@ YOGUN AND RAYMONDENYI

Discount houses are specialised financial institutions which primarily intermediate in money market transactions. Intermediation means acting as a go-between. Money market transactions are dealings in various short-term securities offered in the money market - the market for short-term lending and borrowing (and, as you would probably like to hear it, short-term investments). Securities and instruments traded in the money market include the Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTBs), Nigerian Treasury Certificates (NTCs), CBN Open Market Operations (OMO) Bills, commercial bills (like Bankers Acceptances and Commercial Papers), bank deposit certificates, etc. Because discount houses have a special focus on these securities, there is no doubt that they have a deeper understanding of that market. They also have the training and experience to deal in those securities.

SERVICE AND PRODUCT PORTFOLIO
Individual operators in the sub-sector may have their unique product bundles, but our focus here is on the general activity areas of discount houses, especially from the perspective of what non-institutional parties can participate in. Some key areas include:
Treasury securities: discount houses are primary dealers, appointed by the CBN, for Treasury money market instruments: NTBs, OMO Bills, etc. That means that when you want to buy fresh Treasury Bills, for instance, discount houses are there to help you out, just as banks could. Since you are not permitted to bid directly for these securities, you can only access the market through these appointed dealers. Because of their key role in treasury securities intermediation, discount houses are also among the 15 financial institutions appointed primary dealers/market makers for Federal Government of Nigeria bonds. Though bonds are not short-term market securities (earlier said to be the domain of discount houses), discount houses are approved to deal in the primary market bond auctions as well as the secondary bond market. Simply put, when you desire to invest in Treasury (government) securities, discount houses are major players you can approach.
Liquidity Management Products: The money market deals in short-term securities considered generally liquid. Discount houses consequently trade in and manage largely liquid assets which can support your own liquidity management. They, in particular, structure such investment tools as Open Buy-Back (OBB), which implicitly afford the investor a lot of liquidity management flexibility since they can be redeemed at short notice, without the rediscounting cost of Treasury Bills. So, if you seek both investment security (from treasury securities) and liquidity flexibility, these are products you need in your portfolio.
Asset Management: Discount houses do provide asset managment services, with a bias for money market and treasury securities. Just as you could invest with other fund managers, a discount house can also manage your money market portfolio.
Like banks, discount houses can also provide advisory services. With trained staff to run their investment desks, you have everything to gain from seeking guidance from these market actors. You not only learn the workings of the market in the process, you can also get advised on how to run you portfolio. Besides, you can gain access to a lot of beneficial market tips by dealing with active market players.
Capital market subsidiaries. Yes, your are likely to find that a discount house has a leg in the capital market, albeit through a subsidiary. What that means, in essence, is that your money market and capital market (stocks, bonds, etc) investment needs can all be tackled under the same umbrella. That could bring some flexibility, especially in switching assets and funds.

I do my Treasury Bills investment via my banks. However, I will like to know the main reasons why someone should go for Discount Houses instead of buying through the bank. What do I stand to gain if I use a Discount House. I know they are important to the Nigerian financial system but my worries are with their supervisory and regulatory bodies. Just as SEC is to the Nigerian stock exchange market, is CBN the regulatory body of these Discount Houses? What if you give money to a Dicount House for T-Bills investment and your account officer or someone in the house dissapears with your money or use it for something different, as it happens with some Stockbroking firms, will CBN or the Discount House guarantee the safety of your investment funds in this case? Please someone should enlighten me. Thanking you for your contributions.

Please visit First Bank their minimum for Treasury bill is N100,000 and the pay discount upfront. Discount houses are okay and well regulated I especially like Kakawa Discount Hse(their Guarantee Income Fund-50,000 minimum) though I also invest with First Bank Capital.

keneri: All these investment vehicles will only "preserve" your capital in a best case scenario. Inflation, however, will devalue your initial capital outlay. Nigeria's inflation rate is very high and will obliterate whatever interest your investment might accrue. Better put it into business. If you just want capital preservation, then, that's way to go. If you want capital growth/wealth, look elsewhere.
where else?

As stated by many, real estate and bonds would be the way to go.

yinkaoke: I have an idle fund of about 300K and am contemplating on where to invest, I need some advice though I have the following in mind

Treasury bill 150k
Bond 100k
shares 50k
Mutual fund ?

I am investing low in shares to hedge and take some risk which could fall on either side. If negative then my returns on the fixed instrument can cover up. OR WHAT DO U THINK HOUSE?.
I could also invest in mutual fund but from my review of price history on Stanbic IBTC asset management website, I observed this is not a good time to buy mutual fund as the prices are high, so I will wait till year end or early new year when the prices are always low according to record anyway.

If any one has a contrary view pls help me out with prove.

