koboko69: French was never compulsory during my school days, it was always optional. Even at that, nobody should be compelled to offer it if the person doesn't want, just because the school lacks the teachers. Same should go with Arabic. In that curriculum, they said it's minimum of 9 subjects but maximum of 10 subjects but there ar only 10 subjects there meaning that students would be found in a situation where they ar to choose between French and Arabic after they must have selected the other more important eight subjects. This puts them in a situation where they would have to choose between French and Arabic. English, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and even Arabic teachers abound everywhere. There ar so many graduates that studied these courses and can teach the students to any level even up to SSCE level, an average imam can teach Arabic so well to any level, so Arabic teachers also abound, but we can't say same for French. French secondary school teachers ar very scarce, even during our school days, we used to have only one teacher for the whole junior classes in the school that offer French. See the solution, let the ministry of education bring back CRK and IRS as separate subjects and still maintain National Values or Civic education as a separate subject, thereby bringing the total number of subjects for JSS level for instance to 12. Then let them still make it that students can offer minimum of 9 subjects. U will see that non-muslim students will have CRK to select and avoid French and Arabic, and Muslim students who school in places that there ar no Arabic but only IRS teachers can easily select IRS and complete their nine subjects without being compelled to offer French. |

nwamehn: So there are more graduates in Arabic and other languages than French in Nigeria? Lol Be lying to yourself. In b/w u can never know how to speak or write French or Arabic fluently by just the preambles tot in sec schs so what's the fuss about if I may ask? |
Re: House Of Representatives Returns CRK As Independent Subject by nwamehn: 3:13am On Jul 12, 2017 |
koboko69: The fuss is about the fact that based on our religious sentiments right here in Nigeria, an average christian wouldn't desire that his or her child studies Arabic as a subject same way it won't make any sense to a an average muslim having his children studying Hebrew. Nigeria is divided across religious lines and we ar very sensitive to religion, so any leader should always take note of that in policy making and implementation. Now regarding scarcity of teachers, have u ever heard an imam speak Arabic? Seriously u would think it's his mother tongue. But it's certainly not the same with French. So many teachers of English, Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa abound, we all can speak these tongues so fluently but same can never be said of French. Besides, what stops them from expanding the subject options to 12 including CRK and IRS so that students can select their nine subjects and damn Arabic and French, if there was no fuss? If they can't do it this way and solve all these issues once and for all, then e mean say they know wetin they de find. |

linearity: Oga u r wrong, wen an executive decision is taking, only d judiciary can halt that decision. Case study is d Trump's travel ban. The legislature cannot do work for the executive, if the legislature is doing the executive work, den u r saying they are more powerful than the executive. Whatever they av agreed on this matter is only an advisory position. The executive decision still stands |
Re: House Of Representatives Returns CRK As Independent Subject by saintmark88(m): 7:16am On Jul 12, 2017 |
This stand of the legislature doesn't change d executive decision. The rep is playing to d gallery to make u guys believe they r on d side of Nigerians on this issue. cos they know they can use this issue to pacify religious bigots while at d same time promote a bill to legitimize stealing and keep d bigots n abject penury. They make u fight a war that's not there, so tht they have what to use to distract u from d stealing and a lot of pple fall for it. The role of d legislature is not to trample on executive decisions, their stand on this issue is not a bill, its just their collective opinion on the issue. Has no effect on d decision of the NERDC. |

linearity: ......and when you relate the section of the constitution you quoted, it tells you that the National Assemblies have powers to give "executive guidelines" and to "make laws that restrict what the executive does"? How do some of you lot process? |

So what happens now? Is this move binding on the ministry of education or those in charge of setting up curriculum? |

veraponpo:I think it is very callous and mischievous of you to lump Boko Haram, All qeada and Al shubab etc with Biafra. Biafra wants to be a sovereign country and is not after shedding blood simple. You know this but decided to vomit your typical propaganda and fear mongering. It cannot stop Biafra from exiting Nigeria peaceful. May God grant peaceful secession to those who desire it and war to those.............in Jesus' name, |

ivolt:With due respect sir, I don't think you made any sense. You can as well ask that English Language and Mathematics be expunged since most English graduates cannot speak correct English grammar and some Mathematics graduates cannot solve simple arithmetic. |

UnchangeableGod: I don't expect you to understand, my post was directed at those who can see beyond their nose. The aim of teaching english has been achieved when the student can understand basic english with mathematics, even the dullest student apply its principles to their daily financial transactions. It is unfortunate that you think mathematics is about solving arithmetic while english is just about correct grammar. |
Re: House Of Representatives Returns CRK As Independent Subject by UnchangeableGod: 8:22pm On Jul 12, 2017 |
ivolt:Sir, for your information, CRK as a subject only makes people knowledgeable about God from the biblical point of view. It does not make anyone a Christian. One's life of sin can only stop as a result of encounter with Christ, the only Saviour. |
Re: House Of Representatives Returns CRK As Independent Subject by UnchangeableGod: 8:28pm On Jul 12, 2017 |
ivolt:Following your logic, the aim of religious studies is to make people knowledgeable about God and His ways which people can choose to research on for knowledge sake. It is not meant to stop sin and corruption, only Christ in man can. So it doesn't need expunging due to increase in societal vices. |
Re: House Of Representatives Returns CRK As Independent Subject by ivolt: 9:13pm On Jul 12, 2017 |
UnchangeableGod: How does the knowledge improve the lives of the students ? Why are religious bodies fighting for what doesn't make one a christian ? What are the functions of sunday schools ? Why waste money on a fruitless subject ? All I see are lazy parents outsourcing their duties to government. Until we concentrate on getting results and discarding sentimental but useless project we will keep going round in a circle. |

Iamzik: I will like to make it clear that I don't have any problem with what the house did neither am I in support or against the change by NERDC, I am mainly concerned about the way it is being presented by the media and whoever is propagating it. you will agree with me that the country is very volatile and we need to be very careful when it comes to matters of the religion knowing fully well that people these days don't go into research to know if what they were told is true or not. CAN and co made the news with it by saying Buhari "the already tagged bigot"'s administration proposed and implemented it under a Muslim northerner as the education minister just as they did my Pastor Adeboye's resignation and the implementation of a law passed by the house and upheld by the court which was being enforced by a Christian. That alone is enough to add more fuel to the already burning fire of hatred between the acclaimed followers of both religion. There is no crime in being truthful that Jonathan started it but they are not okay with it and will appreciate if the current administration can reverse it instead of always playing the victim card. On who to teach,NERDC was clear on this on their website. It states that the subjects will be taken simultaneously at different classes. This is an indication that there will be different teachers for both subjects. |
