Honestly I don't care for internet speed. All I care for's internet penetration. What do we need the speed for, downloading or streaming movies? There are many sites which compress full-length movies to 200MB per copy; the only difference between my entertainment and those of developed countries is better picture quality. Everyone uses mp3s nowadays so we all hear the same quality sound.
The main thing one needs the internet for is knowledge building, the speed of one's connection plays a very little part. The more people educating themselves via the internet the better they can improve their living conditions via self-empowerment.
Your post is very funny. Speed plays a huge part. Slow speed internet can be very frustrating and waste valuable time. Even my 4 year old nephew can't stand slow internet not to mention grown ups. I guess it's because you live in Nigeria and kind of used to slow internet. How do you stream Netflix, play ps4 online, stream YouTube, download textbooks, video call, update computer softwares and phone apps, business environment e.t.c with a slow internet,?

Countries with the fastest internet

Electronic devices are things that we use every day and has a huge influence on our daily life. Especially the Internet is becoming more and more important for nearly everybody, probably more important than the devices themselves, and is now our most preferred means of everyday communication.

However, to enjoy the uninterrupted services of the internet, you need to have good connectivity. There are two important metrics in bandwidth allocation (measured in Megabits per second or Mbps): download and upload speed, denoting the speed of inbound and outbound data respectively.

The average web page loads at 6.3 Mbps universally, a number that denotes how many million bits of data can be moved in a second.

While 6.3 mbps is quick enough to send an email or watch a Netflix show, it’s still very slow.

Akamai Technologies, a Massachusetts-based internet provider, did a study on how the internet speeds measure up in countries worldwide. The company releases a report every quarter that ranks countries as per their internet speed.

According to them, here are the top 10 countries, which are mentioned in descending order of net connectivity.

1. South Korea

According to the Akami report, people in South Korea enjoy the fastest internet in the world. The country’s average internet speed measures 29 Mbps, which is 4.6 times as quick as the global average.

To put things in perspective, the average HD film is about 5,000 MB. A computer could download that in a little over two and a half minutes at 29 Mbps speed.

In spite of more than 80% of South Korean households have access to some of the world’s fastest internet connections, they face usage limitations. Several internet users have to face strong internet censorship in South Korea, according to a report released last year by the nonprofit Freedom House.

2. Norway.

Norway witnessed the biggest growth (68%) in internet speed at 21.3 Mbps since last year in comparison to any other country in the top 10. At this speed, a computer could upload or download about five high-quality photos per second.

3. Sweden.

Sweden’s internet offers an average of 20.6 Mbps, which means that many people hardly face any experience delays, even if they have multiple applications running that use a lot of bandwidth.

Since last year, the country has noticed a 32% increase in speed.

4. Hong Kong

Hong Kong was the first country in the world to hit 60 Mbps in 2013. Today, its residents enjoy an average internet speed of 19.9 Mbps.

5. Switzerland

The internet in Switzerland rises at an average 18.7 Mbps, a 25% increase from last year.

And if you follow football closely you'll notice that they also play world cup qualifier independently. So i'd say it's safe to refer to them as a country.

Pls I have a question. I know natives of China are referred to as Chinese. What exactly can use to call a native of Hong Kong?

Nigerians citizens are the biggest problem to progress in Nigeria.
If you make the internet fastest in the world, Nigerians will steal the wires and machines like they steal transformers and mercury.

Actually, he's not wrong. Depending on the codec, whether the video is compressed or not, and especially the bit rate, a 1080p video could hit as high as 8GB.

In fact, a Blu-ray disc can hold up to 25gb, and they are used for full HD videos. A typical DVD does 4.7, so it shows that some full HD content surpasses 5GB.

That's not what Naijji meant. Refer to his quote again. He intended to correct OP's miscalculation of using MB/sec instead of mb/sec. Bits vs bytes.

You're still saying the same thing. 29Mbps is same with 29Mb/s!! The p is denoted with / , which simply means the "per".

29Mbps (29Mb/s) = 29Megabits per second. while

29MBps (29MB/s) = 29Megabyte per second.

B for Bytes while b for bits.
Thank you honestly this thing causes problems sometimes is a person doesn't know the diff ..........
and that is how Nigerian isp will be advertising 13mbps (megabitspersecond) and ppl will think other wise hmmmmm undecided undecided

Your explanation makes complete sense in terms of the resolutions for each. However, HD is colloquially used to refer to full HD to the not so tech savvy. The average person buying a blu-ray disc will say that they have the movie in 'HD'. I'm making an assumption here to assume the author was talking about 1080p.

However, if not, I think it'd be quite unusual for a 720p video of 2 hours to hit 5GB.

Ethnically, they're Chinese. But for the purpose of unambiguity between them and the people from Mainland China, Hong Kong people refer to themselves as 'Hong Konger'.
