“Military infrastructure at Ukrainian army air bases has been rendered out of action,” the defence ministry said in a statement carried by news agencies, which added that Kyiv’s air defence systems were “eliminated”.

Chief, the Cuban 1961 missile crisis comes to mind. If Ukraine is allowed to join NATO today, the possibility of the United States having military bases in Ukraine is 90%. Kiev is approximately 800km from the Russian border. That's a threat to the Russian Federation existence.
We all know the US. They don't mind their business. They like poking into the internal affairs of nations of the world. If the US is in Ukraine, it will be only be a matter of time before the US starts sponsoring movements to topple the Russian government and destroy the Russian state as we know it. The likes of Navalny will spring up in Moscow. Russia will then be ruled by puppets. In that stage, war will be unavoidable.

The Americans are hypocrites. E.g.They cannot let allow Mexico join something like a Warsaw pact or allow the Mexicans to be Pro-Russian but they want Ukraine to join NATO in the name of "Freedom". The Cuban missile crisis showed us that. Russia has to invade because it's threatened.

These are legitimate security concerns.

Anything, ANYTHING is possible! We're in a global geopolitical terra incognita. What was once unbelievable now passes without notice. Did you see the Saudis massive defence deal with Russia last year?

[
https://www.heritage.org/defense/commentary/russia-and-saudi-arabia-are-getting-closer-america-should-worry

You know the implications on the petro dollar ofc.
In another unprecedented move the Pentagon is ignoring the Fiden (sic) team completely !

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/20/biden-pentagon-transition-460768

Mid last year China lost a secret air war with Taiwan and now US allies are keeping the latter at bay in the SCS. Last week Russian assault ships entered the Baltic sea alarming the Swedes.

Part of the difficulty in interpreting these moves is identifying the exact players: eg which faction is responsible for China's Himalayan brinkmanship with you guys? Is it a united Politburo play? PLAAN hardliners undermining the latter? Or Xi Jinping and a clique of these forces with their own financial and political agenda?

I really didn't expect things to go hot in the Ukraine. While I know there's been a concerted effort among certain Global Elites to eschew the use of force an opposing faction only knows force. They're addicted to the traumatisation of innocents and know no other way of doing things! Also they're not about to let their weapons production lines stay silent while Russia earns big from the Nord Stream 2 gas pipleine supplying Europe cheap gas.
The MSM isn't showing much on TV. I've no info on the op apart from this. Putin can't allow NATO to control the Ukes for obvious reasons-what the endgame is is unclear.
Edit: the 3000 US troops sent to Poland are no more than a speed bump in the face of full scale armoured spearhead combined arms invasion. They're too lightly armed to be anything but a tripwire.

Thanks for being civil. The "hate" between Nigeria and SA is holding back the partnership which these two countries need to forge to bring Africa to limelight. If you turn the African map to the side it looks like a gun with Nigeria being the trigger and SA the muzzle. These two countries need to work together in every area from Telecoms to Banking to Military. We should have all types of pact...economic, industrial etc. Now back to the matter at hand...rather than "waste" money buying from the Ruskies or the Yankees(and their younger siblings) we should assist Denel to open another production unit in Nigeria...have a TOT which will help speed up our growing aviation industry. This would be a win win for both Countries and foster closer ties. The helo is a capable one and can be further improved upon...Nigeria is fighting a war and this helo can be used and based on combat information new additions can be made which would definetely help further design of this helo......It is an African thing and we should be proud of it. My 20 cents......If i was President that is the route i would take.

Nigeria doesn't need SA so go fck yourself grin

Meanwhile, in the DRC.

