardware would achieve that, and even worse, stream live satellite tv too instead of using cables for that (has the added advantage of being able to dump shows onto a storage media for later viewing)

tall order, but thats what the challenge is about, thats why we use linux eh?
