My bad, sorry there kikuyu. Your not talking fantasies, I am talking about designing your own navie being a fantasy not your ideas. I agree with Nigeria being a clear African super power in a decade or so, it's going to need strong industries driving it, yet it also need's cooperation. A ship building enterprise can't be set up over night. But there should be a good market for it in Nigeria. If it can build a space programme, give me one reason why it can't build a ship building programme to rival the likes of Germany, that's if Nigeria's government can get it's act in gear.I knew you'd see my point. We must start from somewhere! Baby steps until the primary competencies are learned-from then on, anything is possible. |

GenBuhari:Tell them my dear, tell them. We have the highest number of peacekeeping troops, but we’re not at peace with each other. Can a blind man lead a blind man? The answer is no; so what I think is that the government should focus more on providing peace and security to the masses rather than wasting the lives of our military men on other nations in the name of peace keeping. |

The nigerian military would have been useful in the Bokassa peninsuala affair. If france had not stepped in. |

So, since we are talking about military here. Does anyone agree with me that ground forces are almost obsolete? And naval forces are only usefull in providing a plateform for fighter jets and aircraft carrier defense. What do you guys think? is naval and ground warfare almost outdated is Air force and missle war the way of the future? |
Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by Chongaiman: 5:34pm On Apr 09, 2011 |
^^^ No sir! Let me quote from one Nigerian military precis, ". . . . Aircraft can scream across the battlefield bombing and strafing, but when all this is done it requires a man with a rifle in his hand to walk across the ground . . . and deny it to the enemy . . . .There have been attempts to replace manpower with firepower, but the experiment has never succeeded. . . " ". . . . Artillery, tanks and aircraft can break an enemy's spirit, demoralise him, inflict casualties; but unless this is followed up by determined men on foot, the advantage is lost and the effort wasted . . . " |

Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by Mariory(m): 3:26am On Apr 10, 2011 |
Chongaiman: A very good example of this was the NATO bombing of Serbia/Kosovo (NATO completely dominant in the air but made zero difference on the ground). The same scene played out in the Israel/Hezbollah war (Before Israel sent in ground troops). To a lesser extent (due to rebel fighters on the ground), this is also true of NATO air campaign in Libya. |

@ Hinwa, What were you thinking? You obviously lack tact to post that photo. May be that was the reason he ditched you (if at all). Please get on with your life as there are still many men for the taking in El Geneina. |

Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by pleep(m): 2:29am On Apr 29, 2011 |
hmmm. . . Time magazine recently published an article about worldwide military spending. Apparently, The Nigerian military is quite underfunded. With probably the lowest percent Budget from GDP out of any country of around her population. Cant say i'm complaining though, I don't want Nigeria to feel obligated to waste lives and millions of dollars in Somalia or ivory coast. That money is for Obasanjo to enjoy. |

when i saw it i did not think of it that way, but the idea of Lagos having a police helicopter is actually funny. having an air chase in naija is so cool, officers driving: eagle 1 wer u day now? helicopter: forget that guy i day go check out Ghana!!! lol. any ways naija is great development is slow but sure, n as i alwayz say IT DEPENDS ON THE PRIVATE SECTOR, i ask people, if u come with 12 million dollars n say u want 2 build a road , granted they may not name d road after u but which idiot in power will say no? if u build a hospital and donate it to the government will they refuse ? never, so somtimes instead of runnnig our mouths we can contribute 2 national development!!!! yea , if u dont like smtg dont come here and start hating on people posting pics, go change it. For example buy the aircraft carrier!! naija will say a big thank Sir!!!lol |

I told you the time is ripe to start a serious indigenous ship building industry! It seems someone agrees with me: India’s largest shipbuilding firm ABG Shipyard Ltd is forming a joint venture to set up a large shipbuilding yard in Nigeria. ABG Shipyard, which lost out to Bharati Shipyard in a domestic takeover battle for control of Great Offshore about a year ago, is expected to own 40 per cent stake in a JV with a group of Nigerian investors including Nkrah Investment Ltd (a provider of marine operations and logistics services) and BGL Private Equity Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of BGL Plc., a Nigerian investment bank), Besides building ships, it will also construct oil drilling rigs, support & offloading vessels, LNG carrier vessels, container carriers, patrol vessels and military equipment for the Navy.Make a good start. Start somewhere. Then develop further. Build your patrol boats, corvettes then after a while you can move onto frigates and destroyers. Too many times negroes want to jump into new things full steam ahead without adequate preparation. When everything is effed over they start pointing fingers. You're making a positive beginning! |

Forgot the link. Here:http://www.offshoreenergytoday.com/indian-abg-shipyard-ltd-establishes-jv-to-open-large-shipbuilding-yard-in-nigeria/ Here are some of their successfully completed projects: Once you have an up and running shipyard with reputable local engineers its easier to licence build foreign designs since costs come down. |

i think the nigerian military wil go places if only the politicians can be focused and the able to define nigerias strategic goals in africa and indeed the world. |
Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by abeggnow: 5:20pm On May 11, 2011 |
the nigerian military will need to spend money on more morden equipment.as for the airforce we need to focus on 4th generation type mulirole fighters, this business of f-7 planes was a waste except they are to be used for agresor training.the days of interceptors are long gone. we planes like f-16 or mig-29smk and d likes for our air defence and strike capability needs then we also need dedicated ground attack birds like su-25.we also need to focus on logistics issues as it is nigerias air lift capabilities is a joke.in my own opinion we need to focus most on our air lift and survelance capabilities.as for the navy nigeria is a mojor oil exporter and most of our economy is reliant on the sea.we need to be able to defend our sea lane and escort our marchant ships wen the time comes.a single frigate and 4 corvets is laugherable.we can buy some second hand frigates and atlist a destroyer as the nations flag ships.another thing we need to do is intregrate this platforms force coherdsion. |
Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by Mariory(m): 7:58pm On May 11, 2011 |
abeggnow: All this will cost money that does not exist at the moment. Unless you are suggesting we divert more funds from other sectors to the military cause those politicians enjoying the 'national cake' are not going to reduce their intake for the sake of the military. |

Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by komekn(m): 4:37pm On May 13, 2011 |
The term tribute in this context implies outstanding performance and laudable achievement, the question however, has to be qualified on a comparative basis. Who are we the giant of Africa comparing ourselves to? Ghana, Senegal, Cameroun or should it not be S.Africa, Egypt and maybe Libya. I find it disturbing to see we still have in service AK47’s as our standard issue rifle, they don’t even have optical sights. All modern armies have optical sights on their assault rifles as standard issue some even dual optical sights. In reality it makes a huge difference between firing multiple rounds before one hit or just a few and one hit. Furthermore it means you don’t have so many stray bullets hitting civilians as we can testify in Nigeria, the issue is quality not quantity. Another question who on this forum would rather have a 3 year old Mercedes or a brand new Chinese car, I rest my case with Chinese sourced fighter planes. I commend our armed forces who with quite often substandard equipment do an amazing job for us. Finally I like the look of the rifles our SS are carrying they look like HK36 and also the TAR21 but not sure. |
