I agree the opportunities are in abundance when you go for it if you complain about tribalism you will come here and complain about racism. I grew up with white jewish people and have mostly worked with them my whole career. California is very liberal compared to the South where I went to the University, I have experienced racists remarks, but I have experienced more s*xism then racism, in the corporate world. I have a very open personality and I see good in everybody, if somebody is miserable I feel sorry for them and keep away. My worst experiences have been with my own people, hater-ism undecided

Lol u are living the american dream by paying that tax fr ur income.

Phuck the American system, why do I have to pay taxes on foreign income because of who I am? Now you see why I don't blame Apple, Walmart and many other corps that don't bring home their monies because after they have paid taxes on the money, when they return the money home, and used for investment, it gets taxed twice.

My cousin came to the United States in the early 1980's . Dude worked as a janitor while attending college and later married a white lady for papers. He remained focus and went ahead to become a Surgeon. Part of his hobby now is to buy land from people that are in dying need of money in Owerri. I doubt he knows how many properties he has. Most of his secondary school pals in Nigeria are employed by him in Lagos. He owns a gigantic warehouse in Lagos.

nwanna89: My own opinion:

There are only two things a nigerian can do in the US and have a slight chance of succeeding:

1. Go to school in America, get work authorization, and get a good job. (there is less racial discrimination in employment of highly skilled labor like engineers/doctors)

2. Go into trade. A lot of nigerians especially in texas do this. Trade such as resturant business or african store business.

For anything to work for you, you MUST have work authorization.

I met a young man in a nigerian restaurant in houston, texas. He was working there and had no papers. Therefore, his madam paid him whatever and whenever she wanted. He has a wife and child in nigeria. His mother died, and could not afford to send money back or attend the burial. He too dreamed of a better america. But to be honest, unless he gets lucky, the highest job he will get is a cab driver job.

Number 1 applies to me. I got several job offers as an IT engineer. After a while, I dropped number 1 for number 2. Wholesale african goods imports.

Therefore, my advice to people, if you are not educated enough to land a job in US, DONT move there.
If you cannot obtain work authorization upon arrival, DONT move to america.

Dont envy that your uncle or friend who comes back to nigeria every 5 years with a jeep. All na packaging! grin

There are better opportunities in Nigeria. If we nigerians living in nigeria work half as much as nigerians living in US, we'll become millionaires.
Exactly. America doesn't recognize foreign credentials. Go to school and get a good degree. Come back here after you get your degree and tell me what it's like.

Well, it's one thing to work hard and it's another for a "programmed system" to hinder you. In the true measure of wealth in comparison to "America", how many Americans or even Immigrants are DOING WELL? Granted you earn six figure salary (tops $250,000) which is next to none, yet you live from paycheck to paycheck. Your tax bracket is very high, the system here has been set to drain everything in you.

As for the Bank Manager in Nigeria, exactly my point, what kind of job where u expecting him to get? To be a bank manager here, you need to get certain license and certifications to sell investment security products which requires proof of documentation to start the process. Under FinCen Regulations as well as other regulations, they need to undergo serious investigation. Again, what type of job do you expect him to get?

My point on the banker is, staying back in Nigeria. Of course I know he can't be working in Capitol Hill or treasury even though currently there's no money in it smiley

The longest I've lived there was 2 years and its not hell as I was thinking so why is everybody running away.

If Nigerians can spend the amount of money and time to improve their own, it won't be as bad as this. Now me I'm running away, at least, one more space for a Nigerian Immigrant to take my spot. There are fresh opportunities for me in Nigeria.

My friend who got hit with a $20,000 + tax penalty and he's been crying foul since beginning of this year. Yes he makes $40.50/hr as a social worker for Fairfax County here in Virginia, he has more than 20+ years of experience, go ask him about savings, dude has NONE. Yes he has a great job, but as soon as he earns his money, it goes this way - Condo and fee ($1,950), Electricity ($150), Car Insurance ($280 for his two cars), and the list is ENDLESS. Abegi, I'm tired of this place jare...

ozo_emeka: One thing Nairaland has taught me; I have learned that so many Nigerians living in Nigeria want anything BUT Nigeria. Some make it a lifelong MISSION to come to America where they "believe" it is the "LAND OF THE FREE" and "ANYONE" can make it. These Nigerians save and save and hustle to DO ANYTHING to come to "America" / Yankee. They give up EVERYTHING they ever had or knew to come and "enjoy" greener pastures (or so their TVs informed them). However 5 years into staying in America they realize that Life was more manageable than they could ever imagine in America. Here are some pointers on the REAL AMERICA, to those living in America feel free to add in.

