This particular number is actually used to input details of your vehicle and payment of duty into the customs' database.

INFORMATION SHOWN ON IT INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING

1. Consignee info ( agency handling your job)

2. The means of entry (road for vehicles through land borders and ports for sea)

3. Office of entry (idiroko customs command or seme customs command or tincan port)

4. Location of vehicle and place of discharge(idiroko border/seme border, tincan)

5. Name and address of person/persons responsible for financial settlement (the owner of the vehicle) etc.

What fraudulent dealers do is called MO or machined outside-this is a process where a forger forges the bank receipts and all customs documentation. The documents look genuine but are not in the customs data base.

**** THE CUSTOMS REFERENCE NUMBER CAN BE LOCATED AT THE TOP RIGHT HAND CORNER OF YOUR DOCUMENT. THERE'S ALSO A DATE TO REFLECT THE DATE DUTY WAS PAID AND ALSO STORED INTO THE DATA BY THE ASSYCUDA UNIT OF NIGERIAN CUSTOMS. IF WHAT YOU'VE IN YOUR PAPERS CORRESPONDS WITH THE DATABASE,IT MEANS YOUR PAPERS ARE GENUINE.. ALWAYS ASK FOR RELEVANT DOCUMENTS LIKE THE SGD FORM AND OTHER FORMS WHENEVER YOU NEED TO PURCHASE A VEHICLE..

***** TWO DIFFERENT UNIT OF CARS CAN'T HAVE THE SAME C NUMBER ISSUED UNLESS THEY WERE ALL SHIPPED TOGETHER IN A CONTAINER.

is this service free? and do you really need names and addresses for the verification? putting our names and addresses on a public forum isn't really the best.

Sir,we are still consulting some NCS officials but by next week,we'll decide if the service will be free or not.

It's not neccesary you write down your name and address but the reason we'll need it is for verification because some people/forgers use the same C-number with the original for forgery,we'll need the owner's details but they should be sent through sms or mail,it's not mandatory you post on nairaland.

Have u ever wondered how you can identify fake custom papers?

All you need to check is what we call "CUSTOMS REFERENCE NUMBER" or c-number on your SGD form *single goods declaration form*.

This particular number is actually used to input details of your vehicle and payment of duty into the customs' database. It shows information like the consignee info ( agency handling your job),the means of entry (road for vehicles through land borders and ports for sea),office of entry (idiroko customs command or seme customs command or tincan port),location of vehicle and place of discharge(idiroko border/seme border, tincan),name and address of person/persons responsible for financial settlement (the owner of the vehicle) etc.

What fraudulent dealers do is called MO or machined outside-this is a process where a forger forges the bank receipts and all customs documentation. The documents look genuine but are not in the customs data base. It is a giant syndicate in the ports and borders because the vehicles are ultimately smuggled out of the ports/borders with conivance of fraudulent customs officials.

At the top right hand corner of your document is a very bold set of numbers. This is the "C" number. You can not miss it because it is so bold and prominent. Underneath it is a date. That date is to reflect the date duty was paid at the bank and stored in the customs ASSYCUDA data base. ASSYCUA means "automated system customs data". And the date under the C number means that that C number was computed into the data system on that date plus all the charges paid. If the payment reflects on the data base it means your documents are genuine,on the other hand if it does not reflect it means your car documents are duds/fake and your vehicle is liable to seizure and confiscation if you are stopped at any check point,if you are on a long distance journey.

My advise to any one buying a car from anybody is to request for the relevant documents in particular the SGD form which means "single goods declaration form" and has the C number boldly written at the top right hand corner. Under the C number is the date that document was posted into the data system.
No two vehicles can have the same C number and date. So armed with this you can visit any customs station to know if your documents are genuine.

With some cotonou smuggled cars showing up on our streets with forged documents as lagos cleared cars and vehicles been M.Od out of ports, this is a stress-free method of verifying your papers.

We have opened this thread for verification of C-numbers from the following points of entry -

GOOD EVENING NAIRALANDERS,

Jelad ventures has kept receiving whatsapp messages, sms and phone calls about C-NUMBER verification...

As much as we want people to move around in their vehicles with original duty papers verified by NCS officials, checking this documents doesn't come easy. Over time,we've been checking for people free of charge and any expense incurred,we pay but we're sorry,we need to change the system.

