Yaba Lagos

Yaba is called the Silicon Valley of Africa, some have even coined the word, Yabacon (YV).
Yaba is a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria and located at the mainland of the Lagos. This area is already growing as Nigeria’s technology hub and a cluster of hundreds of banking institutions, educational institutions, technology and startup companies which steadily attracts angel investors, venture capitalists, enthusiasts and media people from all over the world. This cluster is the major reason many technology firms are considering opening up shops in Yaba. Close to the region is the Lagos Lagoon which lies on its south-western side, it empties into the Atlantic via Lagos Harbor, the main channel through the heart of the city, 0.5 km to 1 km wide and 10 km long.
Yaba is a part of Lagos Nigeria with many small towns and communities such as Onyigbo, Ebute Metta, Makoko, Sabo, Akoka, Abule Ijesha, Onike, Jibowu, and Iwaya among others.

The new terminal is scheduled to start operations on 28 June with two berths, 600 m long, plus a small tugboat berth, with a capacity of 1m TEUs per year. MPS also plans a third berth – at 1,100m long – for the end of the first quarter of 2020 and a fourth berth – at 1,400m – at the end of 2020. The terminal will then be able to process more than 2m TEUs per year.

2 million TEU in Tema

Even Lo'me port and COtonuo ports are not kids let alone Abidjan

What are your current TEUs per annum?

In other words,I wanted to know the cargo capacity your ports handled,I'm not so much into the overall port capacity! To say that a port can handle 3M TEUs but it's only handling cargo of about 2.5M TEUs per annum!

"West African ports now have to adapt to handle this increase in vessel-size, or risk losing their relevance in the area. Already, over a dozen West African outlets can or will be able to accept vessels larger than 10,000 TEU. And yet Nigeria lags behind, peaking at ships of 4,600 TEU. As well as the liner trade structure, carriers involved annual trade capacity analyses and the supporting port and terminal developments."

Dynamar, reported that Nigeria's Apapa Port in Lagos (1 million TEUs) lost 30 per cent of its container traffic over five years due to chronic congestion and the poor quality of its services. Tema Port in Ghana with 0.95 million TEUs ranks 2nd, Nigeria is 3rd with 0.92 million TEUs, followed by Abidjan (0.66 million) TEUs 4th and Dakar (0.57 million) TEUs as 5th.

Nigeria investigating soldiers who 'absconded with cash'
Soldiers are often used to transport money across the country.

Nigeria's military authorities say they are investigating reports that some soldiers absconded with $1.6m-worth of cash in the local currency.

It is not clear how the men who were on escort duties diverted the money, but a military source told the BBC that a huge sum is missing and that a senior officer has been placed under house arrest in the capital, Abuja.

An officer in the defence headquarters who briefed the press on Tuesday confirmed that an investigation was on going, adding that "the outcome will be made known to the public in due course".

Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu declined to give further details in an incident with many missing parts.

The money was reported to have been diverted by five junior soldiers, who were on escort duties.

One report says the money taken was intended for "military operational funds", while other accounts said the money belonged to a former senior officer in the army. The soldiers had reportedly escorted a truck carrying the cash from Sokoto to Kaduna in the north-west, where they seized it, discarded their army uniforms and absconded.

Nigeria's military is engaged in operations across the country, battling an insurgency, kidnapping, cattle thieves and bandits in different regions.

A substantial part of country's annual budget goes to the defence ministry, but soldiers at the forefront, especially those fighting militant group Boko Haram in the north-east, have often complained of a lack of equipment and non-payment of allowances.

Great breakdown
I think we are doing more than 1.1-1.2 million TEUs

Our Mombasa port is constantly under modernization and we are building something larger than it in the name of Lamu Port which will be one of the deepest if not the deepest port in Africa and also one that can handle much larger vessels, talk of the Panamax vessels that typically stretch to lengths of about 400m.The Mombasa Port can easily evacuate cargo from 200-300m in lengths. Anything of about 200m or above in length is a monster ship!

As it stated " due to traffic congestion "...it's a good thing that apapa road is beginning to get itself to order..so so technically yours became 0.95 while ours reduce to 0.92 last year.

To Obaboon and co. that kept bragging about Nigeria's basketball being the best in Africa, Kenya is in the semis and Nigeria is not. I kept telling you Nigeria is not sporting powerhouse. Basketball and football were the only games you could beat us and now we are better than you in basketball and would beat you in football if we met.
