Just musing - is there any possible connection however small to the unfolding situation in Ethiopia with Ethiopian governments stance on the Renaissance dam not too long ago A regional militia managing to gather the firepower for a near conventional warfare against the better resources of a national government 8 Likes |

Nemesis4you:The problem is with first principles: the Tigrayans are neither regional nor a rebel militia. Ever since they overthrew the Dirge and Mengistu, they've been running Ethiopia until they put Abiy Ahmed in power, when he turned against them. They are right royal arseholes, and so are all the parties in that conflict. The Egyptians would love to stir, but all Ethiopian sides to the conflict are nationalists who believe in the GERD. Far more interesting will be what Eritrea - and its sponsor the UAE - does. East Africa hasn't been this interesting since 1885. https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-11-22-four-scenarios-and-the-funerals-ethiopian-powder-keg-is-ready-to-explode-in-tragic-ways/ 3 Likes |

Learn to look deeper at photos! On the surface this is off topic but looking closely you can clearly identify the better force. A Brit para with an Argie POW. If there was a war on this planet the instigator SHOULD have won it was the Falklands war. So many strategic and tactical blunders were committed by the Argies you'd have thought GHQ Rawalpindi was DIRECTLY advising them ! The battleground was on their doorstep making logistic support MUCH easier and they had the all the time to prepared for P2P conventional manoeuvre warfare yet failed so miserably the war is studied in military academies as a case study on "How NOT to FK up on the Battle field." - their Air/Navy/Infantry failed to coordinate ops resulting in lack of follow up after the Argie Air force sank 3 RN ships badly damaging another 3 -despite the short distance from home bases they were poorly supported logistically - the Inf though well dug in, simply sat in their foxholes and emplacements waiting for the enemy and the Paras, Marines, Welsh/Irish Guards and Gurkhas obliged and routed them inflicting heavy casualties - cold weather gear was lacking - Britain had 2 carriers, the Invincible and Hermes and had ACTUALLY agreed to sell the latter to India when the war began but formal handover was a few months away Back to the pic: observe closely. The POWs laces are improperly tied like a civvy. The buckle is non regs as is the sweater, likely looted from a home. The pic declares the winner. 3 Likes

Nigeria has indicated the interest in buying assault helicopters ......from Russia, the fear of sanctions from the USA has put a damper on things, Nigeria will turn to TURKEY because it presents a sanctions-proof alternative ...... if they can prove they have fixed their engine problems. |

Nemesis4you: Imo, yes. Most people under estimate Egyptian feelings over the Nile: to them it's an EXISTENTIAL CRISIS. IIRC, Boutros Boutros Ghali, ex UN head even threatened to go to war over the Nile treaty in the 2000s. EMW01:Yeah, I thought about it too when I saw the pictures. But the 2009 move was a cluster fvck, , there was no structure, we just trained ppl and sent them back. But this time there is a legitimate govt with its own structures and has been fighting the enemy for some time now. And what choice does KDF have. If you listened to the CDF of KDF interview on how the recent maritime ruling by ICJ will affect KDF operations and relations in Somalia going forward .. you could deduce that his thinking was right now Alkebab is the real and current enemy ... It's better to deal with an aggressive but legitimate and conventional state/nation than ragtag militia that will use any means necessary to achieve their goals including targeting civilians. 3 Likes |

If true, another reason to be wary of the China debt honey trap. Home - Dailytrust China To Take Over Uganda’s Lone International Airport Over Failure To Repay Loan The Ugandan government has lost its most important airport to Chinese loan….... By Abdulyassar Abdulhamid Fri, 26 Nov 2021 13:40:58 GMT The Ugandan government is on the verge of losing its major airport to China for failing to repay a loan. The government has failed to reverse a loan agreement with the Chinese which had repayment conditions of attaching its only airport. Entebbe International Airport and other Ugandan assets were attached and agreed to be taken over by Chinese lenders upon arbitration of the loan. According reports, President Yoweri Museveni had sent a delegation to Beijing hoping to renegotiate the toxic clauses. The visit was unsuccessful as China authorities refused to allow any alteration in the original terms of the deal. The Uganda government, represented by the finance ministry and the Civil Aviation Authority at the time, had on 17 November 2015, signed an agreement with Export-Import Bank of China (Exim Bank) to borrow U$207 million at two per cent upon disbursement; with a maturity period of 20 years including a seven-year grace period. The deal signed with the Chinese lenders virtually means Uganda “surrendered” its most prominent airport to China. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) said some provisions in the Financing Agreement expose Entebbe International Airport and other Ugandan assets to be attached and taken over by Chinese lenders upon arbitration in Beijing. The rejection of Uganda’s plea to renegotiate the toxic clauses of the 2015 loan has left Museveni’s administration in limbo. According to the Daily Monitor of Uganda, the Ugandan government waived international immunity in the agreements it signed to secure the loans, exposing Entebbe International Airport to take over without international protection. Last week, Uganda’s Finance Minister Matia Kasaija apologised to parliament for the “mishandling of the $207 million loan” from the China Exim Bank to expand Entebbe International Airport. “I apologise that we shouldn’t have accepted some of the clauses,” Kasaija told members of the committee in response to questions asked by the legislators. There were also questions over the interest rate that was set by the China Exim Bank for the funds placed in an off-shore Standard Bank account that was used as collateral for the project. Built in 1972, Entebbe International Airport handles over 1,9 million passengers per year. Editor’s note: This story has been modified to reflect that China is on the verge of taking over the airport |
