Really, did you read his post? he said in the DC area. And your example of Michigan is way out of proportion, Michigan where winter last 6-7 months? Now who is really the arrogant?

I lived in Michigan for 2 years, my gas and electric bill was on average $50 - $60/month even during winter so what was your point?

Even if he lived in the DC area, do we know what the size of his home is? Do we have data on what type of stuff he has in the home that may contribute to his average monthly gas bills? Perhaps he lives alone? Until we know precisely what he has so we can make relevant comparison, your noise about how much you pay is irrelevant.

Are you serious? what you just said isnot accurate, in the US its either you pay the taxes before or after. Now you can take the risk not paying but if you get caught you would pay 5 times what you ought to have pay. there is no forgiveness in here.

Dude, please ask questions before jumping into conclusions. Employers have retirement or savings plans that are tax deductible meaning that before your money is taxed, money is set aside from your pay and that money isn't taxable. Even supplementary insurance I believe that cover prescription medication cost, medicine, therapy or other medical cost etc are tax deductible. You set the money aside and it's not taxed. In DC, there's something called "SMART BENEFITS", this is a rail transit plan where the employers move a portion of their employees pay to their smart card. Up until last year, this was tax deductible. So again, this is how I mean and what I said is ACCURATE and TRUE.

Thank you grin

where do you pay electricity $45 a month? my monthly electric and gaz here in MD is between $250 to$300 a month . even when i was renting i average $150

Ok bros, you and I have different saving mentality.

My electric bill here during the winter months is about $45 to $55 because I wanted it like that. Fortunately I pay only electric, every other thing else is included in my rent. During summer months, I'm judicious with electricity and my bill comes at $85/$95 monthly, $110 (at most which is rare). I'm not living in America to pay bills, if you want to know how I conserve, just ask.

lol i had to scratch my head. If you're paying $300/month on gas/electric then you need to be seriously looking to either downsize your home or conserve unless you earn $250,000/year. That is just unnecessarily wasteful.

I live in a 2-story home myself and my bills are just a bit around $100 for gas/electric simply because i am very mindful how i use my services and i am quick to change providers should they jack up their rates.

Even if you earn $250k a year, $300/month is excessive. That's $3,600 annually, that's too much for me o even if I earn $250k, after taxes say (25%), you're left with $187.5k. That's about 2% of your pay used to pay electric and gas... Abeg that one too much o.

So am I, VERY CAUTIOUS and mindful, my people say ejiro akpata etufuo aba ogalanya (you don't become rich by wasting earned resources). grin grin grin

Babyosisi has made valid contributions and has given good advices. Ogugua88 (year of birth, 88? So a fresh perspective,no? ) has made good points too.
Yes when you come over here, everyone will push healthcare. But even that is getting saturated don’t believe me. Well just take your time and click on this links. http://allnurses.com/nursing-career-advice/rn-bsn-cant-881771.html

Dayo is right, most stations and companies would rather hire a young blonde, blue eyed female/male. But many mass.comm graduates can still work behind the scenes. Some get a master’s degree and teach in high school/cc/colleges. Some work with Multinational companies as events coordinators.

Some Engineering Graduates are doing way better than the nurses, even if it means working offshore in oil rigs.

IT, is a great sector especially if you are willing to work full time and enroll in your local CC and continue to advance your knowledge/skills by getting certifications (4-16 weeks for about $1500).

For the science majors, clinical research careers are available.

For business graduates. Yes an MBA from an ivy league will open doors but even public university graduates can make it. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505125_162-44441221/want-to-become-a-wildly-rich-ceo-dont-go-to-harvard/

To move up, you must have a good work ethic ,a great can do attitude and leave whatever bias you have.(buy baby gifts for your gay boss that just adopted a baby)

Many people live in a 2-storey home with basement and dont pay the ridiculous amount you pay. The high cost is solely your choice. Its all a part of the nigerian mentality - they think high cost = how wealthy i am.

dayokanu: Nice one Osisi for opening this thread

I would advise anyone in Nigeria who wants to come to US to do so, Its truly a land flowing with milk and honey if you know what to do.

First of all come with a mind of going to school and learning new skills, Be flexible, Have an open mind and not a defeatist attitude

I came to US in 2008 August and I can only thank God for the opportunity. I have several friends on this same Nairaland whom I met here that came around 2010 and are doing verrrry goood

I know 3 of them who comes to visit me regularly and we talk all of them make between 75k and 110k a yr, The three of them came in 2010.

America has been good to me and I would advise anyone with drive to succeed to come

NB: I had an excellent job in Nigeria before leaving and still havent regretted any day of it

Dude, If your friends don't have papers, even if they have PhD's they wont make jack..... the primary thing you guys are missing here ( before throwing figures around) is if you don't have papers here (GC or Citizen), you are just on borrowed time.

It is tough to think of coming here without knowing anyone at all where you can come to initially.
I don't know how you will do it.

Okay o, but having kids in the house shouldn't really jack your bill up... #JustSaying. I have a family member with a husband and two kids as well, they live a house in Alexandria, same scenario as you and heck she don't pay no more than $180 monthly in her bills. Don't ask me how, but the last time I asked why, she told me that she hasn't payed no more than that amount.

Do you know cooking and turning on appliances in peak time electricity jacks up your bill?

Do you know that increasing or decreasing the thermostat from two degrees apart can increase your bill by 1%?

Heck you may change your appliances to newer ones "energy efficient" ones, spend about $3k and get a new stove, refrigerator, washer/dryer units etc. The amounts of energy you save can translate into saving hundreds of $$$ annually and will pay for itself in less than 3yrs depending on usage.

These are just basic conservative rules to follow, try it and you'll be fine.

Yep, not too long a story but came in 9 year ago with a student visa and a bachelors. Spent 5 yrs earning a masters and a phd. Got a job and already converting to a Green card in a few months. Everything came relatively easy for me (thank God). All that counts is to have a goal, stay on the right side of the law and work very hard. America is not as difficult as some make it to be.

Fiancee Visa, married Nigerian American----------Probably Holds a GC already, Will be a US citizen in 3 years Max

Visa Lottery----------- Already holds a GC, will be a citizen in 5 Years

H1b----------- what i call second class or corporate America slavery, hopefully if he doesn't get fired or laid off might get a GC in 5 years.

The underlying fact remains, the paper is primary, the money will follow if you know what your doing.

Am a new bee in Yankee.Been here like going to a year now.I want someone with broad knowledge to reply me and give me advice.I am actually a graduate of English in Nigeria and hope to continue with a masters in Communication. What are my chances of getting admitted and what are also my chances of getting employed after my Masters Program in Communication.I decided to ask this question here because most of my pals are in the medical line therefore they see nothing good and promising outside the health field and I am not cut out for that medical ish cause I believe one can still become a success story even without being in the medical line.Reasonable advice and insights are welcome.

Please don't give up on your dreams, but a Master's degree in communication in this country is great if you are planning to relocate to Korea or China, if you are in STEM degree you stand a better chance.
Good luck
