We are in the Group of Death at the upcoming AFCON under 20. EGYPT, MOZAMBIQUE, SENEGAL AND NIGERIA. The criteria for the Group placement is laughable.

The 2023 Afcon U20 Group Stage Draws: Official

This is the 23rd edition.

Bosso & Amoo's boys really in the toughest group of the first round.

How Wafu A and Wafu B Champs find themselves in the same group is really strange but well, here it goes. I guess they used the team’s Standings from the last tournament to seed them and Nigeria and Senegal weren't present at the last one.

Uganda finished runners up in the last edition. Gambia were third and Tunisia were fourth.

So the top seeded teams per group were most likely Egypt (Host), Uganda and The Gambia.

Tournament holds from 19th February to 11th March.

Recall that Nigeria has won 7 U20 Afcon titles (Highest in History).

Just a quick one, Bounou was born in Canada but raised in Morroco from 5yrs of age.

Getting foreign born players for quick success can only take you so far. At the long run its not sustainable that's the difference between Algeria and Morroco.
Algeria didn't invest in their domestic game as much. That's why you barely hear about an Algerian club doing well in CAF competitions recently.

Morroco on the other hand, have invested handsomely in their home grown players and its a matter of time, they will have a steady flow of world class players which can sustain the legacy being built now. One of the best midfielders at the world cup, Ounahi came from their system.

The template to follow is to lay a solid foundation at home while getting elite foreign born players. Not 3rd rate foreign born players like Etuhu, Shittu, Maduka Okoye, etc.
On point about Bono, he started from Wydad youth team. But was Shittu sheet for 9ja, I think he was a committed player for the SE in his days.

Update: It's Over! It's My Dream To Play For My Country, England - Chukwuemeka

Talking about his aims for next year, the teenager sets his targets on making his official debut for England.

“In 2023, I want to kick on and break into the team,” Chukwuemeka told Chelsea's 5th Standard Application.

“To make my Champions League debut. To keep my confidence high. To build on my past performances.

“And so much as it was my dream to play for Chelsea, it’s also my dream to play for my country England.

“I’ve set myself this goal to play at EURO 2024.”

I wish him good luck.

It is very hard to be remembered in football folklore if you don't have a memorable world cup performance, let alone participate at the world cup.

Haaland and Norway need to find a way to qualify for 2026.

I think Haaland's injury played a role in their inability to qualify for the just concluded one. They lost the couple of matches he missed. Hopefully, they qualify for the next one.

Still makes me mad that the WAFU bloc couldn't do anything to avert this stupid zonal qualifiers format. I really don't see hoa the format has helped Southern and Eastern African teams.. they are still as before...

3 group winners, 3 group Runners-up and 2 best 3rd placed teams.

So theoretically, 3 can get out of the group depending on the outcomes of the other 2 groups.

There would be a Quarterfinals stage as seen in the last edition.

it’s crazy , just look at these teams. If these ones make it to the World Cup then they’ll end up embarrassing Africa with heavy defeats

The Mumu Players:

Alfredo Di Stefano - Played 6 times for Argentina before abandoning them and switching to Spain.

Diego Costa - Chose Spain over Brazil ahead of the 2014 World Cup and we all know he was better than who Brazil paraded up top (Fred).

Marcus Senna - Chose Spain over Brazil. Won Euro 2008 with Spain as a Super Regular in Defensive midfield and could also cover at LB.

So there goes your question.

I know
I’m just asking why 3 giants in 1 group
I hope the players don’t get injured o
Cause na war
Qualifying for the World Cup is just the beginning of their career graphs
They must qualify for the WC

Because these 3 giants weren't present at the last edition and one of them has to be top-seeded as the host.

The other 2 groups have two other top seeded teams based on their finish at the last edition, I believe. Uganda finished as Runners up and The Gambia were bronze medallists.

I think this is CAF's possibly best explanation for the weird groupings.

these countries are just smarter, if an U-18 player born abroad shows great promise they can bring them to the senior team, if such happens here we’ll see people protesting and saying maybe the NFF have been bribed

How old was Iwobi when he got into the SE , he is now a core player for the SE.

codemaniacs:

Eguavoen said Amoo was too young that his time will come... he was on the bench against Ghana but didn't play... Nigerian coaches don't give young players who are still teenagers who shows potential a chance and the NFF doesn't encourage the coach to play them...

Irrespective of your age of you are showing oustanding quality consistently in your club and league. Then if your good enough your old enough.

After all how old is the most sought after and probably best young Midfielder in the world Jude Billingham ❓

Potential is not enough you must be proven and established. Playing in a league rated near 20 in Europe is not good enough. If you are really good you will not remain in a low level league, it's that simple.

Nigerian coaches?
Didn't Rohr tell the media that he wasn't giving Osimhen game time at the 2019 AFCON because he was too young and not physically fit enough?

He didn't mention age, he said he wasnt physical enough and lacked the strength to cope at THAT TIME.

V.O. had improved immensely since then .

But Diego Costa and Thiago Alcantara chose spain over Brazil, Jorginho chose Italy over Brazil too. Before we say Costa isn't playing well now, remember he used to be an absolute terror to defenders especially at the time where Brazil was short of out and out strikers.

We can win the world cup in the next 20 years or less. The golden generation of okocha could have gotten to the semi finals.
Also, with the rate at which our football academies are producing players and our foreign birns and local league we stand a chance.
One coach just has to put 2 and 2 together and fashion a winning team. I mean Victor eletu, Ahmed abdulahi, azeez oseni etc can get to the semi final of the world cup or win it by 2030 to 2034.
The talent production is there.
I know people don't believe it but our grassroots football is underrated, underepoted but very vibrant
