I thought of opening the air filter housing and I found out that the air filter is torn and it was sew with wool, I never check the air filter housing ever since I got the car. Could this be the cause?

Oga change ur air filter and first get injector cleaner with you next gas..and make sure you fill the gas to half tank... After doing this, if its still cconsuming.. get a good mechanic to help you clean your injectors manually..then your car will be fine. THANK ME LATER

17 miles for 1k naira is around 27 km to 6.9litre of fuel (1k naira worth of fuel ) which equates to around 4km/litre mpg which is very bad .You car is drinking fuel like fish as your should should be close to 10km per litre.
The effect that your sown air filter will contribute might be minor compared to the other issues your are yet to uncover .
Your need to answer the following question .
Does your fan come on as soon as your start the car ?,is your engine thermostat still intact?
what is the level of your engine vibration(misfire) at idle (no vibration at all ,mild ,intense).
Do you have wires flying around like cobwebs around your engine bay (kazeemisation )
What is the colour of your exhaust at high rev ??
Have your scanned the car before and what are the codes you have .
Your car will need a professional touch !!

Yes fan come on as soon as possible(has been like that since tho), themosthat no, cuz if there is, fan won't start as soon as possible.no vibration, no wire flying around, and it doesn't bring smoke when rev high [Rev very high, quote author=honmusa post=58876097]

Is your check engine light (CEL) on? If yes, a simple scan will lead you to its fault.

Was the 6.9 liters of fuel poured into the car immediately the reserve tank indicator came on the first time? You have to factor in the distance covered on reserve tank before refill to increase your accuracy.
My advice:
* Replace airfilter
* Clean MAF meter/ sensor with contact cleaner
* Service throttle body.
* You might have to reset your throttle body butterfly if it has been adjusted to allow more air in.
The above will only clean out the dirt that has already passed through the filter before now and might improve your gas mileage.
There are other factors that affect fuel consumption.

Plus I noticed the car gets to 120, 140 on odometer easily now without getting to 3000rpm

Funny thread. Nigerians and management. People are aspiring to travel from ogbomosho to ilorin on 500 naira fuel. Op u r very funny o. U never knew air filter was white. Got me laughing. This craze for corolla should just stop. Seriously it's getting annoying. Ur car no longer has thermostat. Fan is connected directly. Air filter was sewn. How do u even hope to get the best from this car. I'm sure the cooling system has pure water in place of coolant. Naija used car is a no no for me unless user is just like me.

so somebody replaced the air filter with a sweater, the ride was choking all along. Poor corolla, it has really suffered lots of abuse from Nigerians. Op sef come dey buy 2liter fuel as if say na bajaj motorcycle, na wah. Pls don't put quarts 5000 in that ride you can get quarts 9000 and change it every 3500 to 4000miles.
