Romeo4real: Thank you Romeo for the chastisement and advice. Keep up the work, we need it sometimes to wake up. You are probably right in a way. I will try my best to make out time for excercise and change my diet. I have a few questions here again: (1) Please, can i have a list of cadio/resistance excercises i can do at home?cos i get back home really late and going for a walk is not safe at such times. (2) What are the specifications/characteristics of a good treadmill? (3) Assuming i am willing to sacrifice for a good treadmill, what make/model would you advice? (4) What is the price range of good treadmills. NB: I am thinking and trying to figure out how to organise myself and start routine excercise. As soon as i start that, i will start posting it here on the forum along with my statistics and goals. |

@Romeo, Hope you are doing great! you go awol a lot these days though, gone are the days that I get a response within 24 hours[max] or do I hit you up on your mail am back with my issues, am so glad that I didn’t get the 4kg dumb bells cos am now getting the 10kg bars, it has 1kg[2],1.5k.g[2] and 2.5 kg[2] totaling 10kg on each bar, the 4kg will soon outlive its usefulness in a couple of weeks and I wouldn’t like to pay 7k for something that will not serve me, cos the gospel truth is that it didn’t feel that “heavy” , the 10k.g is 15k,I bargained for 12k,he rejected it but am giving it some few days, if he doesn’t change his mind I will go and pick it up. What is your take on Jillian Michaels’ 30 day shred and p 90x DVDs, I need something co-ordinated and all am reading about them are positive but my main issue is that I cant find them anywhere, am going try Ceddi plaza tomorrow though. @Eja, How is our little bun in the oven doing? @Sammie, Hope you don dey kampe fully? Finally @Might love, I didn’t know what to make of your post initially [cos the part about being an exercise freak I didn’t know what to make of it]. I used to work in a bank, had a little boy, used to get home late at night but I still managed to make time for exercise, the only thing I didn’t know about initially was portion control, I also didn’t know that it mattered if I had egusi vs vegetable, If I used too much oil, white bread vs. wheat bread e.t.c, knowledge they say is power. Anyway, I live in Abuja too, don’t have a treadmill cos it’s not really needed, and things in Abuja are crazily expensive, just get a skipping rope, step board[harmattan is almost here and Abuja can get chilly],dumb bells, fitness dvds and you are good to go!!!!!!. If you really must get machine, get an elliptical/cross trainer,i think my posts will tell you some things to work with am now swinging between 76-77k.g,so something must be working. My email addy is modath4@yahoo.com in case you want it. |

