ASUU mobilise members against resuming lectures

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the weekend embarked on mass mobilisation of members not to comply with the federal government December 4 ultimatum to resume lectures.
Members of the union were directed not to sign any register that may be opened by their Vice Chancellors.
The leadership of the union on Friday before departing from Abuja following the federal government riot act instructing them to return to work or be sacked directed all branches chairmen to device means of mobilising their members not to fall for the threats of the federal government.
It described the federal government’s threat as “empty”, pending the next National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Union slated for Minna.
An official of the union who was in the Abuja meeting told our Correspondent that Chairmen were also advised not to hold public congresses in order to avoid any face off with armed military men government deployed to all institutions for the implementation of the December 4 deadline of re-opening.
Our source also said that the date for the NEC meeting fixed for Minna, Niger State capital may not be made public but that the council may reconvene by the weekend after chairmen of branches would have assessed the implementation of the deadline given for resumption.
“Chairmen of all branches are to devise means of mobilising their members not to be intimidated into signing any register or returning to back to classroom. We also resolve not to hold any open congress now that our campuses are militarised but we will ensure that our people are adequately informed.
“Same goes for the next NEC meeting. We resolved not to make public the date but we want all branches to monitor and ensure non-compliant with the federal government December 4 deadline before the council meeting slated for Minna, Niger State,” our source disclosed.
To this end the Union have started using the short message service (sms) and other social media platforms to reach out and to mobilise members not to succumb to federal government threat which the union described as “empty”, insisting that the strike continues.
One of the messages sent to mobilise members stated thus “Dear members, FG decision to threaten us with sack confirms our suspicion that FG may not be honest and can not be trusted. Don’t sucumb (sic) to this empty threat. The strike continues. We shall triumph again. Please, DO NOT SIGN ANY REGISTER. ALUTA CONTINUA- CHAIRPERSON”.
Another message reads, “Dear Congress member, I’m appealing we should stay calm and remain resolute. There is nothing wrong in asking govt to do what it says it will do immediately. ASUU is not making any new demands as the Minister is propagating Govt is only repeating a ‘one act play’ scripted by the IBB dictatorship in early 90s. It didn’t work then, and, it won’t work now ALL BRANCHES are intact. We cannot be intimidated!!! UNITED WE BARGAIN DIVIDED WE BEG!!! ALUTA CONTINUA”.
Another Professor at the Federal University of Technology Minna who spoke in confidence expressed shock at the government ultimatum. “One is shocked by the deadline. If they sack all of us, government will go to Kasua Gwari to pack lecturers or pick Professors on the streets. It is a pity, our leaders are reckless.
“We are not moved by the ultimatum. We are waiting to see how they (govt) intend to wriggle itself out of the self inflicted problem. Do they know how the system runs. The era of intimidation is gone ,” the university don stated.
Meanwhile University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and Enugu State University of Science and Technology have directed students to resume today.

One thing is 4 sure nw and thats the fact that ASUU has won again, wit this new declaration by fg that they dint give the dec 4th ultimatum. The lectures's of cos wont ansa to pro-chancellors being that theres no fg to threaten them,so dec 4 isnt a solutn at all. If another solution is not sought out quickly den we should b looking forward to school again in feb or mar cos evrything is stating afresh again as ASUU claims to have lost trust in fg.

Senior Academics accuse ASUU leadership of
taking Nigerians for granted by unilaterally
reneging on their members vote
Posted by: admin in Education

*Say 41 out of 62 of branches voted for the
strike to be called off
*Say lecturers are tired on continuation of the
strike
An international academic, Prof. Abiola
Awosika has declared that the ASUU National
leadership has failed the Nigerian leadership
and taken the people for granted by throwing
up fresh issues after meeting President
Goodluck Jonathan for 13 hours to conclude
negotiations.
Speaking on Channels TV on Saturday, Prof.
Awosika stated that the sack threat by the
Federal Government is not the very first in the
history of the world, saying that in the 1980s,
former United States President Ronald Regan
declared that if air traffic workers continued
with their strike, they would be sacked;
Americans thought it was not possible. She
said the workers were sacked and the
American society moved ahead.
She said: “Nigerian lecturers voted
overwhelmingly for the strike to be called off
and the leadership of ASUU must show respect
of their views”.
A senior lecturer of University of Lagos, Dr
Adeyemi Daramola declared that the Nasir
Fagge leadership has lost touch with its
members. He said that the position of the
ASUU leadership is un-intellectual, pointing
out that the Nasir Fagge leadership has chosen
to play the oracle, pretending to know it all.
The lecturer stated that it was shocking that
the leadership of ASUU went ahead to bring
new demands not known to its members,
stressing that the members clearly voted on
the MOU that emanated from the meeting with
the President, which he said favoured a call.
“It is sad that as intellectuals that we continue
to go back and forth on issues. The leadership
met with the President and presented key
issues, they must not go back”, he said.
Another senior lecturer, Dr Pearce said all
lecturers want to return to classrooms,
because they are tired of the strike. He said it
was because of the disposition of the lecturers
that they voted overwhelmingly for the strike
to be called off.
Former Trade Union Congress President, Peter
Esele said that he will not support any
leadership that does not respect the opinion of
their members. He said that the ASUU
leadership must show respect to the popular
opinion of their members.
Esele said with ASUU meeting the President,
they should know that they have achieved
enough and have a rethink.