"Republic of South Africa Battalion (RSABATT) deployed under the umbrella of the United Nations in the Eastern side of the Democratic Republic of Congo, were ambushed while on escort duties.
The RN4 road connects Ituri province to North Kivu province. The vehicles are escorted by security forces because of the presence of armed groups along this regionally important road.
Republic of South Africa Battalion soldiers was ambushed while escorting civilian trucks from the Luna checkpoint to Banwansura checkpoint as it is the responsibility of peacekeepers to protect cargo vehicles.
Allegedly Allied Defence Force (ADF) rebels tried to cut the convoy in the middle, by attacking the middle vehicles. Young lions of the SA National Defence Force under the Leadership of Lieutenant C.D. Ramphele responded accordingly to protect the civilians and their comrades in arms.
At least eight armed groups members were killed during the shootout, unfortunately, three civilians succumbed to injuries. Four AK 47 assault rifles have since been seized with 18 rounds of ammunition. "Train as we fight" proved to be the key to winning a firefight, as South African soldiers came out strong with no fatalities.
Lieutenant Ramphele said, "the first thing that came to my mind when I heard the first bullet from the armed group was Dash, Down, Crawl and Fire."
The insurgents, who have lost most of the territory they once controlled to soldiers, have thus shown they are still able to carry out skirmish attacks."

We already know the impact rising food prices can have on the north African countries. Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya import most of their grain from Ukraine.
Below them, Ethiopia and Sudan might also find themselves in a spot of bother.

I thought the turbulence in Ukraine had already been priced in, but watching grain futures today, it's going to be a white-knuckle ride for all 7 countries.

This is the biggest take away from this conflict. However for small nations what options do we really have?

A small country has to pitch sides with a larger neighbour.

It was daft for the Ukrainians to ask to join NATO, I don't support this Russian invasion of the country, but better, smarter decisions should have been made.

What's your opinion about this war?

From an African, specifically Nigerian perspective, this conflict shows the need to invest properly in modern military equipment.

You might have all the fancy roads, bridges and infrastructure all you like. All it takes for all that infrastructure to come down is a properly timed cruise missile.

Sadly all the countries in sub-saharan Africa have very weak militaries.

MRAPs and Armoured vehicles don't win wars.

The lesson is simple; don't weaken you military to gain popularity votes like Ukraine leaders did.

They had 770k soldiers in the 90s, the 3rd largest nuclear arsenal in the world and thousands of tanks.

They gave up the nucles, shrank the military (even though they had a constant threat from Russia) and then allowed their hardware to be outdated. This was all in the name of social and infrastructural programs.

See what they got now? This is the same problem that could happen to my own country as well, too much social and useless infrastructure programs eating up on defence money.

They did not give up their nukes, the weapons belonged to the USSR and Russia had the keys to all nuclear bombs in the USSR, so technically those nukes always belonged to Russia.

This conflict shows that if you don't have the money to spend on your military, align with the closest military power to you.

It was a terrible mistake asking to join NATO, and if the scenario was turned around and the US and Russia were to switch sides, the Americans would do the same thing.

Russian SEAD missions today were incredibly effective though.

I will say South-Africa is at least geographically safe, Nigeria on the other hand is completely surrounded by France on virtually all sides, plus the Nigerian military is a joke.

We might be strong to deal with local African wars, but an invasion like we are seeing in Ukraine by France and we will collapse.

Ukrainians from the beginning made foolish decisions

How could they overlook their geographical proximity ie vulnerability is beyond me

If one is weaker one must never incite the immediate next door stronger neighbour bec his one foot is inside ur home already , u will definitely suffer

A nation which is militarily and economically weak should never ask for or trust any guarantees of protection from other countries bec no nation however powerful will risk its own for a weak nation unless it itself is at risk next

Ukraine should have instead concentrated on building up its military and local MIC while engaging west for economic growth , after that only it should have done anything which would have allowed it to stand on its own feet against any aggression

Their leaders were too jigniostic overlooking ground realities as to where Ukraine stood with respect to capabilities to deter any aggression, banking on so called support from West or anyone is height of foolishness

I don't support Russia in this bec of the ramifications of their actions will interest replication of same by other countries , only country to benifit in all this is china, Russia will wither away gradually over the years and end up as a shadow of china bec of huge sanctions

If china tries to replicate Russia and Taiwan falls , Japan Korea will scramble for nukes and this will cascade worldwide

If ind.. gets attacked 2 front another Pandora's box will open

No a small country need not pick sides , it depends on them , if they r clever enough they can manage

IMO Russia made the first step to digging it own grave which is unfortunate , they will now never be able to break out of Chinese grip unless something drastic happens

I mean a small country on the border of a big country has to pick the side of it's bigger neighbour. You simply can't be neutral.