1. America is NOT FUN when you do not know anybody. If you are coming here "on your own" and THINK you can easily "settle down", think again. You need an address at the airport and almost everything you need to do here requires an address. Ekene your "guy" from primary 6 can only allow you stay in his house for so long before he will require you to pay rent. Tosin your paddy from Lagos is not going to be your guide forever which leads to the next bit

2.Nothing is free in America. Absolutely nothing. DO NOT expect Okwudili to give you a ride to work, he will ask you for gas money. You are either going to join Okwudili in "hustling" or get your own life, which you will learn is HARD especially for immigrants.

3. Life is toughER for Immigrants in America. From not having a SSN to get jobs, to people simply discriminating for your "accent". You will LEARN that America is not the least bit tolerant for immigrants. Especially if you come to places that are predominantly white. Unfortunately what I end up seeing Nigerians adopt is the "akata" way. A LOT of them end up trying to speak ebonics and they just sound stupid and ridiculous. "nigggaz is tryna hoop yo". No. Your azz never hooped before when did you become a "niggga tryna hoop"?

4. Dressing. Appearance is EVERYTHING

These are NOT, repeat, NOT "american" dressing. The earlier you learn the better. The "americans" who dress that way are SEVERELY DISCRIMINATED AND MARGINALIZED in society. Sure you may say, well the "wealthy" american hiphop stars dress that way....Guess what. Those who do are DISCRIMINATED against. Don't believe me - check...a lot end up in jail etc. The "REAL wealthy ones" a la Jay z and Sean Combs DO NOT, dress that way. A word is enough for the wise.

5. You learn quickly that America is NOT the land of the free and get crammed up with "the rest" so 5 years in you start to fight hard to PROVE you are not like "THEM". You get mad when people say you are "black"

6. The America on TV is NOT the same as the REAL America. The skyscrapers and beautiful scenes from Tv shows and movies are just in a few places. Downtown, NYC, Miami, LA, DC. Just like you have SOME VERY beautiful places in Abuja, and Lagos. The real america, sometimes looks like this

(this is actually a GOOD picture of NY) ask

Miami
MIAMI

Los Angeles
LA
Oakland California
Atlanta

Washington DC, couple blocks from the White House, you can see this mess from the white house

One question
Where do you live?
Please tell us
I live in the USA and I love it and will not discourage people by painting those pictures
Where do you live I ask
If you don't live in America you have absolutely no grounds to scare anybody by posting pictures off the Internet, some of buildings that have been vacated, ready to be torn down after the residents have been relocated by the government
I will speak from years of experience
You are talking rubbish
America takes care of it's own
Take that assertion to the bank honey

Unfortunately, developers are relocating the black neighbor hood to other states so that DC can be of standard, but for me, that's not what I'm about. It's only someone who's ignorant and can't read the signs that times are changing.

I defo agree with you that America is not what it seems. The Government is currently shutdown because the so called Republicans are so adamantly against the Obamacare that will provide for the category that doesn't fall within 1% of America...which is very absurd imo. Their greediness is driving people that work for the non essential services to go on unpaid leave. Being a black person in this country seriously means you have to work twice as hard to be half of what a white man is. The whole saga of gun violence... I agree with all of that... The America people see is just the sugar coated story. u have to be in here to understand what is really going on bla bla but saying that all those ghetto places is the real America, I dont necessarily agree. Yes, places like that exist but also saying "downtown America" isnt real is so false.

I think that's smart. The successful Nigerians I know are looking for how to migrate BACK TO NIGERIA

manny4life:

You sef, the way you blow your own story na wa o...

Nigerians may be intolerant in accommodating their own people, but it doesn't change the fact that America isn't what you see on TV. A lot of folks are deceived by the glamor and tall high rise building neglecting the fact that this country works round the clock. The real wealth doesn't belong to the average American, it's a group of people that control it. There are tons of depressed places and people here in the U.S. so again, NO America is not what it seems like.

God I cannot wait to get the hell out of this country and only come every summer just to see how others are suffering and smiling.

They came with Capital which most Nigerians in Nigeria with bright ideas don't have. If you look very well, majority of Nigerians that are living the good life in Nigeria, works for foreign firms. These are firms that originates from same country hypocrites amongst us despise.
