I'll suggest you do a thorough research before making conclusive statements

Oba is the word for King in the Yoruba language of contemporary West Africa Nigeria. Kings in Yorubaland are known as Obas, for example Oba Sijuade of Ile ife, Oba Aromoralan of Ijeshaland, Oba Adeyemi of Oyo, Oba Eriediewa of Benin. The Benin people adopted the word from the Yoruba. The Benin word for King is Ogie or Ogiso changed to Oba when Eweka l son of yoruba prince Oranmiyan came to the throne in Benin.

Hope you can see that the Bini man is lying when he says the word 'Oba' is indigenous to the Bini kingdom

It is incredibly annoying to read all the rubbish on this nairaland page. And all of you are spewing rubbish. You lack the ability to differentiate history from myth and to distinguish what happened 40 years ago from what happened 200 years ago. You guys think exactly like little children who don't quite understand the basics of this world yet.

Let me start by saying one thing: The name Benin belongs to the Benin Kingdom whose capital is Benin City ! The french speaking country which calls itself Benin republic borrowed that name from the actual Benin Kingdom after decolonisation ! Not the other way around.
I would also like to stress out the fact that the "Bight of Benin" was named so hundreds of years before the existance of Benin republic, therefor it is impossible that it was named after Benin republic. Although back then there was a nation referred to as Benin Kingdom to some and Benin Empire to others, its capital was Benin City.