The All Progressives Congress
(APC) has said the sack threat
issued against striking
university teachers by the
Federal Government lays
credence to the fact that the
present administration is out
of ideas in resolving the
prolonged strike by the
Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU.
The party’s Interim National
Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, Sunday, in a
statement released by the
party in Lagos criticized the
Supervising Minister of
Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike,
for the way he talked down on
the striking teachers, while
issuing the ill-advised, go-back-
to-work-or-be-sacked threat.
“Wike’s language was crude,
his presentation was rude and
his threat was demeaning and
counter-productive. We believe
his lack of finesse and the
inability to think out of the box
in handling the whole strike
issue will not bode well for a
quick resolution of the crisis.
“We also disagree with the
Minister’s inference that the
lecturers should automatically
call off the strike because the
President intervened and sat
for long hours with them. It is
this unnecessary deification of
a democratically-elected
President that has almost
turned this President into an
Emperor. What is the big deal
in President Jonathan sitting
with ASUU members, his
former colleagues for that
matter? What is a President
elected to do if not to solve
problems?” it queried.
APC said it is unfortunate that
Wike can be threatening to
sack university teachers at a
time there is a shortfall of
60,000 lecturers in Nigerian
universities, adding that the
threat itself has shown that
the FG does not understand
the enormity of the problems
facing public universities in
particular and the education
sector in general.
“The poor remuneration of
university teachers and the
inadequate facilities for
teaching and learning in our
public universities have
combined to trigger a brain
drain in the institutions. The
pauperization and frustration
of the teachers through the
non-implementation of the
pacts aimed at ameliorating
the situation have discouraged
those who may want to
become university teachers.
Yet, the few who have defied
the odds to take to this noble
path of helping to mold our
future leaders are being
threatened with dismissal.
This betrays a painful lack of
understanding of the long and
tortuous path it takes to
produce a university teacher.
“It also shows that the so-
called Supervising Minister of
Education is not better than
the misguided market women
who, having being hired and
paid to protest against ASUU,
threatened to invade the
universities to chase out the
lecturers if they won’t call off
the strike.
“This is what a country gets
when it puts round pegs in
square holes. It is not everyone
who can mobilize campaign
funds for the President or
organize thugs during an
election who should be
rewarded with a ministerial
post, not to talk of being given
such a sensitive ministry as
that of education, which is
directly responsible for the
future of our youth and of
course our country. No one
who knows the value of
education will toe the path
taken by Wike in issuing his
empty threat,” the party said.
It said ASUU was right in
demanding certain
benchmarks, including the
non-victimization clause and
the need for a senior
government official, like the
Attorney-General, to sign the
agreement, before calling off
its strike, in view of the fact
that the FG has a history of
reneging on its agreements.
“Yes, our party is eager for this
prolonged strike to end so that
our youths who have been
marooned at home for five
months can resume their
academic pursuit. Yes, we
believe this strike has gone on
for way too long, and that it
will impact negatively on our
country’s development in the
long run. But we believe the
issues at stake must be
resolved once and for all, so
that we won’t have a repeat of
these recurring strikes.
“The onus rests on the FG to
work with ASUU to resolve this
lingering crisis. President
Jonathan should get off his
high horse, roll up his sleeves
as Presidents elsewhere do
and tackle squarely what has
now become one of the
biggest challenges facing his
administration.
“However, if the Jonathan
administration has run out of
ideas, as we now fear it has,
going by the infantile threats
being issued by it, then let it
hands off the negotiations and
allow other stakeholders to
find a way out. We are all
stakeholders in the education
of our youths,” APC said.http://
