Reps Returns CRK as Independent Subject

ABUJA-By a unanimous voice vote, members of the House of Representatives at plenary on Tuesday jettisoned the Buhari's government policy which subsumed Christian Religious Knowledge, CRK in Civic Education as a compulsory subject in the Secondary School curriculum.

This followed a motion titled “Call to make Civic Education an optional instead of a compulsory subject for Senior Certificate Examination”, filed by Hon. Beni Lar from Plateau State. The members after an exhaustive debate on the motion agreed that the policy was incongruent with the spirit and letters of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) on the provision of religious liberties.

The members agreed that students with the inputs of their parents at formative years should be taught the religious subjects of their choice in school. Essentially, the House while pointing out that the policy makers erred ab initio also agreed Islamic Studies and CRK should be taught independently and separately in the spirit of the constitution.

It will be recalled that the issue recently became a subject of controversy whereupon tempers flared.

Background and Focus of the 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum
The 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) was developed in response to Nigeria’s need for relevant, dynamic and globally competitive education that would ensure socio-economic and national development. Specifically, BEC was developed to ensure that learners at the basic Education level receive well rounded education capable to compete favourably anywhere in the world in terms of knowledge, skills, techniques and values and aptitude. Thus BEC addresses amongst other things, the issues of value re-orientation, poverty eradication, critical thinking, entrepreneurship and life skills.

BEC was produced and distributed to all public Primary and Junior Secondary Schools nationwide in 2007. Its implementation commenced nationwide, in Primary 1 and JSS 1 classes in September 2008 respectively. The first batch of JSS students graduated in June 2011. It is expected that by September 2014, the cohort of pupils that benefitted from the use of BEC at the primary school level will be entering class one of the Junior Secondary School.

Vanguard should stop misleading people in the name of business or whatever that pushes them to do this.

This policy was made under Jonathan in 2014 and Buhari has not even touched it at all.

I pity people playing politics of religion and ethnicity. Nothing destroys places like wildfire like religion and ethnicity politics.

When it starts, even the facilitators wont be able to quench it. Boko Haram, Al qeada, Al shubab, Biafra, etc are good examples. Even Ojukwu ran away when the problem got to the crescendo.