@Mopdath - I am replying as soon as i have time to get on-line. I also think my notifications are playing up again, so i don't know when someone has replied to my post. If you can get the adjustable dumbbells with extra weights, then do so. Though they may be more expensive to start with, but they are a better investment in the long term. Also. any structured program is good. I had a look at the Jillian Michaels one, and it looks quite good. It will need serious commitment though, as it looks hard if you plan to progress through the stages. To be honest, you can devise something like this yourself. You may also want to try the 100 Rep program. Basically, you you choose any 2 exercises, and do 100 reps of them (in total) everyday. You can structure this into a simple pattern. E.g, take 2 exercises - Press up and Squat, then begin the pattern - 1 press up, 1 squat, 2 press ups, 2 squats, 3 press ups , all the way to 10 press ups, 10 squats, then back down again - so 9 press ups, 9 squats, 8 press ups, This will result in 100 reps in total. You can change the exercises or pattern as you wish. |
Re: Daily Exercise And Food Routine For Those Who Want To Lose Weight by Romeo4real(m): 11:48pm On Oct 25, 2010 |
@Mightlove - (1) Please, can i have a list of cadio/resistance exercises i can do at home?Buy a skipping rope. See how difficult , or easy it is to start with. You can also use resistance exercises, such as squats/lunges/press-ups for cardio. The trick is to do very high reps continuously. You can include other exercises into the routine - but no resting until you complete the routine. E.g - Begin with 5 mins skipping to warm up, then 20 star jumps, 10 full squats, 20 star jumps, 10 full press-ups, 20 star jumps ,10 half squats, 20 start jumps, 10 close grip press-ups, etc. You can vary the pattern/ exercises as you wish (see the 100 rep program i suggested to Modath). A good program will take you minimum 30mins to complete and you should be dripping with sweat at the end. Remember, this program is continuous. No rest in between (2) What are the specifications/characteristics of a good treadmill? It depends on what you need. Things to look out for are - Pulse monitor - if you need it Minimum 1.5 Horsepower. This must be CONTINOUS duty power. V. Important Do you need incline? If so it MUST have 2 belts Get one that does a min 10mph - if you plan to run, 5mph if not At least 48" long and 16" wide belt size MUST be stable and balanced under use. If not do NOT buy Belt should not move or slip when walking or running Measure your space carefully. The good ones are quite large# (3) Assuming i am willing to sacrifice for a good treadmill, what make/model would you advice?I can only speak as i find. Nautilus, Technogym or Bowflex are all good brands. There are many other brands out there, but these are the ones i've used. (4) What is the price range of good treadmills. You will need to spend between $700- $1000 to get a decent one, though there are cheaper ones on the market. Treadmills can go up to $5000. NB: I am thinking and trying to figure out how to organise myself and start routine exercise.Best of luck, and do let me know if you need any help. I know this can be hard to start with, but try to identify when a decent gap opens up in your day. This will require some effort on your part. Dont worry if you feel tired, exercise instead of resting, and you will soon begin to feel much better for it. I used to wake up at 6am, to be in the gym for 6.30, work out, shower and leave at 8am, to be at work for 9am. It was tough waking up that early to begin a workout, but i identified that time as the best. If i left it till after work, numerous things conspire to make sure i'm too tired to work out - a hard day at work, stress, headache, too tired when i get home, etc. |

@ROMEO, Thanks so much, the reason am getting the dvd is cos i want structure,i know i have discipline and will power but i believe the dvd will be fun to follow.can you believe the p90x costs $150 and the Jillian michaels is just $15 so am nixing the p90x plan but am scared of ordering it online[amazon.com] cos am scared of yahoo boys,i don't want them to touch my widow's mite. Romeo, why does everything good have to cost so much, dumb bells costs an arm a leg, healthy version of food is dearer than the regular version e.t.c.its no wonder people will rather stay fat.i would too if my OCD will allow me.LOL |

@Modath - 150USD is sure a lot for an exercise dvd - unless they will be doing the exercises for you! You can get the Jillian dvd on Amazon for £5.99 UK, and $8.99 US. Both ship to Naija, but it may take up to a month, unless you are willing to pay for expedited delivery. Normal delivery costs are more or less the same as the Dvd price. You don't have anything to be worried about regarding the yahoo boys - as long as you are doing it from a home computer, with virus protection, and is only used by people you trust. Romeo, why does everything good have to cost so much, dumb bells costs an arm a leg, healthy version of food is dearer than the regular version e.t.c.its no wonder people will rather stay fat.i would too if my OCD will allow me.LOLLOL!! , Unfortunately, it is so. In my neck of the woods, a small glass of apple juice costs more than a whole pint of beer. Can u imagine that! But to put it into perspective, the dumbbells are gonna be forever, and they cost a lost less than some of your shoes, or handbags! |

Re: Daily Exercise And Food Routine For Those Who Want To Lose Weight by modath(f): 9:07am On Oct 27, 2010 |
@Romeo, The $15 is with shipping cost,i will go to the new silver bird galleria today,if i don't find it there & you said its likely to take a month before i take delivery,I'd wait for one of the people i know that are coming home for Xmas. As for the shoes and bags thingy,i believe i am one of the few women that actually feels great when i pay rock bottom price for anything,i am not a fickle buyer ,retail therapy does absolutely nothing for me and i don't shop in Abuja,i buy things for every one in my family in balogun lagos where i will get everything cheaply, there is a complex in balogun called sunny land[ladies in lagos can check it out]all brands[Steve madden,Dorothy Perkins, next, fioni,American connection, montego bay, guess e.t.c]of shoes are there, all kinds of great looking knock off bags you want, you'd find and the most you are ever going to pay is 8k. The only expensive accessories i have are the Italian shoe and bag sets for owambe,[and i have even stopped buying them cos they are too mamaish]and gold and that is just cos i know that i can trade it in any day i want. @might love, How far ? |

