Is he planning to run this program as part time? He has to be enrolled at the school on his visa full time.
Can u rephrase please?
The school he got admitted for is full time, we'v even paid school fees, but according the brochure and stuffs, classes are most likely to end by 4pm everyday, he plans on using a few hours to run a computer school like programming, according to him he wants to maximize. I had told him he can't do that, but he's seeing me as discouraging.

Oh ok i thought he was planning to transfer to a different school from the one on his visa. If the other venture is part time and does not disturb his fulltime schooling then sure. He can go ahead.

After all said and done, all those who say naija is better than yankee and are still living in yankee are confusing us. If naija is better, why not come back to greener pasture here in naija and enjoy the life?

@ All,

No need for name- calling or negativity.
I have lived in the UK and now in the USA and acquired citizenship of both countries.
I have a lot of experience living in Nigeria, Europe and America, and had the opportunity to visit
few countries in Africa, Asia and Australia. I have been there and done that, as Americans would say.
America remains the greatest country now and likely for a long time as far as economic opportunities are concerned.
America presents you with the good, the bad and the ugly, just like most countries.

Even as a doctor with specialist qualifications and degrees, America can still be tough.
Everyone can make it in the USA, just that you need to take the right steps, study smart (professions in demand) and
work very hard. Give it some years, you will be successful and achieve your goals.
Life is not a bed of roses in America or anywhere in the planet, but America is far better than most places.

God bless u and other well meaning nigerians living in the U.S who took out time to answer questions concerning life in the states, God bless u all.

My question is, how is life like in Canada? If anyone one of u have an idea about life there it won't be bad to share. Comparing Canada and U.S which is better based on easy access, weather, opportunities, obstacles to success, flexible visa e.t.c. Thanks

@babyosisi: good day. I studied anthropology in the university and currently on the verge of completing my masters degree program. I hope to do my PHD in the US. What are the best schools to apply for and what are my chances of getting a job as a lecturer when I finish. Also what is the salary package of a lecturer there in the context of the american society when compared to other jobs

For those clamouring for foreign degrees, it is advisable to secure your first degree in a Nigerian University especially if you're travelling on a students visa. Its preferrable only if you're going for a masters or Phd. Organisation's and companies in Nigeria give little or no value to foreign degree holders especially now there's Job scarcity everywere in Nigeria. The few sets of people employed with foreign degrees are children of senators, Governors and other currupt officials (go figure). Getting a visa to the US also is no piece of cake especially now that the DV lottery has been suspended. It is mostly those in the medical field that secure employment in the US with good pay which comes with very hard work. So wasting too much money just to earn a first degree oversees and coming back to face unemployment in Nigeria sounds funny to me even tho quality education is good. But what's the use of getting a sound education and not putting it in practice This issue has already been discussed here www.nairaland.com/1214926/foreign-degree-nigerian-mentality

Why do you think that employers in Nigeria value Nigerian first degree holders more than a foreign one?

Ozo_emeka and babyosis, I do not think you guys ought to argue or quarrel. You both bring valuable information to the table. America, like most nations would have it good and bad. However, compared to most nations, America provides young immigrants, a better pathway to self sufficiency.

Like ozo said; As a young person moving to the United States, will you suffer racism? Maybe yes. Will you be ridiculed, albeit subtly, for your accent? Yes. You might even be mistreated because of your name. However, if you are focused, confident and you work hard, you will rise above all of those.

Like babyosis said; in the face of theses challenges, you can still succeed in America. But the first question you want to ask yourself is; have I exhausted all my options back home in Nigeria? You see, if you put the same amount of energy you require to succeed in America back here in Nigeria, you might still succeed. However, if you have made up your mind that it most be overseas or nothing, here are some options available to you:

Do not go to the united state with a visiting visa and then decide to stay longer than your visa validity and proceed to work. That is criminal. And while you might not be caught, you put yourself in a very difficult position. Employees will exploit you and you might eventually end up in a terrible relationship because you want a green card. You would have completely ruined your life before you know it. You will not understand me if you are under 25 years but you will definitely understand when you are 42 years, suffering a failed marriage, lost all your life savings and you still can't visit your own kids.

I will advice only those who already have a university degree to proceed. Get in touch with a school (you can do that through their website), obtain an admission with the school and then with your university admission and evidence of payment of fees, you will likely be given a student visa. If you want to do a higher degree, there are usually some opportunities to work part time and study. It will make your stay for the period of study legitimate and you can work as lab attendant, lecturer assistant, security, etc in your school or get a part time work outside your school. I will pause here and ask again, what stops anyone from doing the same in Nigerian universities? Anyways, lets assume you insist on America. Then if you study hard and maintain a good grade, you will be eligible for some scholarship (this is not automatic). Most scholarships will only reduce your tuition cost, they will usually not eliminate it completely.

Seek opportunities for internship while you study, it is a fair way to increase your chances of getting a job. Also seek job opportunities back home in Nigeria. Most multi nationals in Nigeria like to hire Nigerians with foreign degree.

Try and build a great relationship with some of your professors so that at the end of your masters, if you still do not have a job, they can offer you a phd placement under their tutelage and you will usually get paid some allowance as a research student. Even if you are not good at building relationships, just study hard and earn good grades, at the end of your masters, some professors will definitely offer phd placement.

In all like babyosis said, if Vietnamese and Chinese that can't even speak English can make it in the US, why not Nigerians?

My ten cent...

Thank you madam. I m hoping you can advise or you know friends who went through similar thing.

If you are already married, have graduated med school with house job and NYSC,I wouldn't advise you to spend 3 years in Nigeria pursuing a west African fellowship which you are not even certain to get in 3 years.
I know how dem dey chop people witch for that thing.
Whatever specialty you achieve will not be recognized in the UK
You will still start afresh with Plab exams
Nothing wrong in being a general practitioner
Sometimes with marriage, motherhood etc, somethings have to give
3 years is too long to stay apart from the one you love IMHO and as a GP you will still make good money
Go there and do the royal college exams instead
It has more class than the west African college.

davidylan:

You have a good shot at studying environmental biology at the masters level. This is one of the resources i used back then - http://www.gradschools.com/

Search by program and then narrow down your choices by looking at what they offer, cost, available funding etc. Another angle you could explore is Canada. Cost of education is cheaper and you can actually work (after the first year i think) while going to school. Besides, you will be eligible to apply for a Canadian residency permit after schooling for one year. They are usually easy to get as long as you maintain your status as a student. The website i put up can also search Canadian progs too.

Thanks David for the above

For those asking about grad school please hear from someone who got into a program with full fellowship ( scholarship and stipend) from his home in Abeokuta and ended up in the United States now with a PHD and got hired by a company afterwards.
Read through davidylan's posts and see what he did and the exams he took in Nigeria prior to applying
I believe his posts have answered virtually every questions anyone would want to know along that line