For every C-NUMBER we check,we need to tip the officers with recharge cards and sometimes as much as N3,000 - N5,000 for printing documents and even more to re-process lost or damaged files but to our dismay, immediately the owner's of these vehicles get the results, they just scram. What they don't know is that they've used their own convenience to disturb another vehicle owner that wants to verify papers through us.

An average person will need at least three/four liters of fuel to get to the nearest customs command near him/her and not all commands have the data input units, calls will need to be made to commands with the units and at the end of it all,you may need to tip the officer and all these will cost 2-3hours of manhours with at least N3,000 - N5,000 from your pocket. So what stops you from sending your details with a recharge card or a small tip sent to our account and you'll get the report from the comfort of your office/homes,you can even get scanned copies too.

DETAILS NEEDED FOR C-NUMBER VERIFICATION-

1. VIN/CHASSIS

2. A - NUMBER

3. C- NUMBER

4. DATE OF ENTRY

5. POINT/PORT OF ENTRY

Please note that these payment isn't mandatory,we are just trying to let you know what's right. The money doesn't go into our pocket,it is used to tip officers running the checks.

If you've checked your C-NUMBER and discovered that your papers are fake,Jelad ventures can also help you process new and original duty papers at subsidized rates, since they are already in Nigeria.

Thanks and God bless.

How about Brand new cars what paper should they have?

Bran new cars are mostly shipped by large auto marts like coscharis with duty already taken care of.....If you can prove that your vehicle was brought brand new from coys like coscharis etc, most times all you just need to show. Is a purchase document butif shipped by an individual, you'll need normal documents like a tokunbo car.

The question is based on the premise on lost custom documents.

YOUR C-NUMBER IS LIKE A UNIQUE PIN, IT IS USED TO REGISTER YOUR VIN, DATE OF ENTRY, POINT OF ENTRY, PAYMENT OF BANK CHARGES INTO THE VUSTOM DATABASE, THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO WITHOUT IT, MOST ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THE POINT AND DATE OF ENTRY.....

IF YOU KNOW THE POINT AND DATE OF ENTRY INTO NIGERIA WITH THE C-NUMBER OFF HAND, YOU CAN SWEAR AN AFFIDAVIT AND IT'S POSSIBLE THEY CHECK FOR YOU BUT IT WILL COST YOU MONEY.

***** THIS IS AN ADVICE, IF IT WAS A PREVIOUS OWNER/DEALER THAT TOLD YOU THAT THE PAPERS WERE LOST, DON'T BOTHER GOING TO CUSTOMS,THESE ARE JUST THE USUAL SCAM THEY USE TO SELL SMUGGLED VEHICLES, YOU MIGHT HAVE ISSUES WITH THEIR LEGAL AND CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE UNIT.,..

Jelad ventures is an advocate for a clean and successful entry for vehicles coming into NIGERIA through the port OR land borders. Vehicles could be cars, SUV, heavy machineries etc but as long as custom duty is paid,no issues will hinder it's movement.

Our crew was at the Federal Operations unit in Ikeja to help retrieve two vehicles that were impounded by the patrol. When we tell prospective importers that it's all about getting an agent that will quote low prices but getting an agent that will quote low prices and also get the vehicles into NIGERIA with no hassles. Many importers are always Penny wise but pound foolish when it comes to duty payment and with the new authorization from customs HQ that even registered vehicles should be seized when they are underpaid OR smuggled, many vehicle owners will have their vehicles impounded on the highways.

The two Camry cars were impounded because they were underpaid, the agents that were given the jobs paid N220,000 each instead of N300,000 - N350,000 in connivance with the importers but unfortunately they were all seized by f.o.u and each was released after spending almost N700,000 in their office. One of the importers had earlier contacted the JELAD crew to ask for the duty and he was given a quote of N380,000 **** CHARGED WITH THE NEW RATE OF N313 - 1$**** but someone somewhere decided to give the job to another agent for N280,000 which at the end backfired and they later had to seek for JELAD ventures' help to retrieve the cars from customs in Ikeja, they spent almost N700,000 extra on each car before they could be retrieved.

*** CHECKING YOUR DOCUMENTS DOESN'T COST MUCH AND ALLOWING AGENTS TO RAISE DEBIT NOTES FOR YOU TO AUGMENT WHAT THE INITIAL PAYMENT DOESN'T COST MUCH TOO.

*** ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU PAY THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF MONEY/DUTY BEFORE YOUR VEHICLE'S ENTRY INTO NIGERIA..

That's why we at JELAD ventures make sure that we strike a balance between what you've to pay for duty and what you can afford to pay as an importer. We make sure that what you pay doesn't go beyond what you're supposed to pay and you don't need to drain your bank account while paying...

1. Lagos port
2. Seme
3. Idiroko.

All you need to do is supply your name, address,VIN and the C-number of the vehicle and we run checks on it.THERE'S NO FIXED CHARGE FOR THE CHECKS BUT WHATEVER THE LORD PUTS IN YOUR HEART AS TIPS CAN BE SENT THROUGH OUR ACCOUNT...

shown below are the excos from the national body of the association of Nigerian licensed customs agents addressing agents on TUESDAY about the ongoing strike at seme border by agents.

The national president, ALHAJI SHITTU is sitted third from the left, while Mr Fanu (Nybo),the chairman of ANLCA seme border is standing.

Part of what was discussed is as follows :-

1. Central database and data exchange between Benin customs/agents and Nigerian customs/agents. Agents have been fighting for a central database for years but custom officers and ministry of finance have turned deaf ears to our pleas. The central database will prevent corruption and smuggling, if a car is bought from/shipped through cotonou,a notification comes on at the Nigerian end and the car is expected at the border, while the agent in charge is also informed, if the CAR is smuggled into Nigeria, the FRSC and NPF can be informed and the car and it's owner will be arrested at the point of registration, the officers and agents involved in smuggling can then be traced.

2. Reduction of import tariff so that importers can be encouraged.

3. Reduction of custom checkpoints on our highways to prevent extortion of agents and importers.

4. The enforcement of a "one Direct trader input unit ( DTI),one agency rule",which also take care of false declarations, fake duty papers and smuggling.

5. Arrest of custom officers caught running entries and agents caught conniving with them.

6. The data capture of every licensed customs agent and the strict compliance to the rule. Also the national president talked about re-training of all agents.

The national president in the person of Alhaji SHITTU is currently in Kano to meet the C.G of customs for a parley while the minister of finance has summoned the area controller of seme border, the deputy controllers of vehicle seat and valuation to advice her on the next step to take on the tariff.

**** STOP GIVING OUT YOUR JOBS TO UNLICENSED ROGUES CALLING THEMSELVES "AGENTS"

If an agent charges you N800,000 for a job, dont handover to an agent that claims he/she can do it for N400,000.

This thread has been active for years but unfortunately, none of the so-called agents even in nairaland have bothered to input their details on the thread, it shows the rot in the system and with time, it will be cleared by ANCLA.

3) Nigeria Customs’ palava: Customs’ issue is the king of all the challenges you can face when bringing your car into Nigeria from Cotonou. The issues ranges from vehicle seizure to exploitation. I do not hope for my enemy to experience this as those Custom guys are not smiling no matter who you are or who you know. They even seize vehicles that belong to their fellow custom officials as well as that of top military officials. The simplest way to save your car from being seized is by using a reliable and trustworthy agent and ensuring your car is taken into the Nigerian Customs’ compound at the border for proper duty assessment and payment.

4) Restricted movement: Most Nigerians who successfully bring in cars with compromised import duty from Cotonou usually count their gains at the time of purchase. However, this excitement fades away quickly as they begin to watch over their shoulders especially when travelling interstate. Some even travel without their cars due to fear of custom officials.

If any importer falls into these category,he/she can approach a licensed AGENT to raise what is called a DEBIT NOTE (D.N). A debit note is raised with the importers consent, its raised between the C. A. C,post clearance unit and the valuations units.

The D. N is used to cover-up for the balance of what was supposed to be paid as duty initially and believe me, a DN will save you from embarrassment when custom officers stop you on the highway.

Please note that before a DN can be raised, your papers must be original and the original year of declaration must be known, also the cheapest you can process a DN is N170,000 but please note that it's also subject to the model of the vehicle you're declaring.

Picture one shows the initial payment of N158,000

Picture two shows N105,000 that was raised as D. N for the vehicle.

Picture three shows the post clearance release form showing the reason a D. N was raised.
