shacore: Pls house, am graduate of computer engineering, I have one year Experience in web design and other IT related field. Is it possible to get a well paying job in the IT industry have tried applying online but to no avail. Wud like to come over and try my luck. I wud apprciate ur advice..thanks.

Anything is possible but honestly it will not be easy. There are many indians and Chinese in Dubai and they excel in your field. Also, you do not have a lot of experience.

Olayinkaoj: Sirs/ma,
1. What are the easily gotten jobs or readily available jobs for Africans in UAE if one has degree or not?
2. What is the average pay per month when converted to USD for the available jobs on the average?
3. How soon can one get the least rated jobs, at least to start with?
4. Which type of visa is advisable for someone who is coming to hussle to obtain and how much?
5. What other advantageous information can you give to any desperate job seeker from Nigeria to UAE?
Answers to the above shall be of great help for me to prepare.
I am male, graduate of Agriculture, 3rd class, 1994, PGD 1998, married, father of 2. I have been to Dubai on holiday when my business was okay, but now grounded. I am desperate to do any job now, even if it's Labour job in Dubai.

First of all, edit your original post and remove your contact details before just wise helps you to remove them grin

1. The readily available jobs in Dubai are the same as in other parts of the world. These are menial jobs (security, construction workers, maids, office boys, etc)

2. Can't really say. Some security jobs pay 2,000 AED, some pay less than 1,000 AED and I also know a lady working as a sales girl earning about 4,000 AED. (do the conversion yourself biko grin)

3. Again, no one can determine this. Even these jobs that are supposedly easy to get are not just laying about waiting for someone to come and pick them up. You have to network and pray and apply a lot too. There are Pakistanis and Bangladeshi more than willing to do these menial jobs for half the salary the average Nigerian man will want

4. Someone coming to hustle should not be concerned about the type of Visa but should concentrate on getting a good job offer. Not just accept anything at the mention of Freezone company or reject anything at the mention of "labour" zone.

5. Please do not be deperate. It is desperation that pushes people to accept any kind of job and then later they start regretting and complaining. Do not take it as a do or die affair. Also, take a week to read through the whole thread. Everything you want to know has been mentioned repeatedly.

Does the employer hold your passport?

Please don't get confused. Freezone visa is not something that can be "applied" for.

There are Freezone companies in Dubai. These companies are established under special laws and do not need to have a local Emirati partner, are restricted in the kind of business they can do, etc. Persons employed by such companies have free zone employment visas. Therefore, before you can have a "free zone visa", you have to be employed by such a company or you set up a free zone company yourself(more for investors and not job seekers).

Hmmm, okay. So the koko is to get on ground and look for job. The type of visa you get will depend on the type of job I suppose. Are there recruitment agencies that specialise in getting grad/associate roles?

Really. You mean all employers hold the passport of foreign nationals working with them. Not just having a photocopy or something

Usually the party line or official comment from employers is because they think it's safer than employees looking after their own property after all, you might lose your passport, or forget to take it out of your trousers when you wash them or feed it to the dog or whatever. grin

What is apparent to many workers though, is that companies want to have a degree of control over them and holding on to passports is a way of forcing employees to stay in the country to make it difficult for them to abscond ("do a runner"wink, and generally to reinforce the authoritative nature of the employer-employee relationship that is prevalent in the UAE.

I take comments about illegal passport retention with a pinch of salt. Some employers even threaten and intimidate workers sufficiently to make them nervous about trying to reclaim their passports.

90% of Employers hold their employees passports and am lucky to be among the 10% that are with their passports because my Boss is fantastic kiss kiss

Note: You cannot hold an Expatriate's passport oh, grin, na countries like you know na cheesy and mostly low paid jobs.

As for menial jobs...chaii if they see way to cut your face and keep sef with your passport they will oh. lol grin

Not all. I am with my passport and I am waiting for the day my employer will ask me for it….hell will freeze over before I release it angry angry angry lol

But seriously, Justi4jesu is right. Most times its the lower level employees that have their passports taken especially those that can easily be bossed around. I think it is actually illegal for an employer to hold the passport.

Wow. This is serious. This is eye opening. I don't think I can be comfortable with any employer keeping my passport. But as you said it's only limited to menial jobs right

I never said so ohhhh..lol

Everything depends on your Employer and Nationality.

UAE law says the employer and/or sponsor is responsible for the employee and have to keep their passport? The bit about responsibility is sort of correct but the passport retention requirement is soooo annoying.

It's normal in the UAE for companies to keep their employees' passports. As it happens, it probably is. But "normal" does not equal "right" or "legally permitted"

Whether office or menial jobs, Your employer decides if he wants to keep your passport or not.

But as for menial jobs dont even dream that they will leave your passport with you for 2secs cheesy cheesy

@ ALL,
I intend coming over by Dec., and a friend is encouraging me to get a three month visa. Please I wish to know if the airlines are also issuing three month visa. My friend has also offer to help me get the visa through an agent in Dubai, but I would have loved to do it myself. So, I will appreciate any info on how to get the three month visa. Waiting for your responds. Love you all.

Thanks monchouchou, I could start as an entry level employee right? Even though I don't have much experience. Am hopeful to gain enough experience for better benefit/job or promotion. And also would love to know how safe and reliable is it to use recruitment agencies in UAE. Thanks for ur response. I gladly appreciate.
