Many people may find mysterious scratches on their body when they wake up in the morning. They may wonder from where these scratches appeared even when they were sound asleep. People still believe it to be due to some form of spirit or a non physical form which may be responsible for such scratches that appear on their body.
Such form of scratches can appear anywhere on the body, they can be on the legs, arms, on thighs, face, back or even on the abdomen.
The exact reason for mysterious scratches on body is still unclear, however scientists suspect it can be an allergic response, but the specific allergen remains undetected. Others believe it is related to genetics. The pathophysiology involves triple response on firm stroking of skin. The response consists of swelling and redness due to capillary dilatation, followed by exudation (seepage) of fluid and surrounding flare up due to arteriolar dilatation.

The condition is not tied up with any race or gender specific; however, it is more prevalent between the age group of 20 to 30. Some common factors that are suspected to cause mysterious scratches are anxiety, wearing tight clothing, pressure from bed sheet, physical and emotional stress, heat and cold or anything that causes stress to the skin.

Often the linear rash may develop due to scratching which you may not have realized in sleep. Your skin is more susceptible to such scratches if it is dry.
