Anambra worst hit by erosion, says Obi 18/3/2009

From Adimike George, Onitsha

Governor Peter Obi has described Anambra State as the most ravaged by erosion in the sub-Sahara Africa.

Obi, who spoke yesterday at the commissioning of the Ogboutu- Okpuno- Umuota-Obosi Erosion Control projects in Idemili North Local Government Area, said he will step up efforts at stemming the menace.

His initiatives on erosion control, he said, are meant to prevent loss of lives and property, adding: "My administration will continue to intervene in various erosion problems as the state is the worst-hit in sub-Sahara Africa".

Obi said Obosi, a community where former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku and other eminent Nigerians hail from, is of strategic importance to the nation.

The President-General of Obosi Town Union, Mr. James Ifekandu, praised the governor for his achievements.

He said the various projects in the community have opened it to the rest of the world and boosted its economy.

Ifekandu urged Obi to name the road after Dr. Ndi Onuekwusi in recognition of his contributions to the development of the community.

Obi has also assured of his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the Obosi by-pass is completed.