Snack: a handful of peanuts water: about 2 litres Excercise: couldnt do much. I did a few stomach crunches, squats, lunges and press ups (did about 5 each) I hope to do better today. |
Re: Daily Exercise And Food Routine For Those Who Want To Lose Weight by mightlove(f): 9:22am On Oct 27, 2010 |
modath: Am good modath. just posted my log for yesterday. i am sure there may be one or two things that are not supposed to be in my diet I feel you jare. abuja is stinkingly expensive. I will check sunnyland when next i go to Lagos cos thats where i do my shopping too. i only get things that are pressing here in Abuja when there is no other alternative. where do you buy your children stuff in Lag? |
Re: Daily Exercise And Food Routine For Those Who Want To Lose Weight by modath(f): 5:49pm On Oct 27, 2010 |
@might love, There are great stockists not too far away from sunny land where i get stuff for my kids,if you know balogun well, there is a UBA[Bank] ,around there just take your time and look you'd definitely find what you are looking for or go to tinubu where baby stuff are sold, you'd shop till you drop. 2.Can we try and do away with white bread, fried plantain, sugared drinks e.t.c cos you are not likely to find the time to exercise enough to cancel out the calories they contain.secondly try and do cardio, its very important at the moment cos you have a lot of mass to shed and also try not to put a time limit on you goal as you may get discouraged if things dont work out as you'd want, rather make the necessary dietary changes, get in 30-45 minutes of brisk walk 5x and 15-30 minutes of strength/body weight/resistance training in 3-4 X a week and watch magic happen. i do hope you realize that you will lose weight without moving a muscle if your diet is on point, its just that you may not look good!!!!!!!!!. @Romeo, Is it okay if she doesn't jump rope for now,cos of her weight?. |
Re: Daily Exercise And Food Routine For Those Who Want To Lose Weight by mightlove(f): 8:37am On Oct 28, 2010 |
@modath: thanks for the advice. i will have to stock my fridge/freezer with wheat bread so that i wont go near whitebread again. YESTERDAY breakfast: 2 small apples lunch: 2 servings of rice with stew dinner: semovita and ewedu soup with a piece of meat (i going to get fish this weekend so that i will cut down on the meat) snacks: - I ate 2 medium size oranges. - ate a handful of ground nuts ehen, modath, where do you think i can get a good weighing scale in Abj and which would you advice me to get - (a digital or analogue. i got a digital one from megaplaza in Lag but it kept acting up and has finally packed up). |
Re: Daily Exercise And Food Routine For Those Who Want To Lose Weight by modath(f): 6:03pm On Oct 28, 2010 |
@MIGHTLOVE. You'd get a good scale[digital] at grand square or go to sports world in ceddi or emab plaza [wuse 2],before buying put a dumb bell from the shop on it to confirm its accuracy.mine i got in Lagos, its accurate but it measures by rounding up to .5 or 1 so i wouldn't advise you to get mine, the one my friend has she bought in grand square for 7.5k but mine is 3.5k.LOL mightlove: |

Re: Daily Exercise And Food Routine For Those Who Want To Lose Weight by Romeo4real(m): 9:50pm On Oct 28, 2010 |
@Modath - Is it okay if she doesn't jump rope for now,cos of her weight?.Its up to her. If she can, and its not too difficult, then she should. Until she tries, she wont know. As long as she does not over do it to begin with, she should be fine. In any case, she will have to push herself beyond boundaries of comfort. @Mightlove - i will have to stock my fridge/freezer with wheat bread so that i wont go near whitebread again. Please see above. Also, there is nothing wrong with White bread per se, it just has has less fibre than brown or wholemeal bread. Because of this, it has a lower glycemic index (GI) - which means it is digested relatively quickly. When choosing bread, it is far more important to not the amount of salt in it, and also to make sure that no extra sugar or fat/oils have been added. Also try to eat your heaviest meal in the day, and your lightest in the evening/night. This is v.important @Eja - the sugar/salt is in it already. |