I too think the Russians made a huge mistake by invade Ukraine, they were options short of an invasion that could have deterred the Ukrainians.

I agree with the rest of your comment, and I also think Russia has dug it's economic hole.

True
In that case unfortunately one will need to pick side all said and done but also depends on the country ability to manage within that too, that's what I meant by tyranny of geographical proximity

My take is different

How much weapons will u buy ? that will guarantee u security , it will never be enough bro

( That doesn't mean one should not invest , imo what one should do is invest in local MIC )

Biggest need is economic might and well being of citizens , which allows for diplomatic might, military might and might of nationalism

Spending on military without spending on infrastructure is harakiri , in that case own citizens will turn hostile or exploited by enemies to win without firing a single bullet

Don't get fooled by events they are misleading due to erroneous perceptions , we see only a small part of the picture which interests us , hence we miss bigger picture

Eg in the context of current events Russia will loose to china going forward ie became totally dependent on them , what did Russia gain by invading Ukraine ? land ? Which it already has in abundance but cannot exploit ( Russians in Siberia is outnumbered by Chinese 1:10 as of now) threat of NATO will remain , NATO is not disappearing post Ukranian invasion is it

Nations with weak military's in geoproximity should band together for mutual defence imo.

I mean invest in enough military hardware to have a sizable deterrence. A good example is Algeria. They seem to have a good balance.

Should Taiwan be attacked today, what happens? Like I pointed out earlier, look at Nigeria's position in Africa, almost completely surrounded on all sides by France.

In the event that the country is attacked today, what happens?

While economic prosperity should be the focal point of every country, countries need to also have a decent military.

NATO would be mindful of expanding towards Russia post-ukrainian invasion.

This is the point for this military invasion.

Algeria has strong military but it is also vulnerable ( for solace to algerians, same with ind.. actually worse )

Neither can replace attrition loses if war stretches which a enemy will try to stretch knowing fully well the said vulnerability, than both are done for ( cannot comment on other countries , but ind.. will get ass fuked grin )

Taiwan attacked will lead to large scale scramble for nukes bec USA will never risk itself for other countries , it's guarantees r worthless

And this will open Pandora's box which will never shut down again

IMO France will never attack an African country as in with a direct full scale invasion, the cost to benifit is not in favour of such action , you do know how many Africans are french citizens or living there , How can they risk their wrath / internal strife ?

IMO what they might do is intervention or rather piggybacking on internal enemies , preferably indirectly , their interest are mostly economic by hook or by crook , not territorial bec they do not have the capacity or resources to hold the same beyond a short time and bec of domestic risks as i mentioned before

But human stupidity knows no bounds so if by chance France does attack , will be able to damage infra etc but beyond that doubtful except for a busload of new enemies

Threat to African countries will be those in geographic proximity ie neighbours either alone or with external help but if world order changes than can't say anything is possible including foreign invasions from beyond Africa ( same for any continent more or less )

Economic prosperity will always lead to strong military

NATO ( or the individual EU countries ) will now become even stronger , post USSR NATO / EU countries almost became useless except for France

Russian stands to loose more in my opinion with time , well time will tell
Good read

I disagree....Not the fact that African countries shouldn't invest in modern equipment BUT your notion that Nigeria should invest based on the Ukraine-Russia conflict for fear of "cruise missiles" and/or invasion..........None of Africa's 4 regional powers have the power projection capability to invade the other and only China, USA and Russia have the capability to launch a meaningful and sustained invasion across the ocean.....

Nigeria should continue focus on a more COIN based approach to procurement like it has lately hence the success against BH.

Do you know why Julius Malema was kicked out of the ANC after calling Botswana "US puppets"?

It is because as weak as our neighbours are but if a country like Botswana could feel threatened, it would give the US or foreign power the legitimacy for a permanent military base... If you ask any SA military general, they'll tell you that any foreign nation that could stage a war from Botswana could match to Pretoria in a matter of hours, it's the shortest of all the routes to the capital.

So yes, our neighbours are weak but they could be used by a foreign nation in a worst case scenario.
