The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a Non Government Organisation, has called for tolerance on the controversy concerning child marriage.

MURIC’s Director, Ishaq Akintola, made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan.

The statement said that in conformity with the tenets of Islam, age was not part of the conditions which must be met before marriage could be solemnised.

It said that where the bride was a ‘minor’, Islam prescribes protective solemnisation of marriage to shield the bride from abuse.

“This means that the girl who is deemed to be of tender age is left untouched by the man until she attains puberty.

“Another major condition for child marriage is that the girl herself has the right to repudiate the marriage when she attains maturity if she does not like her spouse.

“MURIC believes that honourable and dignifying child marriage is better than child prostitution which is rampant in Nigerian cities and red light zones,’’ it said.

The statement compared the globalisation and promotion of homosexualism, lesbianism and same-sex marriage as a direct challenge to God’s divine order.

The Senate, on the recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee, rejected the deletion of the clause on renunciation of citizenship.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, said that the clause was recommended for deletion because it was considered discriminatory.

He said the clause, which had been in the Constitution since 1979, had nothing to do with child marriage as was being insinuated by some Nigerians.

Do these children marry boys within the same age grade with them? Abi old men marry small children come dey give excuse of waiting for them to attain puberty before molesting them, mscheew.

If you are 50 and marrying a girl of 15, you are a criminal and should be arrested, shikena.

I have problem with the bolded part, really after already being used by someone old enough to be her Dad or after having wasted the prime of her life giving birth, am really surprised at some people level of thinking

so I can go outside and give anybody I see on the street a dirty slap because after all a dirty slap is better than killing that person?? I do not think so - both of my actions would be wrong. Let our conscience guide us in making these decisions. Let us not accept one action over another simply because it appears to be the proverbial "lesser of two evils" undecided

You Mr MURIC. You are not every man. When a man is sexually hungry, he even rapes his wife; wether by mutual or non-mutual consent. So you cannot say when that man who married a 'minor' would seek her consent after marrying her legally.

i dont knw where u ppl got dis ideology dat its only men of like 40 years and above dat can marry dem. Most of d tym, dey are ususally bethroth to their mate or someone dat is older than dem by like 8 to 15 years old.
Even d traditional worshippers of zuru LG in kebbi state practise d same thing.

oh really? And who's there to protect the girl from the man(beast) if he decides to eat the 'cake' at an earlier time before puberty? What's the comparison of the might of a girl say-12 or 13-with that of a 30 to 70yr old man?
In any case attaining puberty isn't a sign of maturity. So saying he'll wait until puberty isn't a solution to d problem. Leave children alone you filthy scum.nonsense

By God's Grace I am a muslim and I am forever grateful to God for being a muslim; however I am very very disappointed and ashamed of the actions and inactions of some of my so-called muslim brothers and sisters. How can any sane human give any reason to support child marriage. This MURIC Director should tell us how many of his daughters got married while in primary school. If this so called MURIC Director is sure of what he is saying and he is ready to defend it, please someone tell him to come and ask for the hand of my under-aged cousin, niece in marriage, he will come and tell Nigerians the outcome of such evil demand.
