Governors who are members of the new All Progressive Congress (APC) party, say they will position and pride themselves as social democrats, with free education as their leading programme. The 10 governors, who come from the former All Progressive Grand Alliance, the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change, met in Abuja today where they rolled out their programmes under the yet-to-be registered APC. There are 11 opposition governors in Nigeria and all of them, except the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, were present. They are: the Governor Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), (Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Rauf Aregbesola(Osun), Tanko Almakura (Nasarawa), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe) and Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara). Almakura, who spoke on behalf of the governors, said that the programme priorities in the new party will be agricultural development, jobs creation, free education, affordable healthcare, infrastructural development, adequate power supply, eradication of poverty and corruption, and rapid technological advancement and industrialisation. “We shall pride ourselves as social democrats that are committed to organise our society based on the values of justice for all and individual freedom where everyone’s basic needs are fulfilled,” he said. He also announced the formation of Zonal Contact and Mobilisation Committees, which are headed by six of their members. Almakura himself will head that of North-Central; Fayemi, South-West; Yari, North-West; Okorocha, South-East; Geidam, North-East; and Oshiomhole, South-South. Also speaking with reporters, Oshiomhole underlined his commitment to the merger. “I am fully convinced about the need for this merger,” he declared. “There is no question about my conviction and my commitment to the merger.” Okorocha also insisted that although there are problems in his party, APGA, the party was committed to the merger. “Let me say that APGA is in the merger talks. We have our little challenges and we are just trying to sort out about who are the APGA-APGA and who are the APGA-PDP. “But I can tell you that the APGA-APGA (the real APGA) is already in the merger talks. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/apc-governors-implement-free-education-okorocha-confirms-%E2%80%98real-apga%E2%80%99-part-merger |

Instead of foolish, stone-age, bone-headed policies like this, these idiots should find a way to make banks give student loans. Education is way too cheap in Nigeria and this is the reason our institutions cannot survive on their own without government handouts. Education is expensive and any system of free education is just not sustainable. |

Education is expensive and any system of free education is just not sustainable. While your write up makes a whole lot of sense, its not implementable in Nigeria, a few reasons include lack of appropriate data eg majority of youths have no means of identification, lack of ready employment to absorb graduates, hence no repayment of loans and no return on investment and finally poverty level of Nigerians, need I say more? Plus you heard them say they are socialists. So maybe we are making a U-turn from capitalism for the mean time. |

I wrote this on my facebook wall before the 2011 election, and I feel it is in order to repeat myself. "Whether you vote for Good or Bad candidates, we shall collectively rip the benefits. Nobody would ask who you voted before selling goods in the market to you" So for those willing to continue trying the same thing without success, goodluck to you all. |

I will support anything/ party/ personality that will make our society and citizen better than the current state we find ourselves. . My observation is the "FREE EDUCATION"how free can increasing the school fee paid in LASU by over 1000 percent in college of Medicine and a little lower than that in other Faculties) they are selling to the electorates (Hope the article is not the handiwork of those that are afraid of positive change in Nigeria); IS LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY now in TOGO that the current students (those that were admitted from 2011 ) must pay as high as #196,000(Arts and Education) and as high as #348,000 (Medical students). . Kudos to the ACN and LP governors that made a downward review of their respective state Universities when power changed hand from PDP governments of the said states to the current ruling parties (hope they will sustain it because if it raised maybe after their re-election, i will have to conclude that their actions were to win people's confidence for electoral gain). . I cited LASU as an example because the school fee was raised from #25,000 for staylites and #35,000 for Freshers (lowest among the state universities that I know and lesser than what some few federal schools Freshers are paying) . We need not to be cajoled by any politician again but I WISH THEM well if this alliance will make my DEAR country rise to her full potentials. . God bless Nigeria with good and great Leaders and "active" followers. |

I know what I am talking about because I have a first hand experience of it. Many of my colleagues who graduate same time with me in university here in the UK ended up with debts from student load as high as £20,000 to £38,000 from undergraduate to masters degree which will take them nearly 15years to repay! God forbid we subject our people to such dreadful policy. Nigeria has the money to provide free education from Basic to Technical educational training, even up to Tertiary education level. We need a visionary and discipline leadership who can harness the wealth of the nation to safeguard the future of the yet unborn. 2 Likes |

Maybe you should break it down per course and then you would realized that in actual fact, you are paying peanuts per course compared to even those in Ghanaian universities. |

Being encourage by bro. Tinumbu founder APC GROUP OF THIEVS.That is a very big lie, i my self finished from LAUTECH Ogbomoso and i know what we paid under AD party and it was increased by 1000% under PDP, after i graduated from the school i know what the pdp lead administration proposed for the new tution fee which lead to strike in both state particularly Osun b4 the two ACN governors steped in and reduced it. In Osun state university the amount of school fee was close to 200thausand by PDP governor (Oyinlola) b4 ACN(AREGBESOLA) reduced it to less than 100thausand even the tution fee of polytechnics and college of educations were jerked up by several 100% by same PDP governor while ACN reduced it. I don't know of lagos state owned institutions but i believe that no matter how Lagos state may increase the fee, with the instances i gave u in OSUN and OYO Pdp would have jerked it up more than that. So my friend stop saying what is NOT TRUE. |
