New yam Festival I was young, when days were old When gods of harvest bless'd ten-fold And leafed men in masks esteemed sexy That danced to please applauding bevy And the ground shook beneath legendary stunt-men, The rhythm, zealous lads as I, left us chanting: "Onye akpala nwa-agu aka n'odu M'odi ndu m'onwuru anwu"a More masquerades, excitement at best When Mkpokiti-- the legends of the dance-- graced the fest Their charmed ladies dotted white in beauty chalk Left us lads aroused and afraid to walk for swollen groins And beneath my baked bare torso My heart pumped palm oil, for the yam was today not tomorrow: "Onye akpala nwa-agu aka n'odu M'odi ndu m'onwuru anwu!" a: The chant simply is ibo. It means: May none touch a young tiger's tail, dead or alive |

THE CRYING FUGITIVE In a running morning without any thought of going with a little sense of justification In the lonely land of imagination They cried! The smiling teeth of the wicked The ugly days of the annoying weekend Ah!He was taken to the beyond considering the beautiful bond bleeding heart of mankind judging the ways of men crying for vengeance for justice Yet justice is on exile Oh!what a fugitive. |

The bond of two peoples love cannot be broken, Bend it, twist it, do what you will with it; If it is true love then the sun will rise another day. |

DOWNPOUR OF NATURE I can see the cloudy sky Trying to placate you You have decided to wreath men of their shelters I can see the cloud gloomy and heavy Like a pregnant woman ready to disperse at any moment You have decided to wreck havoc on wicked souls Then you begin your descent! Rich drops of water from heaven that touches the earth Whistling and sizzling People running helter skelter Looking for shelter To hide their sinful body Pandemonium has broken loose You bring with you Fierce and strong wind that tends to tell man of his actions Then all is quiet! The sky is cleared of its anger The plants look fresh and ready to bloom Everywhere looks bright and fulfilling Like the beginning of the new day The earth looks damp and holy like a newborn baby Cool breeze of nature assures man of your tender gestures The rainbow appears bringing forth the living covenant You are the messenger of God conveying His messages What shall man do? What shall man say? What shall man think? If you decide not to acknowledge That man cannot do without you Man is doomed forever! |

a stone's throw from heaven there was no reason to awake the morning was dark and cold the sun was reluctant to rise my heart was afraid to beat, afraid to hear a call the call that got me waiting and might never come i did not breathe, i did not cry, i was wise still i receive no embrace, not even from sheol my God, my God. we love each other, my God and i. He is everywhere but not here when i need the embrace of a man He cannot kiss me, He cannot love me the way a man could my God, He created every good thing and he created an ache within me, an ache only this man can fill i miss him, this man, so much; i wish i never knew him. it has been five years and some have waited longer i longed to be with him but this day the walls of the bedroom echoed, "you are a stone's throw from heaven". though the words did not lie, it understated the nearness of heaven. heaven had come in my life time, here and now. heaven's breath i felt whisper over my shoulder. heaven called my name playfully "Sisi mi" heaven pulled me closer to himself as we lay carelessly in bed. heaven had come for me. what is heaven and who is heaven? this cold, dark morning, i dreamed a good dream this dream did not run from me even when i awakened. heaven remained. when he laid his hand on my left breast, my heart could feel his touch. heaven in my lifetime he held me so close he seeped into my soul the cherubs applauded our union heaven in my lifetime i had cursed myself, thinking he would never be back. he is back heaven in my lifetime culled from orita meta the crossroads "Cecilia" by peju alatise this aint my poem, so it in a book and i loved it so nilla, since you the judge here, poetry, is it just writing what you feel, anything? |

"TRIBUTE TO A LOST WORLD" and so it was in a time long gone when men and women of brown skin, toiled stretching their taut backs to enrich the dark soil with harvest of crops and an abundance of oil when young children sat at the feet of the old imbibing words of wisdom, as their stories unfold carefully raised up in a proud and hardworking mould always with smiles on their lips and a heart never cold alas darkness came in the guise of the light blackmen forced to believe they're inferior to white who raped our land and enslaved our might cos cunning and guile, we knew not how to fight generations have passed, but the struggle lives on in this mordern world, we are the last seed of zion we must seize our destiny, and our pride restore! make an everlasting tribute to our dead, lost world |
Re: Poetry Contest by nilla(f): 1:46pm On Nov 16, 2006 |