NAIJAFUND..THE FIRST NIGERIAN CROWDFUNDING PLATFORM DEBUTS

For some of us, we know but for many other people, do not know what crowd funding is all about. It is a concept where a project/idea is funded by a number of people who believes in such an idea whether for profit or not.
This is a new concept being embraced in the world right now to fund businesses. It is a concept which will really help many people in Nigeria. Talents abound, ideas abound but the complaints most times is that there are no funds to finance such ideas. In a country where the percentage of youths that are unemployed is skyrocketing every year, it is imperative for such platforms to exist where coordinated attempt as to raising money is available.
Unlike other developed Nations where the level of trust is high with the users, we have a level of trust too in this Nigerian crowdfunding but protection of investors or funders are of utmost importance which is one of the most important factors taken into consideration. As an investor, you are to an extent very safe in commiting your funds for a venture either profit or non-profit.
The site is administered by seasoned business consultants and business developers as well as Non-Governmental personnels who can screen NGO projects submitted at the site while the former screens the profit making ventures/projects/ideas submitted to the platform. I am also a member of the admin and my large following on my thread speaks volume coupled with my experience as a business developer and an author of a sought after business ebook through nairaland, linkedin and so on.

I therefore welcome you to www.naijafund.com. Sign up today, start posting your projects, start funding businesses and start making your dreams and other people's dreams to come true.

Who knows you might be funding the next Bill Gates or funding the next facebook.

You are free to ask questions please....Have a nice day!

Thanks for showing interest to read this post.

I wouldn’t want to waste your time, but I really think
you should read every single word right here… it will greatly help you.

You know almost everybody keeps saying… ‘‘I need money for
this or that’’… but when they say such things, the main thing now
boils down to what they are going to give in exchange before they get the money.

Money comes to you ONLY when you give something valuable in exchange for it.

Let me tell straight up – if you want to really get/have money, you MUST
exchange a product/service for it. And that product/service MUST be one
that solves a problem, satisfies a want and/or fills a need.

Read that last paragraph again and pause for a second to really think about it.

Are you done?

What did you figure out?

Write it down immediately…

Once you’ve done that… then let’s continue.

Truth is… if you want to REALLY get/have money… YOU MUST SELL SOMETHING.

As a matter of fact, ALL money is made by selling either
a product/service. Life is all about selling.

Every famous person in the world today has something
to sell – musicians sell their songs, authors sell their books,
actors/actresses sell their acting skills/abilities, footballers sell
their skills, politicians sell their ideologies e.t.c

Since almost every one is selling something, the question
now is ‘‘what are you selling?’’

And even if you are selling the product/service you want
to exchange for money does it REALLY satisfy a want, solves
a problem or fills a need?

See my dear friend making money is simple if you
understand how it works.

Another important thing here…

Before you even plan to ever sell anything at all, there MUST
be a particular LARGE group of people who REALLY wants that
your product or service – massive demand for that product or service.

And also they MUST certainly have a proven buying attitude.

In a nutshell, if you really want to stop being broke and always
lacking money or what ever your financial condition is right now, if
you can get the money making concept that I’m trying to pass across,
trust me you’ll NEVER ever worry for money again.

Here are three simple steps that will help you REALLY get
this money even though you are broke right now… but you
must be able to understand it and then go on to apply it PLUS
you must stick with your guts until it works…

- Find out a particular want, need or problem faced by a particular LARGE group of people – they are all around you.
- Once you done that, find out if these people REALLY want a solution (a product/service) and if they have a proven buying attitude - if they can afford to get the solution.
- Sit down to plan and come up with a straight-to-the-point valuable product/service that will solve that problem, fill that need or satisfy their wants… and price it at an affordable fee and offer it to them.

Now you see those three steps above, can you do yourself a favor
by looking around you to see those big time successful businesses, organizations,
companies and what have you to check if it’s still not the same principles or steps
that they use and are still using today.

The telecommunications companies used it.

I hope you know by now that success s not a 100 metres race… it’s a gradual stuff…

So whatever you want to do, make sure you have a long term plan…
stick with it and make it work for you… and trust me it will definitely work.

Do you know what I want you to STOP doing right now?

Stop waiting for the government to create jobs… forget about them.
You can employ yourself. I don’t have to wait for the government to come
and put food on my table and pay my bills… it’s solely my responsibility…
I’m solely responsible for myself and so I should get up and get creative
to do something reasonable with my life.

I know that for so many people starting a business could be challenging…
but many people who are financially successful today are people who have
taken the risk, pushed their fears aside to start and build successful businesses…

A job can’t give you financial security.

For 3 years now I’ve been into teaching people how to really get out
of the rat race and really live a life that they really desire financially.

What I teach people is how to use the information marketing business
model to satisfy wants, solve problems… and probably fill a need.

And I’ve been doing this via eBooks, audios, videos, seminars, consultations
and one-on-one coaching.

And seriously, if you can sit down to learn and put in your time with consistent
efforts into what I’ll teach you… truth is you’ll make it.

I’ve put together a very straight-to the-point report on how you
can put together a simple report that satisfies a want and solves a problem.

And one special thing about this report is that you can use the MASTERPLAN
contained in the report to really pull at least N50, 000 within the next 30 days if you are serious.

N50, 000 is an average amount because you can really determine your

account by using this system).
